I watched two dvd's over the weekend - Gladiator, an old favourite and thotoughly enjoyed the spectacle. The Ridley Scott Direction is flawless and the cinematography is breathtaking. It is a while since I have actually watched this and I am glad that I did.
The other was an old favourite - Uncle Buck which I just took a notion to watch last night and, although I can't marvel at the sound, picture, cinematography etc, it is just a plain funny film. John Candy at his best, Culkin before he was the ultimate superbrat. Best moments - the question and answer session, the birthday Party, the birthday breakfast....and Bug! LMAO!

I watched a film last night that really really sent my head spinning.
It stars Ryan Phillippe and is called The I Inside. It is one of those really mentally challenging films with a very confusing plot line and sense of narrative. It does not convential linear time and basically is a mental head screw. A Psychological Thriller. If any of you like these films I would suggest you see it. You will be really impressed!

It is probably fair to say that, you have already formed an opinion on the film ?Titanic?. It is, after all, the most successful film of all time. Taking more at the box office than any film before or since - over $1.8 billion. In addition to this it collected 11 Oscars.
There is no question that James Cameron is a master craftsman when it come to action and special effects and in the second half of the film, the effects are jaw-dropping.

Until now, the only way to watch Titanic on DVD was via a non-anamorphic 4:3 transfer. Having been a widescreen tv convert of some 6 years, this really pissed me off.This version leaves the originals hiding in the attic. This new release is wonderful. Split over two discs to offer up maximum bit rate, the picture is simply stunning.

The original Dolby 5.1 track was pretty good. This version has a new Dolby EX soundtrack which is incredible and then, it goes one better with the inclusion of a barnstorming DTS-ES track. Simply stated, if you have a home cinema, you need to get this disc. The DTS track balances quiet moments with those of ball breakink low frequencies.This has jumped to the top of my favourite demo discs.

Sometimes the romance is just a bit too yukkie for my liking but the special effects more than make up for that. Overall a great film which has finally been given the treatment it deserves.

War of the Worlds
Nobody does blockbusters like Spielberg, although Bruckheimer does come close. Take some Sc-Fi, add ILM special effects and you have an absolutly breathtaking spectacle.
After brief character introduction, we cut to the chase with the first set piece - the tripod invaders arrival the sequence is absolutely stunning. The story is told from the viewpoint of a disfunctional family where Cruise is the dumb father and this is the obligatory Spielberg ingredient I suppose.
In essence - a great film, if a little downgraded by the emotional smush.

Over the last two nights I have watched Gothika and then What Lies Beneath.
Gothika is easily the most under rated horror of the last ten years. It's such a great film, I really love it. It's not some dumb movie about kids being stalked and killed, but it does have enough gore and blood in it to keep the blood lovers happy. I just love it because it has a great plot, a fantastic cast and it still scares the crap out of me. Yet noone ever mentions it when talking about favourite horror movies.
What Lies Beneath is another favourite of mine, scarier IMO but no less clever. It's got an age old plot, but it does have some fantastic twists and scares, my favourite being

When Norman looks at her necklace in the bath tub, she's over his shoulder, then when he flops her back to her normal position she's dead [/spolier]. I really like the ending though it is a little far fetched.
I love the whole tone of the movie, it's so unnerving, music isn't used too much, but the way the door creaks, the candle flickers.

I agree Gothica is actually a really good film. Just a pity Halle Berry is so poo. Other than that, it's a actually one of the better horrors I've seen in recent years and has some real "spine shivers" quality to it.
What lies beneath is okay, but it's a little too contrived. However, the direction is sublime! There are some utterly fantastic shots and it's gobsmackingly good at points. However, I love Michelle Pffieffierrrrrr [/nadia] and Harrison Ford and I think it's possibly the worst film they have both done. Plotline: A young girl (Jennifer Carpenter) dies under the care of her parish priest (Tom Wilkinson). While attending college, Emily believed she became possessed. After medical care ceases to work, she turned to her faith. In the care of her priest she dies and he goes on trial for her death. He is represented by a career-minded and driven lawyer (Laura Linney) who does not believe in God. Thus is the story of Emily Rose, told by those in the trial and the priest who watched her through her possession.
The film is based on a true story and what a Story it is. The film last 119 Mins (2 Hours) but it is worth every minute.
If you think this is a typical Exorcism movie...Like the Exorcist; you are completely wrong. Yes, you see how this young girl got possessed; yes, you see what happens and yes, you do see the exorcism...But the film is mostly based in the Court Room. As a certain situation happens in the Court Room, like if the Priest is talking about the Exorcism step by step and how it went, you then get the flashback to the Exorcism.
A couple of recognisable faces in the film but the one person that stands out is the Main Actress...Laura Linney (Erin Bruner in the movie) is an amzing actress who can also be seen in 'Love Actually, Mystic River and The Mothman Prophecies.
The film is not scary and not frightening but it is slightly Creepy and Chilling as it is a Thriller. Don't let the trailer fool you as it picks out all of the Chilling moments in the film and leads you to believe that it is a horror.
If you go to see this movie, purely to get scared then prepared to be dissapointed as it is not scary. During the movie, when I saw it, alot of youths got agitated and bored as they weren't being scared; and right at the end of the film, people were saying it was rubbish and boring...Yes...Because they only came to get scared.
The Storyline is amazing and all the visuals are amazing and really chilling...There are alot of quiet moments followed by a loud noise...but there is always creepy music in the background anyway.
The film gets 5/5 stars from me and I wouldn't hesitate to go and see it in the Cinema again!!

