Music Recommendations

I noticed Slayed made note of Biffy Clyro's Only Revolutions, and this made me happy, as I too love the album. I got it 3 days early too (HMV pre-orders <3)!

For once in an album there isn't a song I don't like. I could easily listen to any of the songs on there over and over. As Slayed said, Bubbles is epic, the Josh Homme during the outro is subtle but noticable enough to make it great. Cloud of Stink is one crazy song, changing tempo's throughout and being properly heavy and upbeat. I am also loving Know Your Quarry, it's such a great listen, makes me really happy.

I could mention all of the songs, but biology coursework awaits :(. I wouldn't go as far to say it's classic Biffy, but it's definately Biffy. Far better than Puzzle, I would put it as my second favourite album by them, behind Infinity Land. My only problem with the album is that it's on the short side, at about 42 minutes I think. But it's definately worth a listen by anyone.

In other news, Them Crooked Vultures is streaming on youtube. I can't properly say much on it yet, but at first listens it sounds like it could have been a lot better, but still pretty good.

I am in LOVE with The Captain video. It is fantastic, as is the song, can't wait to actually get my hands on the whole album.

Finally gotten hold of Only Revolutions.
I agree with Funky Monk in that it's not "classic Biffy", but it's accessable for anyone to listen to, without the popiness of some of the Puzzle songs.

Don't see the point of sticking Mountains on there, though.

Time to manly up this limp-wristed topic up with a bit of drums, guitars and male vocals!

Them Crooked Vultures is Grohl from the Foos, John Paul Jones from Led Zep and Josh Homme from Queens of The Stone Age.

As it's not prancy pop sang by a freak in front of a clean, layered electronic soundtrack, I doubt anybody here will appreciate the raw drums, guitar and vocals that blend splendidly together to form such a natural tension and excitement. It rocks!

Loves it more than life!

OMG.

It's such a shame it's only 8 songs, cause all 8 of them kick ass I just want MORE.

GAGA.

I'm so booking to see her now this album kicks toosh.

I've got the new Biffy album myself too, but I have to say i've not been compelled to listen to it loads yet. I've had two or three listens through, and it sounds good, but there's a poppy edge i'm not convinced about. The Captain is a song I genuinely don't like, its too poppy and bouncy for my liking, its just not them, whereas That Golden Rule was much more like what you'd expect from them, even if it was 'Living's A Problem...' in reverse... So far, i'd still rank Puzzle ahead of it (but that's open to change with more listens), because Puzzle, whilst still much more commercial than earlier stuff (inevitably), it still had an epic, truly emotive edge to it, which i've not yet unearthed in Only Revolutions. Best album's still between Infinity Land & Blackened Sky though.

On the subject of new music, and marginally disappointing new music at that too, I downloaded the new Editors album a couple of weeks back, on the back of hearing the first single Papillon, and they've gone all boring and synthy, how rubbish. Papillon is excellent, its got the usual dark heart of an Editors song, but taking it in a newer (or older, with the 80s synths) direction, and the title track In This Light & Of This Evening is also excellent, if very different, and horrendously dark, before breaking down into some brilliant guitar & massive drums near the end (used in the first episode of the new Top Gear series). Songs like Bricks & Mortar, which was much hyped before the album release, are just a bit ploddy and electronic-ish indie with nothing of note though, which from a band I would've classed as one of my favourites after the last album, was rather disappointing.

One of the good ones - the 'video' seems to be a bit tempramental though.

Oh and Ian, Them Crooked Vultures are mega yeah!

Just found out about Mumford and Sons.

They've got a couple of really good songs on their album, and the rest aren't bad.

Here's one of the better of the best:

Cousins, the first single from their second album Contra, due out next year.
Plus, it's a Hammer & Tongs video, so all is well.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Mumford & Sons. They've got the name, look and promise of a band that are going to be far too jangly and folky for my liking, but they're not. They're genuinely catchy, and while i've sort of ignored them due to expecting them to sound like that, i've folded recently and listened and been impressed!

Here's one from what I think is an under-rated band, they are ****ing brilliant!

Here is a more upbeat song from C&C, it has a distinctive classical rock style, I definately recommend this to fans of bands such as Iron maiden and Metallica.

I'll leave my personal favourite from this album as well, you need to give it a minute to really kick in, but it is very re-playable :)

Hospice - The Antlers

this may as well be album of the year, it's a story about a man who loses a loved one to bone cancer while sitting next to her in the cancer ward. It is the only album that has ever made me cry, it is beautifully made, and all the songs work together. If you are going to download this listen to the entire album not just select songs, for the best effect you must listen form beginning to end, through headphones, in one sitting.

I can never really decide about C&C... I've been trying to get into them for years, but just can't. Some of their songs are really good, but others just dirgy and dull. Very hit and miss... May give them another solid try. I found them at the same tame as Queen Adrena who I also struggle to love (though 'Pretty Like Drugs' is good).

Decided I'm going to join the bandwagon and get the "Them Crooked Vultures" album. See if people are right and they are the next greatest thing. Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and Jimmy Paige must be able to knock up a couple of decent tracks between the three of them ;)

Madame_Furie also likes the Biffy Clyro I played for her last night, so that will be on her Christmas list (along with the new Pearl Jam album).

Also getting into "The Dead Weather" at the moment. It's Jack White's (White Stripes) latest sub-project. He was supposed to just be drumming, but he's making his way forwards more and more. They have the "all sounds the same" issue, but it's a different sound - something interesting.
