^They're not.
They're basically a way of getting the train up to speed to complete the circuit, without having any real kick to them at all.
Personally, I see them simply as a means of propulsion, rather than an actual feature of the ride experience like you get with LSM/LIM and hydraulic launches.

About the trains: I think that the reason they look that way is lack of decals. If I recall correctly the Cheetah Hunt trains looked pretty cheap too until they put stickers on them. I could see some mud splats put on there or maybe generic graphics of sorts.

The one at Aqua Stadium seems to have a decent kick, but then again, maybe it's because it's launching through a hairpin curve and partway into the vertical loop?

^ It's more to do with what follows the launch I think. There's literally no time between that and the loop. The launch itself is weak; that's what I was pretty much basing my last comment on.

This looks just fantastic. I can imagine how great it will be with all the themeing when completed.
And since yesterday a trip to Djurs is on the cards for June this year
