Thorpe Park | Derren Brown's Ghost Train | VR Attraction

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

I agree with the "its looking too scary" comment a post or two back.

Not about it looking too scary for me, but about making it looking as such being a potentially poor choice.

Attraction types which could have physically entertained a wider audience than their creative design allows, be that dumbing down or intensifying, is something of a personal pet peeve. Of course there will be examples where it is appropriate to do that, but if you're going to pick an inclusive attraction style, to me it seems silly to then immediately close the doors in the face of those people? It's a bit like what I was saying re: Cheetah Hunt at Tampa - why get a coaster with a high height restriction that looks big and fast, and make it tame claiming it was aimed at families? Why? It's all very well to say well its like Air its aimed at people who are a bit timid, but unlike Air, Cheetah Hunt doesn't look inviting to them.

I don't know if they're pulling a bit of a Thirteen here and that this won't be the extreme experience we're being led to believe. History tells us that there is no learning from mistakes going on and I fully expect a marketing campaign alike Thirteen's... If the ride at the end of that isn't extreme enough, they have a problem.

...I'm starting to get a bit more excited. What little we've seen looks very good, but its the scepticism from history keeping me negative. And even if it is really good, it's yet another grungy, derelict, "unpleasant" environment with a scary theme. Another one. We've been through why before - they're cheaper to create and mean we get decently themed environments as opposed to sparce ones where all the budget was blown on 3ft carved rockwork. But that doesn't change the fact that every themed world we're getting is very, very similar aesthetically and narratively.

It's also because that's what's heavily featured in today's pop culture in movies, books and television shows - that's why parks want this type of theme, and it makes sense. A lot of the time it actually has nothing to do with budgetary requirements, it's to do with 'what would actually work'. I know you're probably going to disagree with me, but it's a fact.

When it comes to the marketing of this ride - I'm going to point to one key fact here: IT'S A FORM OF GHOST TRAIN. It isn't your everyday, run of the mill carnival ghost train, or cheesy seaside park one, it's novel and unique and the marketing actually resembles Derren's shows themselves. They have an air of mystery, intrigue and underlying themes of the supernatural/horror.

Personal preferences aside here, they've not stated "You will ride and **** yourself it's that scary", so I don't quite understand why people are saying they're marketing it too scary? They're marketing a horror ghost train product, why aren't they going to make it look spooky?!

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

I haven't actually found the whole campaign that "scary"? It's been creepy, spooky and intriguing, but not scary. Certainly not as scary as Saw or Swarm's campaigns, for example. I can see why the creepy stuff might be off putting to some though, since that can affect people easier.

I get the argument people make with the derelict theme being done, but they're all so different. Tidal Wave / Amity is a humorous, light hearted take on destruction. Saw is the run down, abandoned warehouse which is supposedly empty. Swarm is putting you in middle of a disaster which is happening there and then, and is a bit more serious. This is meant to be a completely different feel to any of those, and hopefully it comes across that way when it's open.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Well, yeah, I do disagree. We're so predictable. <3

...But also, you are wrong, they did say somewhere it would be pant poopingly terrifying.

Spooky is one thing. Mystery and spooky, yes, clearly it needs to be that as like you say that is Brown.

But in the big reveal video they did on announcement date, Brown himself said it was going to be terrifying. Exact words escape me and I'm on my phone, but he did. That definitely is a thing.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Fair enough - but maybe it is? Maybe it will be a terrifying experience? At the end of the day, the marketing teams know more than us enthusiasts about the products they're selling and whether you like it or not, they know the demographic they're aiming for - so it really makes no difference what anybody thinks of it.

Also, he says "A thirteen minute journey through fear", not "terrifying journey", just FYI.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

That's the quote, thanks for checking. Well, a journey through fear sounds to me like it's meant to be pretty hardcore on the scary scale, tbh.

I don't like the "they know what they're doing" attitude. Next you'll be telling me Thirteen and Swarm as ride experiences were accurately represented by their marketing?

Regardless of marketing accuracy, DBGT is another grungy theme. Personal preferences surely cannot overshadow the fact that we have a lot of those now and that variety of mood is something crucially important to theme park design yet... Well, lacking.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Swooping through a crashed plane, destroyed church and upturned/broken emergency vehicles? Yeah, Swarm hit the nail on the head tbh.

The less said about Th13teen the better.

This ride intrigues me. Although I'd hate to go on a busy day, I bet the queue will be slowwwwwwww.

The Periscope interview on the reveal day said something like there'd be 'over 200 people on the ride at any one time'. The minds wanted site said each carriage has a capacity of 60, so that'd suggest 4 groups of riders at any one time.

So if that holds true and my maths is correct, we'd be looking at a throughput of about 1100pph in theory, which is pretty good by Thorpe's standard. :)

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

That's not a bad starting point, but factor in reliability and downtime for "essential cleaning" and it'll aptly be a nightmare. :p

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

The Victorian train adds an interesting aesthetic to the entropy theme that has been common.
They can add Victorianess.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

What intregues me the most is that this will be the first horror-themed attraction to use VR. This is what's going to make it scary.

VR is an isolating experience. Once you have that headset on, it's just you, alone in that virtual world and the only way to escape it is to close your eyes. Its not the same as laughing your way through a scare walkthrough with a group of friends. And from the sound of it, you could be next to someone who is experiencing a completely different thing.

God I'm actually really excited for this now :D

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Only Thorpe could open a horror attraction the Friday before a Friday 13th. Bless XD.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

^ Exactly what I posted on Twitter. A massive combined brand like Thoroe and DB would certainly steal the show amongst the other crap that gets released on that day IMO.

