Accidents
Theme parks and roller coasters are statistically very, very, very safe. Out of the millions of people who ride the thousands of rides every year, there are only a small handful of incidents. You are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident driving to an amusement park than having one at a park. The rarity of accidents is one reason why the media report them, similar to plane crashes.
Every important element of a ride is inspected on a regular basis and every ride is tested every day without passengers before it opens. A ride might not open, or a safety system might activate, if there is an imperfection. For theme parks to operate, they must obtain insurance and one stipulation is their rides are frequently inspected and signed off by a strict Health & Safety governing body. Every theme park does what they can to prevent accidents because the negative press would be bad for business.

Several people were injured when the car caught fire.
Queensland Amusement Park, Poonamallee, India
An 11-year-old girl died when two boats collided. Staff were arrested for negligence.

Thirteen riders were injured when the train stopped abruptly. Source
Hellraiser, Travelling Funfair, Suffolk, UK
Several cars came loose and crashed into each other. 2 people had to be cut free by firefighters. Several others were injured, including a 24 year old woman who suffered broken ribs and spinal damage.
Indiana Log Ride, Siam Park City, Thailand
One woman was killed and five injured when a faulty water pump failed to cushion the boat’s decent from a drop.
Booster, Fete des Loges, Paris, France
A gondola broke loose from the swinging arm and crashed to the ground. A father and son were killed instantly, while another two people were seriously injured.
Polar Express, Coney Island, NY, USA
A 15-year-old girl was thrown from the circular ride and sustained injuries from rolling down a hill.
Octupus, Six Flags America, USA
A 4-year-old girl fell four foot from the ride when she stood up, sustaining minor injuries.
Python, Eftelin, Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands
Workers narrowly avoided injury as they assist a stalled train that suddenly started to move. (Watch for the quick reactions of the riders!)
