What's new

"Now Showing"

Watched the new version of Journy to the Center of the Earth.

It was ok, lots of action. But the let down was bad effects and the main actor. The film is a no brainer but I prefer the original one.

5/10

Slayed's reviews = win. I haven't seen Milk but I was very tempted, especially after all the good things I heard. I think your review of Watchmen is fair, I totally see what you mean about trying too hard to be clever etc.

I might have a mass cinema trip tomorrow but I don't think I can sit through another Nic Cage movie, hmm.

^I have Knowing, Gran Torino, The Damned United and The Boat That Rocked to catch up with this week :p. Love it!

More good stuff coming soon too - Coraline, Wolverine, Terminator Salvation, Star Trek, In The Loop, Monsters v Aliens...

^I thought the boat that rocked was out next week? My parents saw Gran Torino the other week, they both said they were impressed which I think is a first, must be good.

Just watched Mission Impossible on DVD.

It's the first time I've seen it the whole way through. It's an ok film, enjoyable at times. Thing that really grinds my gears is the fact that it's a TGV that goes from London to Paris, not the Eurostar. Did I miss something or were the film makers just fools and decided that TGV gave them more moneys or something so instead of using the correct train they replaced it with an advert? If that is the case it's worse than Sony's product placements in Bond 20 and 21.

Rating: 3/5 (lowered by one down to the train mess up)

A very interesting film, if a bit slow but it works and creates and gripping storyline. Very well shot. Especially in the 2 intense scenes it has. It really is one to see on the big screen and I really do like it.

It sort-of touches on the idea of creation. It does make you think of the world you live in more.

Yeah, that one scene, with the plane was absolutely nuts to watch on the big screen, I thought! It really made me not want to fly ever again, haha.

And yeah there were definitely a lot of discussions and debates with me, my friends, and family after watching that movie!

Just returned from Knowing. Well. I'm going to rate this film in 2 halves. The first hour and the second hour.
I felt the first hour was good, suspenseful and to a point somewhat believable. The plane and subway crashes really were spectacular, and some of the best stuff filmed in the disaster genre for a while. Nic Cage wasn't bad during this hour either.
8/10

The second hour on the other hand was mind numbingly AWFUL. As soon as it became apparent that this was a sort of supernatural or religious thing, it just decended in to a farce. My friends and I were threatened with being thrown out of the cinema at one point due to us laughing at how bad it was. Nic Cage also decended into a farce, as well as the rest of the cast. The only good part was that the destruction of New York does rival that of Watchmen.
2/10

Overall I'd give the film a 4/10, due to the farcical second half. I'm not going to be watching this again in a hurry. If you do want to watch it, wait until september online when it'll be a fiver on DVD. Otherwise you're wasting your money.

There is more stuff wrong with that scene then just that: http://www.slipups.com/items/1322.html

I got Men in Black and Casino Royale on Blu Ray (2 for £25)

Men in Black - a good mix of fantasy and humour, I really do wish that Wil Smith would stick to this style, rather than trying to be serious. Tommy Lee Jones provides the perfect partner. The special effects are a bit dated now, yet still effective. Picture quality is fine, although I am comparing it against the Superbit version I have. Unusually Sony have gone with the Anamorphic 16:9 version which may be why the colours are just not quite on the money. That said, they have dropped the DTS soundtrack and simply stuck with the Dolby HD one. Special features are fine, with a couple of games and some commentaries. It seems to me that MIB has been chucked together rather than produced as a Blu Ray.

7/10

Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. (Blu Ray)

Okay, I again got caught up in the hype of a big display of dvd's and decided to buy Solace to see what Bond was like now. I have never been a massive fan of Bond, prefering Jack Ryan and Jason Bourne instead. Watching these two, reminded me why the others have the edge. James Bond films simply seem to chuck together special effects, car and people chases and mix them with soft porn in the hope that they work. Bond should have died at least half a dozen times in each film yet, still manages to miraculously recover in time to beat the villain - I think that was fine when I was 12 but not now.

Picture and sound are good, content is disappointing.