Anyway, here is the PR.

Derren Brown’s Ghost Train, which can only be found at THORPE PARK Resort, will open to the public on Friday 6th May.

A head-spinning train journey of between 10-15 minutes, the like of which guests will never have taken before; this brand new attraction will provide a heady mixture of exhilarating live action sequences, 4D special effects, grand-scale illusions, next generation technology, and physical transit. No place for spectators, guests will play a major part in the action which will leave them questioning where perception ends and reality begins.

THORPE PARK Resort’s biggest and most ambitious investment to date, Derren Brown’s Ghost Train takes theme park attractions to a whole new level, promising to derail guests’ minds with a series of multi-sensory experiences. Like its inventor, this is a smart ride that also has 12 multiple knee-shaking journeys and two endings - so not only will no two ‘rides’ on board Derren Brown’s Ghost Train be the same but every journey will provoke an intense response and reaction in each individual ‘passenger.’ So whilst guests may share the journey with others, the experience will be an individual one – and every journey, every sensation and every fear will be quite unique.

Derren Brown comments:

“I am proud and excited to have been working with the creative and operational teams at THORPE PARK Resort and Merlin Magic Making to completely reinvent the concept of a Ghost Train for the 21st Century.

“Visitors can look forward to experiencing a heady and heart stopping combination of next generation technology, grand illusion, special effects and live action that will completely rewrite the rules of what a theme park attraction can deliver.

‘’We are determined to deliver a revolutionary experience; as such we are constantly tweaking things to ensure they’re the best they can be.

“I firmly believe that this kind of multi-sensory, mind blowing attraction represents a glimpse of what the future holds for theme parks the world over.

“Akin to my shows, I ask that when you board the train, the secrets remain mine and yours to share and fear, and you don’t spoil the experience by telling others ahead of their visit.

“People should also note that this is not an experience for the faint hearted. But to ensure you are in the right frame of mind to take full advantage of the journey I will send you on, I refuse to reveal any further details past the doors of the carriage.”

Derren Brown’s Ghost Train will be housed within an extraordinary purpose built warehouse that encompasses 2306 square metres and is tall enough to house nearly three double decker buses. The centrepiece of the attraction will consist of a 20 metre long, four and a half metre high, seven tonne Victorian train carriage that is suspended in mid-air over three metres above ground by iron chains. A carriage which passengers enter via a metal bridge, and where the mind-bending journey begins in earnest in what appears to be a large disused Victorian warehouse.

Guests will be subject to a variety of multi-sensory surprises throughout the journey including a series of high-octane live action sequences where participants will take centre stage in the story. And like his TV shows and stage performances, Brown will toy with guests’ minds and perceptions throughout the journey on board the Ghost Train until they no longer know what is real, before leaving them on a cliffhanger ending.

THORPE PARK Resort will open for 2016 on Thursday 17th March with over 30 thrilling rides and attractions and live events to enjoy. As well as Derren Brown’s Ghost Train, there are new challenges to test in I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here, based on classic moments from the last series as well as iconic rides including the UK’s first winged rollercoaster THE SWARM, SAW – The Rid, the world’s first horror movie themed rollercoaster, STEALTH, one of Europe’s fastest and tallest roller coasters and COLOSSUS, the world’s first ten inversion rollercoaster, as well attractions such as RUSH, the world’s largest Speed Swing.

Why not add even more bite to a fun-packed visit by booking a stay in the THORPE SHARK Hotel. The unique accommodation features 90 bite sized rooms that sleep up to four people and includes free Wi-Fi, flat screen TV entertainment packages including Angry Birds App and on-demand movie service.

NOTES TO EDITORS

*The Victorian warehouse is modelled on a real Victorian train depot located near Willesden Junction that specialist theming artists at Merlin Magic Making spent months remodelling from scratch both in architectural style and scale. They looked at everything from grand windows and brickwork column buttresses, down to the smallest of details such as the keystones above the windows and stone lintels, and even matched the exact brick tone taking into account the Victorian ‘coal power plant age’ discolouration.

*The Victorian train carriage itself has been modelled on an antique carriage built in 1903; the North Eastern Railway clerestory bogie composite coach No.3071.

*Age and other restrictions will apply to the ride – check the website before you visit

*Next generation technology includes HTC Vive’s VR headsets which are one element of the overall experience. HTC’s Vive is a market leader which has received a phenomenal reception at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Las Vegas. The Vive headset has a stunning high-definition display, running at 90 frames per second, and together with Steam VR from Valve, offers class-leading motion-tracking technology ensuring positional and rotational tracking sub-millimetre accuracy. A unique feature is that multiple headsets can work in the same space with no impact on performance. This makes it the ideal choice for Derren Brown’s Ghost Train.

Well, it's not gonna be the first horror-themed attraction to have VR, there's been a couple in the USA (albeit not at theme parks), but been standalone unites with custom designed VR headsets and special effects :)

Whilst I too find it amusing, I assume it's more to do with Derren's schedule. His tour is in Woking during the last week of April, then he has a convenient 9 day gap before the tour continues in Bristol. I guess Thorpe would want him to be around on preview / press nights for all that extra publicity and whatnot?

Also, on the topic of VR, am I right in thinking this is going to be the only current theme park attraction where it's compulsory to wear VR headsets for the experience (bar that weird German VR coaster that closed 12 years ago)? Just curious

There's one in London in the next few weeks too.

Not a ride as such, but, a VR horror experience.

I'm gonna struggle to seperate this out from that though seeing as this a ride in the very loosest of terms!

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Yeah there is, it also sold out within two weeks of tickets going on sale. It's bringing new tickets out soon though apparently.
