What's new

Obama at it again..

As an art student at uni, we get a whopping 4 month summer holiday. Ha. :] Actually, It's been longer because I havn't had lectures and actual lessons and **** for 5 months. But OFFICIALLY 4 months.

Personally, I think the US system is better. Instead of having random brakes scattered throughout the year. When you go back to school after a brake it takes time to settle back down to normal.

I think the best thing to do is have a long summer, but for there to be more pressure to do summer project based work or to get kids into work experience or other summer activities. This is all more common in the States than the UK.

I think its easy to agee with Obama if you are not really going to be effected by this but if I were a student in the US I wouldn't be liking this idea. But I certainly have faith in Obama and I think he knows what he is doing and in the long run if the school kids end up with a better education they should be thankful.

Wrong. Completely Wrong.

I agree with Xpress. Frankly this ticked me off real bad. If this happens I'm going to try and get home-schooled.

Homeschooling is much better. I get a much better education in homeschooling than anywhere else (and I would know 'cause I've done public and private schools as well). Instead of learning the crap public schools would teach me, I'm learning things I need to be learning.

You also get better hours, I finish around two and start around 8:30, with some breaks in between, most days.

As long as students actually go to school and lessons/lectures... thats the first thing. People who want to do well in school will normally do well.

As for the amount of time you should get off... I think Uni has it right. A big summer break, and some time for Christmas and Easter. No half terms.
Those 4 months i have off at Summer i spend resting and doing a ton of work to earn experience and money.

Are you saying this because you are Republican or actually know what you are talking about?

Of course, you went to a:

1. ****ty schooling system in Florida.
2. A system where they do not teach you very much at that young of an age

You may be getting a 'better education,' but from the numerous people I've known over the years who have had a homeschooled education, they lack in many other areas which schools help foster.. like many social aspects of everyday life.

That's <img> loads! Seriously, this does bring into question why some people say Americans are stupid....

Obama is doing great for America. He's trying to give you FREE HEALTHCARE and you lot just throw it back in his face.

He's improving you educational system, and then you feel you want to assassinate him.

Geeze!

I could not agree anymore.

Uhmerikunz never fail to entertain me.

First it was the uproar about state run health care.. now this.. oh and the creationism/evolution thing is always good for giggles too.

The idiots have truely taken over the asylum!

Oh NOES!! Kids at school more? Not sitting around all summer being "bored".. yeah sounds REALLY stupid! LOL

It's great fun to watch all this from the sidelines (it helps me remind myself why i moved to canada and not south of the border)

^ What are you talking about? Canadian school systems are almost exactly the same.. Lol.

And Ben, you always pop in with something hilarious, I love it, haha <3

He doesn't like to be around stuff that most Americans couldn't give two ****s about. Apparently, it is just too hard to bear in his rough and tumble life style.

I cry for you Clam.

I worry with homeschooling that you're not learning from wide enough sources. How does anyone know what is more valuable to learn in the first place? Surely that's subjective? And can only be judged on hindsight?

I know.. But it's the logic behind the moaning about it which i find funny.

I dont care what country it is, kids should spend more time at school - especially as they get older .. you know prepare them for real life and all that.

As for homeschooling, well i'm not exactly the most socially adept person in the world - i admit.. But i've worked with people who grew up being home schooled, and their lack of social skills make me look like a blooming stand up comedian!

Not to mention that you cant gaurantee the education being given to the children, with home schooling is necessarily correct. I mean, imagine being taught creationism as fact by some god botherer.. Sheesh!

I have no idea what you're on about! Well done! Proves my point quite well!

Funneee.

Actually, the Canadian/American systems are different.. Been googling the interwebs:

Days spent at school per year:

America : 180 days
England :195 days
Canada : 196 days
Australia : 198 days
Israeli : 216 days
Germany : 220 days
Japan : 243 days

After seeing that - It's no wonder some of the cleverist people in the world come from Japan and Germany is it?

I wont mention anything about America.

(Considers a new career as a teacher now i know how much holidays they get!)

Oh yes, that works. School is nothing like real life.

Well when you work in a full time job that sometimes seems monotonous doing 9-5 I think having longer hours at school would prime you up for it.

The average american gets 9.3 paid days holidays a year.

So you can see why going from school to the "Real world" is a culture shock to a lot of school leavers

Your point? I don't really see one. I just see a pathetic old man who takes every attempt he can to take a cheap shot at a country.

In the end, really, what you say never really matters to.. well.. anyone.

Again, I cry for you, my lesbian seagull. Someday, you shall overcome your petty childishness and grow up to.. I don't know.. MAYBE the level that this site is at.

On that say, I hope I'm there to embrace you fully as a fully functioning part of society!

I just noticed this had nothing to do with the topic.. at all.. just a response to Clammy. Please continue on this nonsense which we call a discussion in the American pathetic high school system and the idiots who inhabit it.

^ You're just as quick to defend America as you are to put down Canada, aren't ya (I almost came very close to putting "eh")?

But no, I agree with you, people need to stop putting down America so much. Look past some stereotypes and stuff, yknow? Besides their health care, which really isn't great, it's a good country that I can see myself maybe living in, in the future.

Im not slagging off america!

I *love* america! Reading whats going on down there always gives me a laugh - what's to hate?

Any chance you guys can vote in Palin next? That'd be hysterical!
