"Now Showing"

The Forbidden Kingdom

Watched about half of this before falling asleep out of boredom. I thought a film with jackie chan and jet lee in it would've been OOOOH so much better!

Plot pretty much follows the same ancient story as the old classic "Monkey" (if you were around in the early 80's you'd know).. But has Jackie Chan and some american kid trying to rescue the "Monkey" Man from being turned to stone.

Sounds better than it is.

Gonna try watching the rest of it now.. Will let you know if it improves.

so far: 5/10 (got higher score for having jackie chan in it!)

EDIT: For those of you too young to remember:

Just finished watching it.

It improved ONLY because of the INCREDIBLY orchestrated fight sequences.

All beautifully done as some intricate kung fu ballet.

The Jackie Chan/Jet Li fight alone was stunning to watch. And the end battle beautiful. I especially liked the witch.

So to summarise:

**** plot, **** acting, **** story.. F-ing brilliant fight sequences!

Would make an ACE videogame!

8/10 for pure entertainment & loveley cinematography - Just dont expect it to be the best movie in the world like "ShowGirls" or anything.

Next up on my fun evening of sitting alone at home - is "Alien Vs Predator - Requiem"

I *knew* this film would suck balls.. But someone I worked with insisted it was actually good. (Last time i listen to him!)

Absolute turd of a movie. Worst film i've seen since "the core" and "blair witch"

It could've saved itself by having some breasts on display or something.. But .. Nothing..

0/10 - Absolute turd.

Next up on my list of turds to watch : Indiana Jones!

^Lol, the first AvP was bad enough, why subject yourself to another one!

Today I went to see City of Ember. Its an ok film, good setup for a film storyline but it just doesn't excite, it fails at any point where it could succeed. Its another film from the peeps at Walden media (Nim's Island, LOTR), I keep getting bitterly disappointed by this company and I really don't know why I keep paying to watch their films. Meh.
Watched it yesterday, it's a mess. Either it was butchered or badly written (or both). Has big overtones of Lemony Snickett as well by the end (and Bioshock weirdly enough XD). Some nice camerawork but that's about it really, I might hunt out the book to see what it should have been like. 3/10

By now though Peep you should just accept that you're wrong about LOTR :p.

I saw How to Lose Friends and Alienate People on Wednesday. I love Simon Pegg but his last few films have been a bit of a let down since Shawn of the Dead. This however gave me some hope again, was really funny, especially the whole 'Americans don't get British humour' theme running through it all the way. The message wasn't too heavy either, which was refreshing. Kirsten Dunst was an interesting choice for her role, she pulls it off exceptionally I just wonder why she chose to star in it though. Oh well, was good anyway.

I also saw Taken on Friday. I was reluctant to see this because, as much as I like thrillers I never have an urge to watch them. This one was good, had a decent story line that was quite plausible yet they still manage to go ott with the unrealistic fighting and stuff. Kind of ruined it but other than that it was a really good watch.

Just watching "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull"

South park was right..

1/10 DAMN YOU LUCAS!!!!!

I also just saw Taken
Liam Neeson was brilliant as always and there was a great storyline and not just blah blah shoot bad guys from the word go.
I saw Brokeback Mountain the other day, reluctantly I have to say, but once I got into it, it was a beautiful story. I cried like a baby. Though the first sex scene was a little unexpected, I don't mean the content, I mean how it happened.

I just watched for a second time (not that I clearly remember the first) 'Psycho' the 1998 remake starring Vince Vaughn and Vigo Mortonsen.

I do kind of admire Gus Van Sant for being brave enough to attempt the remake of such a classical horror, however it doesn't live up to it's potential (as a classic thriller).
The action of the film kicks in too early, there's not enough time for the audience to digest the storyline properly. On the contrary though, I think the dialouge is pretty good, Vince Vaughn plays Norman Bates very well, quite a creepy, sarcastic character.

I like the whole Phoenix, Arizona setting too, it's a perfect location for this type of film, however I don't think the film stunned me at all.

That was a really good movie, and I love how it kind of broke away from the traditional love stories. It was very different, I have to give it that, and the story was, as you put it, beautiful.

Ewww, they made a remake of that? Didn't even know that.

I started watching Iron Man last night... But, I fell asleep fifteen minutes after it started, so I'll have to make another attempt.

^We were gonna see that today, but it didn't look that good.

Anyway just now, I saw Donnie Darko with some friends.

Well, it's probably the film with the most confusing ending I've seen, even after looking it up/thinking about it. I sorta get it, but somebody tell me if this is right..

SPOILER...
The jet engine travels back in time from 30th Oct and crashes into the house of the Darko's. Donnie then goes through October until 30th October where he sees a time port thing and sends the jet engine back to October 2nd.
The time is reset back to Oct 2nd. Before the plane crashes into the house (again, I suppose), he stays in his room, (knowing that Gretchen can't die?, like she did during the first time between Oct 2nd and Oct 30th).

Anyway, I still thought it was a great movie, and if that is how the story goes, then it's really original and awesome. Some of the scenes were fantastic, and I wasn't really bored at all. Kept me entertained throughout. But er, I was surprised to see Ashley Tisdale randomly hehe.

8½/10 for now. I'll probably see it again though at some point just to clarify the ending etc..

Slayed, what do you mean I'm wrong about LOTR? Its a bunch of dog turd thats been on the bottom of a broken shoe for so long it won't come off anymore, thats my opinion and it'll never change. :D

Anyways, yesterday I watched Parenthood. I love this film, so amusing, I think its Steve Martin at his best. I also love the granny when she is playing with helium at the birthday party, classic. Its a film everyone should at least watch once.
Rating: 4/5

Earlier this evening I watched La vie en rose. I've had it on DVD for ages but never got round to watching it. Its a really good film, very depressing though. She had such a crappy life but she had a great voice. Its something I'll have to re-watch.
Rating: 4/5

So what's going on in the US? Body of Lies, a Leo DiCaprio/Russell Crowe film, gets beaten to third place by Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and City of Ember is completely ignored (doesn't even make the top 10!).

Has the marketing turned to rubbish? Or are people desperately looking for comedies and films that require no brain function during the financial crisis?

To be fair, I'm sure Beverly Hills Chihuahua did well because parents bring their kids to see it, and I'm sure there were a lot of family outings since it's a movie anyone can enjoy (well, it can't be that enjoyable considering it's rating, but whatever).

Kid's movies always tend to do really well, so I'm not surprised.

I've been watching series 1 of Carnivale over the last few weeks on DVD.

Before TiVo, I found it hard to keep up with these series, even though I wanted to watch them - so I'm playing catch up now (I know they canceled after series two :( ).

I don't know if anyone else watched it, but it's a superb program. The episodes are slow though, and the back story is very drawn out. I love it's grittiness and realism though (as real as you can get for a fantasy story anyway). It doesn't pull any punches and it's quite disturbing and horrible at times.

Really good to watch, just as a kind of adult soap opera with fantastical overtones.

I finally saw Iron Man the other night as my roommate had bought it on DVD.

I'd heard it was good, but didn't think it'd keep my attention as much as it did. The plot was pretty good, although a little predictable here and there, and I thought the acting was rather well done. All in all it probably shoots up to the nearly 10 category, with a 9.5/10

Eagle Eye

I have mixed feelings about this one, because it started off really easy to follow but then near the end it kinda went a bit downhill. Like, the action was almost non-stop so that made it exciting despite not being an action film fan, but the actual storyline just seemed complicated at the end of it all.

Keeps you wondering though, but it's sort of repetitive and I dunno.. Like I said, mixed feelings.
