May 14th, 2022 – It’s been 19 years since Chessington World of Adventures opened a brand new roller coaster, but they’ve done it in style! Mandrill Mayhem is one of three rides in the park’s new themed area, The World of Jamanji, based on the popular movie franchise. Mandrill Mayhem is multiple coaster experiences rolled into one – launches, wing seats, bi-directional (because it’s a shuttle coaster) and features the first and only inversion on a roller coaster at Chessington!
In a first of a kind for roller coaster manufacturer B&M, the custom Wing coaster is over 65 feet (20m) tall and reaches up to nearly 45 mph (72.5 km/h) thanks to the LSM launches. Riders start the ride by heading “backwards” out of the station before being launched forwards and catapulted towards an in-line twist. Another burst of speed pushes the train – themed to a mandrill, the largest primate in the world – along spiraling track curled around an impressive 55 feet (16.7m) tall jaguar shrine statue that dominates the area. The train slows to a stop leaving riders hanging to one side, before the trains does it all again but in reverse. The rear seats of the train face backwards to give riders another unique experience. Mandrill Mayhem has a 4 feet (1.2m) minimum height limit so it’s an idea thrill coaster for younger children. Chessington are currently only allowing guests to ride by the new coaster by reserving a ride time on their app – there is no general queue line, although this may change in the future.
The World of Jamanji has two other flat ride attractions, Ostrich Stampede and Mamba Strike. The area has plenty of selfie opportunities as well as mini-obstacle courses to try out.
