I really think you should see someone about your deep hatred of cheese graters to be honest, you seem to have issues.

When Wren was rebuilding pretty much all of London, there were people like TP Rich saying his efforts were "ugly", "disgusting" and "ruining the beautiful skyline of thatched houses and the occasional palace" - these days they rot together in peasant hell.

St Paul's (one of the buildings TP Rich (rightly) adores) sparked a lot of controversy when it was first built, now look at the general consensus ;) .

Have you seen the original Wren designs for the London rebuild? It's fantastic, really really awesome. I know it's not the norm to do research and stuff before posting, but it's well worth looking at. And yes, it was deemed too advanced and "modern" so was put to one side.

Well, I spent the evening in Liverpool on Wednesday and the place is pretty nasty to be honest. Well, I love the city, but not it's mostly hideous 60's concrete monstrosities.

Though there are utterly gorgeous buildings like the Museum:

It's not as nice as the Natural History museum in London, but it IS fab.

However, it can't be seen on the skyline, instead that's dominated by the foul concrete lollipop:

Now, this is a strange one. It's exceptionally ugly (mainly due to the concreteness of it), but it IS an important piece of the landscape. Liverpool wouldn't be the same without it (though if it went, the horrid St. John's centre might also go ;) ). They can take Liverpool Hospital with them too if they're at it. Sometimes a blight is a needed blight because it's become part of the landscape. Anyway, I'm just bitter because I was once promised a meal in the restaurant that used to be in the rotating tower, but when we arrived the lift was closed for maintenance and the restaurant shut. Next time I went to Liverpool it was all shut down.

Liverpool is a great place, but I agree with Furie the balance between attractive and ugly skyline is a fine line, that tower is hideous on the landscape, as well as those flats facing the Irish Sea.

Just hideous...

One place which hasn't been mentioned is Leeds, I remember the FL/LWV Live last year and was the first time I went past/through/in Leeds and thought it looked quite impressive heading towards it, and felt charmed by it.

London has a greater line up due to it's size and importance. It's skyline has been much of advertising, publicity and attention where it's the capital city. The average joe on the street could name more buildings in London then Liverpool and probably say "Liverpool? The Beatles came from there" or "that's where Anfield is" because that's what is most remembered from there.

I remember going up the Monument (Great Fire) with Ben and you get a better appreciation of the skyline from there then the London Eye.

Looks like the Liverpool waters was approved today, this could mean that in the future we could see the tallest building outside of London and loads of tall buildings. I think this will be a great move for the city.

That Hong Kong picture is **** stunning. Thing is, for pictures sake, top down is always epic. But I'd love to just be in the middle of it all surrounded by those buildings looking up and around and people watch. Having said that, the bottom end of the pictures just looks like some **** council estate housing blocks.

That panorama is incredible too, managed to pick out the roof of the Emirates too. And Wembley now. Now being a nerd and trying to find other thing.

The detail in that Hong Kon one is fantastic, you can even see the little Chinese people sitting eating sweet and sour chicken balls and chop suey out of plastic containers. Pity it's such a hideous monstrosity of modern buildings, but I guess if you don't have the British involved building classical buildings over the last hundred years then it would look a modern mess ;)

I know Im bringing this back from the dead, but just look at my signature, how amaing does Liverpool look on that picture.

I don't hate them. I don't feel anything towards them at all. I just like getting on peoples nerves.

^^ Most of the current building on the Liverpool skyline are under 15 years old, with some buildings being just a few months old, so I would class that as a moden skyline.
