Legend.

hendrix , page and slash are my top three
but id have to go with hendrix

That totally depends on what you mean by "best"

Angus Young is the personification of Rock & Roll. He has the ability to make a peice of wood with 6 strings sound like something that could level moutain ranges. Electricity just seems to pulse through his fingers. He is also a fantastic performer.

Slash is once again, iconic. Although he has written some classic Rock riffs, his style has a lot more feel. He makes the guitar sing and can convey emotions through it. Listen to songs like November Rain.

Jimmy Page is more of a blues player and once again his use of melody is so much better than his use of rock riffs like on Immigrant Song. When he plays songs like "Since I've Been Lovin' You" and "Stairway To Heaven" you feel the hair on your arms stand up.

Hendrix is one of those artists that will live on forever. He used the guitar as an extension of his body and became one with it. Setting his guitar on fire was amazing because he made it burn and represented his passion.

I am going to go with Hendrix.

If only Peter Green from the one of the original band line ups of Fleetwood Mac didn't go on drugs early on he may have been better than Clapton and Hendrix so although that never happened I still think he would have knocked everyone's socks off, and their shoes :p
But since it never happened for him due to the drugs, I'd probably have to say other, meaning Joe Perry, some of his solo ish stuff (solo as in he wrote and played/sang his own songs for a year or two but i couldnt imagine him performing them without a backing band) sounded great.
Dire Strait legend Mark Knopfler is great too.
At the end of the day currently i think Mark Tremonti's great on guitar and he taught himself to play.

Have a wild stab in the dark...

The reason I think him is because he does what Dan says, he personifies the guitar. He makes it convey emotions, he uses his knowledge and understanding of the instrument, not to just shred or look good but to make a melodic and well timed solo. His unrivaling ability to do this is adept to the way he plays. He doesn't show off like some guitarists but his presence is there un wavering. Personally he is the epitome of guitar playing to me. I've been playing for 5 years now, and that guy is the person I idolise and would like to be like with my guitar playing. However as a person, he may be nice, but the amount of drugs he did **** ME! He drank a gallon of vodka before going on stage. Thats just stupid. But all that aside, an amazing guitarist.

How the ****! Has Brian May of ****ing QUEEN no less NOT made it onto that list?!?!

It's a ****ing farce I tell you! ;)

Because he's a clog wearing menace with a poodle perm that he share's with his missus! He's still no where near as good as the guys i've mentioned and to that list i'd like to add buckethead! So :p

I just picked a random list of guitarists. I'll fix it for you. Just don't blame the Germans. :p

EDIT: Check the first post now Neal. Satisfied?

Brian May is bland, predictable and relatively untalented - plus all the nice things fretboardpyro says :)

I love Jack White, superb blues/rock guitarist - possibly on a par with Jimmy Page - I'd go with either of those though, simply because they're superb and play the kind of music I enjoy :)

Anyway, Where's Nuno???

Guthrie Govan! All the guitarists on the poll have great style and music, but with the exception of Hendrix, none of them could be considered the best guitarist. A poll could never cover the amount of names you'd have to list. Anyway, I suggest you all google Guthrie Govan for educational purposes. :)

Edit: I'll save you the effort, some blues/rock for you:

I dunno? I've heard that "Other" guy is pretty good :p

Meh! Guthrie's ok but his name is Guthrie and he looks like he should be selling copy's of the big issue outsde of somerfield!

I am however a john petrucci fan boy given i own two of his signature guitars.

I'm also a huge fan of ed van halen. In the same way that les paul changed the design of the guitar so indeed did EVH, not only that but he changed the way the guitar was played.
