May 11th, 2023 – Surfs up at SeaWorld Orlando! The parks newest roller coaster, Pipeline: The Surf Coaster, is opening this weekend and we got a preview today. Pipeline is the world’s first B&M (Bolliger & Mabillard) Surf roller coaster. Similar to a Stand-Up Coaster, guests ride in a standing position and have flexible restraints to create the illusion of surfing.
Starting with a 60 mph (97 kph) LSM launch, the motion shift rider’s seats up and down to resemble the feeling of surfing. With multiple elements such as over-banked turns and helices to get that gnarly feeling, the highlight is a corkscrew style element, that the park is calling a “wave curl” based the “cork alley oop” surfing trick. With it’s superb theme and awesome sensations, it’s certainly no Junkyard Dog! Pipeline: The Surf Coaster is the seventh operating coaster in SeaWorld Orlando’s line up, and the parks fourth B&M.
Speculation for a new ride type started in 2019 when a patent trademark for “Surf Coaster” was filed by roller coaster manufacturer B&M. SeaWorld started teasing “Project Penguin”, the codename for the coaster, in 2020. Publicity ramped up in 2022, with the park formally announcing it later that year.
