What's new

"Now Showing"

Yesterday evening, I saw a special screening of Taken.

We'd seen the trailer a couple of times when going to the cinema before, and well, it looked pretty average or below. But my god, were we surprised..

It was fantastic!

The plot was great, very unique, and the action scenes were just superb. From the trailers it looked more thriller-based than action-based, but it wasn't, and I think that's what made it so good. Liam Neeson was great in it, but Maggie Grace's character was 17, when she clearly looked older than that, so it wasn't the best age to give the character.

9/10.

It's out in the U.K. on Fri 26th Sept, but not in the U.S.A until January, surprisingly. So yeah, go see it, you'll be very surprised!

OMG OLLIE HAPPY BIRTHDAY I SO DIDN'T SAY IT TO YOU I AM SUCH A BAD FRIEND!

Anyway, I agree with whoever said Hairspray isn't a very good musical. I haven't seen the new one yet, but I have the old one and expect that the new one is the same, just with crappier characters like Zac Efron.

It was a film spread over 10 episodes. The full film is on DVD. :p
At least that's what the TV guide said lol.

I watched the goonies earlier.

Fuxing AWESOME <3

Yes, it is! Well done :)

I've watched Near Dark - Late 80's vampire flick. It was much better in the late 80's  It's not bad I guess, but it was much better 20 years ago when I was 16 :)

Worth a watch if you're into vampire road movies. 3/5

Then I watched The Elephant Man. Another film I've not seen for 20 years. Hasn't aged, is still an utterly fantastic film, just so emotional and brilliant. Top stuff! 5/5!

Elephant Man is probably the saddest movie ever; probably even sadder than the Green Mile. I can't believe it actually happened, and I also can't believe how cruel people can be. The end is so sad..

It's definitely one of my favourite movies.

Kim, Goonies kinda sucks.

I recorded American Beauty on BBC the other day, and watched it the day after.

Wow. While it's a difficult film to classify (Wiki has it down as a drama... about as vague as it gets), it made a whole lot of sense on the meta level, a bit like Donnie Darko. It was thoroughly enjoyable. Kevin Spacey is brilliant throughout, and I liked Chris Cooper as the bigoted colonel, and Wes Bentley as his slightly odd camcorder obsessed son.

I think Mark described it as a very good deconstruction of the American dream, and I tend to agree.

It's sweet, funny and ultimately poignant in its final message, and Newman's score is fantastically airy and sad at the same time. It's not a sad film though, about realising what you have and what it's worth ect ect.

8.5/10, and would happily watch again.

88 Minutes

I thought this would just be like, one of those super confusing action movie with seven thousand and two plots, and eighty zillion characters, but it was probably my favourite action movie I've seen so far, because it was also a psychological thriller. Good plot, Al Pacino was in it, and some exciting scenes.

Worth the rental, for sure.

Doomsday:
I had no idea what to expect from this film and only had a vague idea of the storyline.
All I can say is...
Wow! :)
The way this film is done was brilliant. It had lots of gore, violence and mass panic scenes (which I like in films if they're done well).
It's not your typical horror movie and attempts to be different, which it succeeds in. It does get a bit confusing in the castle scenes and you kind of forget that they're in future Britain.
The fight scenes are done well and they portray the image of a new Scotland really well, with no rules and no government things are crazy with survival of the fittest. People get ripped limb from limb, get decapitated and burned alive, and it's all shot really well.
Recommend this film to everyone (unless you don't like gore and good movies). :p

Jumper:
This was my first ever film rental from the iTunes store so I decided at 2:30 this morning to watch it.
It was good. Short and sweet, and I liked the idea of Jumping around. The camera work and special effects were pretty good and the pacing kept the film going so that you didn't get bored or distracted.
I thought the whole idea of the Jumpers getting hunted by the Paladins was a little cheesy though. The acting was ok but you didn't feel for them at all. The climax was pretty weak and the ending left alot of questions unanswered and just left the story hanging.

It's worth watching as some evening entertainment, but I'd rent it and not buy it otherwise you may think your not getting your moneys worth.

Major League

Ahh.. the harrowing tale of my favorite baseball team.. the Cleveland Indians. Of course, I have seen it numerous times.. but this would be my first rating.

<3

The best part about the whole movie is that, before this movie.. they were horrific.. then the year after and for about a decade after, they were one of the best teams in all of baseball.

MAKE ANOTHER MOVIE!! :p

^ For the most part, I really don't like films that have to do with sports because they all like, follow the same format:

Introduction
Team plays a game
Team loses the game
Team is very upset about this
A big game is coming up
Everyone is cheering for them to win
After the game starts, they start off bad
Team makes a big comeback
Team wins the game
Everybody celebrates

Now, I'm not saying Major League is like this, but mostly all of the sport movies I have seen follow that format.

Yesterday I went to see Tropic Thunder. I've been looking forward to this film since the first trailer was released on the net. Unfortunately I think one of the viral videos they made was actually funnier than the majority of the film (though it was a classic video and tbh nothing that has been released this year has made me laugh more than that one video). Jack Black surprisingly shone in this film, was really funny and probably his best performance to date. Downey Jr was great too, no doubt about that. Tom Cruise was well-overrated although it was nice to see him playing a dick rather than trying to be cool and looking like a dick in the process. It was a good film and I'm glad there are some hilarious moments which were left out of the marketing for the film, made it better.

Rating: 4/5

The Eye:
Wasn't really bothered if I watched this or not. So I did. :p
It was alright. It relied on just trying to make you jump rather than anything psychological and most of the time it was really predictable when things were going to happen. It's quite a short film, but the way they drag things out makes it feel longer. Jessica Alba put up a pretty good performance and really makes you think about what it would be like in her situation. To have the ability to see again since she lost her sight in an accident when she was five.
The last scene was quite good (where they were on the highway on the American border). But it really needed a strong film beforehand to make it have it's full effect so it felt like it was lacking.

Overall it's just another failed attempt at an American remake of a Japanese horror film. I wouldn't recommend buying it as you may be disappointed, but if you see it cheap somewhere then you probably won't mind as much.

Harold and Kumar go to White Castle

I watched the second one before I watched this one, but I was determined to see this one after how funny the second one turned out. This pretty much lived up to my expectations; I knew it would be really similar to Escape from Guantanamo Bay, but it had a lot of funny parts and really stupid parts as well. Kumar is awesome though, haha.
