This isn't a good argument to be in Ciall, as the American spelling is actually the correct, original English one. The English have been using tyre for less than 100 years.
So it's not the Americans who have changed it in this case, but us (much like faucet, the American is and old English word meaning the release at the end of a pipe, a tap is a direct access to liquid - the two are very distinct things).
So yeah, give up while you're behind