Plotline: A claustrophobic, Hitchcockian thriller. A bereaved woman and her daughter are flying home from Berlin to America. At 30,000 feet the child vanishes and nobody admits she was ever on that plane.
In this modern retelling of a classic urban legend, a mother finds herself at odds with a unremitting flight crew and her own sanity when her daughter vanishes in the middle of a flight, with only a few clues left behind. She must now challenge the boundaries of her will and her mind in her desperate search.
This Intense 'on the edge of your seat' movie brings home alot of feelings. Claustraphobia on a plane, Losing a child in an extremely busy atmosphere and the fact that no one believes what you are on about and they think you are crazy.
There are alot of recognisable faces but the Main Character...Jodie Foster (Kyle in the movie) does an amazing job at her character. A mum who knows what she wants when it comes to her family, and she will do anything to look after them. Jodie Foster also appears in her other well known box hit 'Panic Room.'
The best thing about this movie is that the Main Storyline is blatently obvious as we get into the film...But, as soon as you believe that what you are being made to think is true, is actually true; the story has a huge turn around and a big twist in the works. You are completely thrown off and you end up on the edge of your seat...wanting to scream at the top of your voice "RUN!!! GO NOW!!!."
Then to make it even better...When the stroy is turned around and you think that how its been turned around is about to be pulled off...Kyle (Jodie Foster) realises whats going on...and she turns the story against the person who turned the story around in the first place!! :O *phew*
As you can see...it is one intense film...and it doesn't help with the large amount of slow motion face reactions...when Kyle (Jodie Foster) has just realised whats going on...and then you get the whole running for dear life in slow motion.
For suspense...I give the film 5/5 stars...for the storyline...it gets 4/5 stars...purely because the way the story twist is done...it's slightly far-feched and makes you say "That would never happen...someone would of known or saw something..."

I have to disagree there with the acting comments Furie. Berry isn't usually that wonderful, but in Gothika I really thought she excelled. She really did a great job going between all the things see goes through. Same with Michelle in What Lies Beneath, because they both have so much screen time, a real flaw would let the movie down, but Michelle does a spectalcular job IMO. Ford on the other hand did what he always does, sucked.
Watched The Ring Two last night, which I was not expecting to match the original, but it nearly did. The first half was great, really should a lot of promise for the rest of the film, some great scares, and a nice story. But, in the last 40mins or so it just died. There was little or no action at the end, which I know isn't the most important thing, but it was just talking really, except for the ending. What the bloody hell was up with the ending? "I'm not you ****ing mother", what a great way to
. I mean, the ending really did let it down. The first half was truely good, and it could have outdone the first (nigh impossible) if it wasn't for such a lacklusture ending. Also, the water was so overdone, in the first it was a few chilling drop, and it dripped off the door handle, but in this one it was just gushing out of everything. MISTAKE. Also, what was up with Bambi's deranged cousins? That made me piss myself with laughter.
Naomi did another great job, but she wasn't as good as she has been before. The little child did an excellent job though, and he looks set to be a truely talented actor, like Dakota Fanning(?), now why couldn't they find some of the kids who can act to be in Harry Potter...

I need everyone's help. I watched Donnie Darko last night, and have never left a movie so utterly confused. It was a truely awesome movie though, one of the best I have ever seen. It was just my kind of movie, so odd, hilarious and it was just, amazing. My favourtie bit was so...

Oh god, i kinda understand what its all about, but I really can't explain it well. My dad can though, so i'll try and get an explanation out of him some time and post it for you. Unless someone else comes up with one first. It something along the lines of Donnie travelling back in time to save Gretchen, and, god, i've no idea. Think I need to watch it again.

Ok, as many people have probably established, there is actually no solid meaning to donnie darko - purely numerous theories and speculations, however I personally believe that space time got messed up by the jet engine falling though it, and Frank comes to Donnie to make him save it, by doing stuff. I mean, I'm currently re-acquiring it as my disk is so scratched I can't watch it, so it's been a hell of a long time since I have watched it.
The whole movie is definitely about reversing something though - in the final sequence, isn't Gretchen quoted from when they did those glasses to replace the hours of darkness in a child's life? "Go back, and replace all the hours of darkness with something better" if my memory serves me correctly at any rate. I really don't know though... as I haven't watched it in so long, I can't actually remember what my theory on it is :lol:.
