IAAPA 2013

With all the new trains on display I somehow overlooked the new GCI Mini-llennium Flyers.

The trains made their debut today, replacing the old PTCs on Coastersaurus at Legoland Florida.

At a groundbreaking ceremony today Legoland Florida also announced a 152-room building-block themed hotel to open in 2015.

Speaking of GCI. How about this model. <3

Then there's this strange model of Mack Rides Porsche City concept with racing coasters themed to Porsche 911s.

Not the best photo, but how about this playground?

I also found this photo of ARM's new traveling Screamin' Swing ride.

Silverwood actually bought one of those (they also sold 2 more, portable versions I think). It actually looks like a really great ride, from the videos I've seen, as it spin like crazy.

Daytona Lagoon / Boardwalk Amusements in Daytona Beach, Florida bought it!

It appears that CF aren't the only people holding an award ceremony. IAAPA have sent me a PR for thier "Brass Ring Awards" (yes, I did let out a slight snigger when I read it), so without further ado, here's a copy and pasted PR declaring who are the Brass Rings of the entertainment industry! As always, I've bolded what I consider to be the most interesting bits for your skim reading pleasure.

IAAPA Brass Ring Awards Recognize Attractions Industry Excellence in Entertainment, Marketing, and More

2013 Winners Announced

(November 21, 2013) – Hundreds of attractions industry professionals from amusement parks, water parks, family entertainment centers, zoos, aquariums, science centers, museums, and more packed the IAAPA Theater presented by the Wanda Group for the IAAPA Brass Ring Awards ceremony honoring the industry’s best and brightest. The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions presented 69 awards recognizing excellence in marketing, live entertainment, food and beverage, human resources, retail, family entertainment centers, best new product, and best exhibit during the IAAPA Attractions Expo, on Nov. 20 in Orlando, Fla.

The tradition of the brass ring in the attractions industry dates back to the carousels of the late 1800s when rings were suspended above riders; low enough to reach but high enough to pose a challenge. Most rings were made of iron, so grabbing the brass ring was the rare and cherished prize. Skilled riders who grabbed a brass ring earned a second ride on the carousel. Today, the term “brass ring” is synonymous with high achievement in the attractions industry.

Hahaha, "Brass Ring".

There was one other train modification on display that I omitted - these great looking Vekoma SLC replacements from Dutch company KumbaK Amusement Engineering. I can't wait to try them out.

^I don't think I'm going to fly to Australia anytime soon just to try them out.

These trains actually look fantastic. SLC's have decent layouts but what ruins it for me is all the head banging on the restraints. Those solve that issue or at least appear too.

I'd give her a headbanging.

Some interesting stuff coming out this year. Not too taken on the switchback woodies - just really gimmicky and kills any potential pacing. Maybe if used more effectively and creatively it could be fantastic.

So in an example of perfect timing I went to movie world today abd rode those exact trains. While arkham asylum is still a rough ride it is transformed by the trains. No headbanging as there's nothing to actually bang your head again. I actually really enjoyed It.

It did feel like it shuffled a bit but nothing that detracted too much. A good addition to an SLC

That's probably because Movie World only wanted new hangars from Kumbak, instead of replacing the chassis/axles as well. So it's still all Vekoma, up there, just with new Kumbak bodies, so to speak.

This reminds me of the new SLC trains Vekoma created a few years back.

ah204u000og2kbhi4q53n0.jpg

The result was much the same with those - the ride was still pretty bumpy with frequent jolts, but was a lot less unpleasant due to the lack of head banging.

I wonder what makes Kumbak think their produce will succeed when Vekoma's own redesign didn't seem to go anywhere. I wonder if it's a matter of cost. Perhaps Kumbak's solution is considerably cheaper than buying completely new trains from Vekoma themselves.

Again, it depends on whether it was just the hangers that were replaced, or the main axles/chassis as well. By keeping the original chassis and just replacing the hangars, they're just giving you less surface area to smash your head into. The track also plays a massive role, too.

I prefer the look of the Kumbak ones, myself. More of a lapbar, and less of an over the shoulder vest. They also offer chassis/axles as well, which I'd be interested in seeing.

KumbaK haven't really built any great wheel assembly replacements. All of their trains I have tried have been more or less the same in terms of rough ness, as the old trains.

If I owned a park with an SLC I would go to Vekoma for new trains. If I were to replace only the lower part of the train, then I would consider KumbaK and the new Arkham Asylum style replacement.

Really?! Did you ride Stampida pre Kumbak? It definitely deteriorated with the changeover.

I for one can't stand Kumbak or their products so I'm really not too fussed about these new trains at all.
