Marineland of Canada (may be) closing/sold

Ford said Marineland is not a government site and is therefore not part of the plans, according to the Canadian Press and CBC.

Still some semi positive news:

But Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati said the city has been working with Marineland to figure out ways to return it to its former position as a major tourism attraction.

“There have been a number of proposals, and the proponents do come to visit the city for land use and to find out what’s allowed through our official plan and zoning bylaws,” Diodati said, noting the property is approximately “three Magic Kingdoms” large.

“To put it into perspective, it used to be the number one tourist attraction in the country, and obviously animal entertainment has fallen out of favour over the last 60 years. But I can tell you, we’re working closely with Marineland, with the trustees there, working closely with our government partners, to find a soft landing for the animals and to turn that into the economic generator that it once was.”

I'm not as hopeful considering a mayor has way less clout than a premier, but still looks like they are hoping for an amusement park at this location.

If not at Marineland, I would assume whatever is built by the province is in Niagara Falls proper and more like a smaller park similar to what is at Vegas or Mall of America style.

It's a real shame because this park well and truly had potential to be Canada's answer to Kolmarden, being a zoo in a spectacular location with a world-class roller coaster, but it seems like they just took every wrong step on the way there.
The potential is there, just need at least some level of competence in the management sector now.

My family on my dad's side has Slovenian roots and same with a close friend of mine and we have witnessed some family members act exactly the same way as the Holer's did. Extremely debt adverse in the face of losing out on billions in revenue if they just took out a single loan or had private investment, and stubbornness to an extreme degree when the government and public tell them what to do (in terms of the marine life)

The Holer's never spent a dime of their own money or took out a loan to grow the park. You can't run a huge theme park this size off of ticket revenue that's insane it would take 500 years to grow things to the size of Wonderland. They were sitting on a golden ticket and squandered it because of stubbornness and crazy beliefs.

I'm sure if they didn't evict a trailer park and mistreat animals, that would've improved their reputation with locals too.

If a trailer park is the same thing in Canada that it is over here, I suspect the locals were delighted...

"They also say a deal is now in place to sell the land and use it for residential housing and commercial businesses — with the condition that the animals must be gone in order for the deal to go through."

Sounds like any hope of Marineland becoming a new, animaless amusement park are over. RIP.

What a waste.

Very relieved to hear. It was ride or die really.

The deadline in which Marineland had handed the government for approval was this coming Friday, had that been rejected or not met there was a plan in place for mass euthanasia. Right now there's representatives from SeaWorld and three other American aquariums in town with transport containers on site. I get the impression that they were about to start running out of funding and time, so this needed to move quickly.

The feds are happier with this deal as even though the pack is being split up, American aquariums are an easier sell than a Chinese theme park. Further care and support was no longer an option, the alternative truly would've been immediate death.

The last thing anyone would have wanted Marineland to do before f&&king off into the history books would have been to execute 32 beluga whales and two more remaining marine animals. That kind of pish would have left a massive stain on everything, everyone, and everywhere that park was tied to for the rest of time.

The war is won.