Yeah, I didn't like the fact that a good movie had to rely on supernatural stuff. It really just seems that people who make films these days have to rely on either a really out there, unrealistic ending, or special effects to make a movie. Although I liked the movie, it could've been much better if they didn't have such a far fetched ending, and everyone just died.

Though the New York scene still is amazing.

^Lets all celebrate the great use of spoiler tags

Last night I watched Porkys on Film4.

Haha, it was so funny, had a good story and some brilliant scenes. The gym teachers made me lol so much, lassie ftw :p

Rating: 4/5

Went cinema today, first film I saw was Knowing.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I thought it was going to be terrible seeing as Nic Cage was in the lead role. He wasn't that bad  . I think the story was good and unlike Taylor and John 91 I thought the ending was decent and for a low budget film was pulled off really well (unlike the similar ending in Indy 4, wtf was that?). The score was fantastic, so epic and so effective. I thought it was really well directed and I was really disturbed by the disaster scenes and was nearly making a brown patch in my underwear during some scenes. Just a great film. Shame that some effects looked badly finished but it didn't seem to effect the movie that much.

Rating: 4.5/5

Second film I saw was Monsters Vs. Aliens 3D.

Why did I go and see it? I dunno, from things I heard a couple months back I thought Dreamworks might have made a decent film. Oh how wrong was I? It was just abysmal. It's a kids film trying to appeal to both kids and adults (like a Pixar film) and it just fails on all levels. It wasn't funny to the kids in the audience apart from about 2 lines of dialogue (whoop-de-do) and I think the other adults in the audience were like me and just like "that was a waste of time and moneys". Each 'joke' just missed the spot and was badly timed. The only good things I can say about this film is that the president was amusing (I used to play that tune on the keyboard too :p) the huge bug thing was cute (but under-used), Hugh Laurie's evil laugh and who ever did the voice acting for the alien was awesome. Apart from that it was dire. Avoid if possible.

Rating: 1/5

EDIT: Ben, totally on the spot about QoS, and I'm a big Bond fan.

^ Eh, I'm too lazy to put spoiler tags, and it's not like people come in here not realizing there is a possibility of seeing a spoiler anyways. I've had movies ruined for me in this very place, so I guess I'm just getting back now :p .

I didn't think any of the effects were too badly finished though, so I disagree with you there. As for the M Vs. A review, I heard it's cute, but maybe not for this particular age group, haha.

^thanks for ruining the ending Taylor. I wanted to see that film but am not sure now.

Anyway just been browsing the trailers on my iPod and came across this which looked pretty good. Seems to have lots of jumpy moments but if the ending is what I think it is guessing from the trailer then they will have to pull it off well to make it work.

^ I heard that is suppose to be pretty good as well..

And, you should still see Knowing, I didn't completely ruin it; I even knew what happened because my boyfriend told me, but I still thought it was good. It's not like I did a step by step runthrough of it all.

I saw lesbian vampire killers! It was acctualy quite good. Still pretty childish due to the fact that the jokes were all about sex. But I am pleased there was no toilet humor in it, or so I noticed! Oh yeah and the grindhouse-ish style rules! Shame they didnt put a grain filter on it!!!
Overall I would give it 8/10

Pinocchio 70th Anniversary Edition, Blu ray

Firstly, I have to say that I was shocked by how old Pinocchio actually is. Therefore I wasn't expecting too much from this one, although I have never bought this in other formats, so thought it about time to do so.

I was blown away by the picture quality which shows what can be done in the restoration department. Colours are vibrant and the animation is of a quality that todays animations simply can't compete with. Sound, is another matter. Recorded 70 years ago, and it shows. Hisses and pops are eliminated but the rudimentary recording techniques of the day remain. That said, it doesn't detract from the fantastic story.

The Special Features are pretty immersive too giving masses of information on production.

In summary, a first class restoration of a really old movie. I have read critisism about it being in 4:3 format which I find ridiculous. I doubt any of Disneys offerings of the past 30 years even come close to this timeless masterpiece.

9/10

Saw Lesbian Vampire Killers yesterday...was dire...don't get me wrong I wasn't expecting anything great but was hoping for a bit more lesbo action....I was very disappointed....no **** material for me now!!
