Lol! I've been meaning to torrent Mean Girls 2 for a while, but after reading the reviews...


This week I've seen 3 movies:

Grown Ups - Typical Adam Sandler crap really, full of basic slapstick American humour with the usual cheesy family values shoved in. Pretty cringe. Easy to watch though... 2/5

The Hurt Locker - It was different, but was a portrayal of the American attitude to war in the Middle East and didn't REALLY have much of a point (although I think that was the point... haha). 4/5.

Dog Pound - One of the best new movis I've seen for a while. Quite depressing, but it deals with the issue of completely ****ed up teens perfectly. I felt a bit cheated when it finished, but only because I wish it was longer <3. Although, I love anything prison related anyway... 5/5.

and if Anime counts, I have 2 kim recommendations to review:

Higurashi

I've been watching this for the entire month so far so it's quite long (26ep in the first season, 24 in the second, and 5 OVAs), but it's also the best anime story i've seen. The deaths are quite gruesome, but there is a point to them all in the end. As far as the repeating story line goes it's not as annoying as I'd expect.

FLCL

it's ultimate WTF am I watching, I'm only one episode 5, but I'm already saying WTF at every scene, and somehow....I love it. It's so funny, it's so good, but it's sooooooo weird. The artwork as well is very unique.

Battle: Los Angeles

I was hoping it was going to be good, with the expectations it might suck, but it didn't. I absolutely loved it. It had a very District 9 feel to it, lots of mystery that kept you on the edge of your seat. I was locked in from the beginning, and it didn't release until the very end.It was not your typical alien invasion movie, the characters had depth and you felt connected to them by the end. GO SEE THIS MOVIE. This movie will live or die by word of mouth, and it should do great. Yes there are some corny lines, and it is predictable in parts, but better than I thought.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Pretty good actually. Missed Peter and Susan as the other two siblings kinda sucked.. but the rest of the cast did well.

I'm actually a Narnia fan.. same for Harry Potter.. mostly because I hate reading and would rather watch a movie.. ect ect.
 
Narnia? Tangled? Really? I don't know about you anymore bud. Maybe it's the father thing kicking in a little early.
Oh, & it's definitely a little girl if your taste in movies is any sign. :p

Started a new unit in Film Studies on shocking cinema, so first up we watched Evil Dead. This was simply laughable. Very outdated, awful acting, scenes which would fit perfectly into porn...it had everything. But isn't that what makes a cult? Well, yes, but I couldn't help but continue to laugh throughout the whole film. Plasticine usage is epic, and random water spurting out of wounds made me laugh a lot. Ok, it's old and classic, but it was still rather bad.

Went cinema and watched Rango. I really enjoyed this film - good plot (mimicking many films), excellent score, brilliant voice acting and amazing animation - some of the best I have seen. Probably the first animation in a long time which hasn't been made into 3D, so thumbs up from me :)

Watched The King of Kong - A Fistful of Quarters - a very good documentary which I was swayed to watch by Ian's review a while back. I agree with him - it was an excellently made documentary even though I'm not really much of a gamer. I really felt for Steve as he seemed so genuine, and Billy seemed like such a knob. It was really interesting and had a good number of twists to it. I highly recommend, even if you have no interest in gaming or retro stuff whatsoever.

Had a rather epic film watching session round a mate's house this afternoon.

First up was Zombieland
Totally awesome. Apart from the whole "zombies don't run" controversy. We also spent rather a long time discussing how you would operate a ride whilst sat on it, if there's no ride op. Oh, and the weird cycle of the shot tower.
Anyway, apart from that, it really is very good. Very funny. VERY gory, but its comedy gore, so its fine. I liked it.

Next, we watched Gentlemen Broncos
This stars Jemaine Clement, and is written/directed by the same bloke that did Napoleon Dynamite. Now that's a total 'Marmite' film, and this is no different. For starters, if you thought Napoleon Dynamite was surreal and a bit ****ed up, then wait until you see this! To summarise the plot: this kid writes a sci-fi novel, then Clement's character, who is a famous sci-fi writer already, nicks it and releases it has his own next book. The action is intercut with 3 imaginings of the book in question: one of the original author, one of Clement's character, and one of a local low budget film maker. These are all completely bonkers, but often hilarious. These parts kinda reminded me a bit of The Mighty Boosh for some reason, particularly series 2.
Oh, and the kid who wrote the novel is played by this guy who looks quite a lot like Dave_but_not. It was rather distracting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Angarano
So anyway, to conclude, if you didn't like Napoleon Dynamite, then you'll hate this. If you love Napoleon Dynamite, then you still might hate this, but its worth an hour and a half of your life just in case you don't.

Finally, after much anticipation, I actually got to watch Kick Ass
It is brilliant. Gory? Yes. Sweary? Yes. As bad as everyone made out? Probably not. It certainly didn't seem that gory after having watched Zombieland in the same day anyway. The main issue I have is that I thought it was a bit predictable. I'm crap at guessing what's going to happen in films. Utterly CRAP! Yet, even I managed to suss it (not that there's really a lot to suss though, I guess). I don't think it'll be making it onto my list of "all time favourite films of all time, ever", but I did thoroughly enjoy it. Looking forward to the sequel.

The other thing I really liked about Zombieland was how the 'rules' kept being animated in with the 3D text. It was very VERY slick and stylish and really sold the whole film to me. It was excellent!


I've just finished a Bill & Ted marathon (well, both films), and all I can say is: <3

Kimahri <3 Blackadder and Evil Dead ftw

Watched a new DVD yesterday of a film called Suck.

I got it because it was cheap and had random peeps in it like Alice Cooper and the epic Malcolm McDowell. It was well and truly bizzare yet kinda awesome. It clearly doesn't take itself seriously and it's better for it. The story is kinda lame, rubbish rock band slowly become vampires and all of a sudden their popular. They also have the most creepy/weirdo vampire leader and McDowell is like a modern day Van Helsing with an eye patch and all round epic vibe. It's terrible but I think I love it :p


Also watched Sorcerer's apprentice on blu-ray. I still really enjoy this film and I do hope the sequel gets a greenlight from Disney despite the poor box office.


Recently got back from seeing Battle: Los Angeles.

More of a war film than a sci-fi but it was enjoyable, predictable and full of annoying stereotypical American army type stuff. There was also too much of this "lets just throw the camera around" business that I loathe. So it was ok but nothing special. I suppose the CGI was good.

I watched Salt yesterday... It was like somebody sat down and said "we need to remake The Fugitive", then somebody else said "but can we make it a bit James Bond too?", then somebody else added "only how about a sexy female lead?", then another "and we'll give it a twist like she's Keyser Söze or something?"

"So we have the fugitive, mixed with James Bond, sexy female lead and a bit like Usual Suspects?"

"Yeah, no idea how that can fail!"

I've got a pretty good idea actually...
