What's new

"Now Showing"

Watched that "Oblivion" movie (quite liked it) ; The opening sequence flys past a post-apocalypse world, complete with destroyed coaster...

On closer inspection, Cyclone at Coney Island (given the wheel says "Wonder Wheel" on it)

We are the Millers

Expected an amusing film where all the funny bits you've already seen in the trailers. Totally not the case, it's very funny the whole way through. Hurrah!

Rush

Went to a preview screening tonight. It was fantastic, the race scenes were so exhilarating and intense. Loved it.

Gravity

Don't get the hype, visually it was good. Sandra Bullock taking off suit was better. George Clooney is his smug self.

7/10

Cloudy Meatballs 2

Preachy at the end, clearly making fun of Apple people the entire time. Some funny jokes, entertaining.

8/10

Blue Jasmine

Latest Woody Allen film. I'm not the biggest fan of how he ends his films (he just bluntly cuts to black) but I can see where he is coming from (it's just a tiny slice/looking into someone's life, their story continues beyond the film), this film I feel was one of his that needed a bit more of a proper ending. Too many questions as to where the characters might go and do next etc. However apart from that it's a great film with fantastic performances.

Stranger by the Lake (L'Inconnu du lac)

This was the final film that was shown for the closing of some film festival last weekend. I went because I was invited and there was free champagne afterwards. It was French, which means that there were interminably long scenes of people just sitting and talking, interspersed with loads of cock. It's the most sexually graphic thing I've seen in the cinema actually; it was basically porn.

It's won awards and stuff apparently.

Anyway, it was crap.

Prisoners

One of those films that isn't great because you thoroughly enjoyed it (eg: Schindler's List), but just because it was really well done.

Certainly had me on edge a lot more than most horror films, the subject matter is a bit traumatising (child abduction and torture) and not for everyone. I found some bits a bit too much but it was never done distastefully, certainly one of the better films of the year. Don't go if you're looking to enjoy a night out at the cinema though.

8.5/10

"Now Showing"

Watched Iron Man 3 and Oblivion.

Iron Man 3 was the worst one out the 3, totally prodictable and just boring.

Oblivion kept you guessing but it was just to slow and in the end the story just collapsed on itself. Tbh a totally pointless film and not one I would bother with again.

Gravity in 3-D

I really liked it. The direction was great and the visuals were amazing. Also kind of a scary movie, being lost in space and all those other extreme dangers.... But I just thought the movie was shy from being perfect, I dunno. Still a beautiful film. 9.5/10

Gravity
Imagery and Direction were amazing and are a new high for cinema, but, sadly, story and acting were minuscule. Even if so, it is an unbelievable film to watch. 9/10

World's End
Very funny and entertaining with a great performance by Simon Pegg. Favorite movie of the year, so far. 9/10

Rush
An interesting look into the rivalry between two race car drivers with great acting and directing. 8.5/10

Prisoners
A bit sloppy here and there and pretty predictable but it is still a very well acted and very intense thriller. 8/10

Captain Phillips
An extremely intense and well made film with one of Tom Hank's best performances to date. Probably the best movie of this year, so far. 9/10

Machete Kills

The whole Machete thing was funny when it was a trailer with Grindhouse randomly becoming a full feature. It was an amusing take on really bad/cheesy B-movies. Feels like the joke is old now. Sure there was still the odd moment of amusement at the absurdity of the film but it's clearly not for everyone. One guy at the back was repeatedly yelling "It's ****", I felt sorry for his mate that was with him.

R.I.P.D.

I like the premise of this film. Yeah that's it. I thought it was poorly written and directed and yeah, just had the potential to be a really good fun film and it ended up being very meh. Still watchable on a Sunday afternoon or something though.

I went to see Upstream Color.

It was definitely easier to follow than Primer, but still, when I read some analyses online, I was left thinking, "Oh. =/"

I did enjoy it, though.

Gravity

Story was predictable and gash. Yeah, it looked great.

To be honest, I just wanted to try out a film in Imax 3D, since I hadn't before, and since this has been praised so highly for the visuals, it seemed like a good one to try.

The whole Imax 3D thing is amazing, as were the visuals for this particular film. Too bad the story and the script sucked balls.

Bad Grandpa

If you love Jackass and hidden camera shows, you'll love this film. It's very funny throughout. Looks like they've saved loads more scenes etc for the DVD. Can't wait.

Prisoners

Fantastic cast, brilliant story and extremely intense. It's a very well made film that will no doubt get a lot of attention during the award season.

Captain Phillips

Another brilliant film. I don't like the handheld style of the director but apart from that it's fantastic and all the cast are great.

Bad Grandpa

Laughed my ass off and loved the pageant part. Also can't wait for the extras, or if they have enough, just a 1.5 like they did with Jackass.

Don Jon

Scarlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the same movie? Yes. Both are quickly becoming my favorites (for completely different reasons) and Scarlett was epicly hot in this movie. JGL was fantastic. Tony Danza was great in the scenes he was in, and Julianne Moore added an extra layer of depth. It was a great movie for what it was. The ending was very what? inducing. It was so solid all he way through, and then it kind of just stopped. Very rare a movie should be longer nowadays, but this was definitely one of them.

Thor: The Dark World

Really enjoyed this film, takes a while to kick off but once it does it just gets better and better. It's also very funny at times. The cast were fantastic, special effects are brilliant. There's also two extra scenes, one after the animated credit sequence and one at the end of the scrolling credits.
