Legoland Denmark | Polar X-plorer | Zierer with drop section

The Zierer model is cheaper because it's simpler.

It takes a lot less mechanically to freefall drop a track section on to some magnetic brakes and then winch it back up than it does to have the track moved by two large, mechanical pylons which must be individually calibrated and controlled.

The only real disadvantage I see here is that under this system, you can't really have any of the pre-drop track "tilting" that 13 had - since the drop track is all on one rig, it's basically only be capable of dropping down, straight and level (though a rocking would be possible through the use of pivot joints, I just don't see any from the pics shown).

I personally think this system makes more sense. What you gain through (perceivably) simplicity more than makes up for the small amount of "capability" you're giving up.

Th13teen doesn't tilt. It has a pre-drop, then the main drop.

^^ I think that's a broken link.

I can assure you that Th13teen does not tilt.

It may have done on the day UC rode it? I've had different "pre-drop" experiences on Thirteen because the complicated mechanism seems very prone to issues. Which is kind of the point being made ;)

If it tilts or not, you can't do a pre-drop with a Zierer but you can on an Intamin which is essentially UCs argument.

Re: New Coaster for Legoland Denmark

Considering that it's just one hydraulic cylinder, I don't think you could get much tilting.

Re: New Coaster for Legoland Denmark

^Thirteen is two hydraulic cylinders, meaning it CAN tilt forwards and backwards. Watch the video (I fixed the link).

Re: New Coaster for Legoland Denmark

It has one. The animation is wrong.

"This one cylinder here, does all of the work."

Re: New Coaster for Legoland Denmark

I stand corrected. I'd never bothered watching that video all the way though. The more you know, eh? :p

This still doesn't stop UC's point being right though. The mechanism on Thirteen would allow tilting of the track, whereas the system on this new coaster at Legoland wouldn't. Knowing how many technical faults they get with 13 (I can't see why it would be anything other than the drop mechanism causing the problem too), the simpler the better with this sort of thing.

I never disagreed with his point, I was just pointing out that Th13teen doesn't tilt! :p

Th13teen hasn't had any problems with the Drop Zone for a while now. If it goes down, it's usually for an overspeed.

Re: New Coaster for Legoland Denmark

To be honest, it's a nice little coaster. It does SO much more then Th13teen too. We got spited.

Is that outward banked turn?

EDIT: It's probaby a normally banked trun upside down.

I dont think it looks no better really.

The begining looks 'ok', but after the drop, it practically ends.

Skip to 9:33, talking about the new coaster.

Nothing that we already don't know, but just shows the mechanism working.

Zierer seem to be stepping up in the industry, quite nicely.

Re: Legoland Denmark | Polar X-plorer | Zierer with drop sec

I'm actually pretty excited to see how this all comes together. I haven't really been following it much but I am interested in seeing how encompassing the theming is.

Re: Legoland Denmark | Polar X-plorer | Zierer with drop sec

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it really is a great little addition to the park. When Verbolten was announced, and this, I thought, "Zierer. Really?!", but, now, I really like the new additions that they're putting into parks, whilst they might not be totally amazing additions, they're great for families.

Those trains look amazing, nice and open. The fake mountain looks awesome but the steel building, well, lets hope they get round to theming it.

Still, looks great.
