What's new

Derek's Dueling Coaster Comp

I hate the stupid indoor sectons part. :p

By the way, when I dowload the CS, should I Open, Save, or Save as? Save right?

And how do you unzip it?

EDIT: So I extracted the folders to C: drive, and then Program Files, then Atari, and then Style, Themed, did everthing you guys said, but it oesn't come on. I didn't unzip (I don't think). Where do you find the CS in the game?

Final edit: GOT IT!

I think I'll do a little bit of both.

EDIT: One side of my coaster ALL finished including CS, Supports, Themeing, Buildings and Layout. Now I have only the layout and a little theming on the other one that I need to complete.

P.S. I am using JCat's Steelworx, Coasterfreaks Station, and finally, ATH Catwalks set. I actually like the CS. :)

FINAL EDIT: Will you take of points for my CS if it is badly placed?

I'm interested in trying.
I'm curious to see how an underground duelling coaster would work. Extended coasters are quite disorienting when built mostly underground. Two with the same colour schemes might be even worse.

^I'd recommend getting the entire NetOn2 package. It contains LOADS of CS, a few new track rides (read: new cars on old track, almost always the Extended Coaster, but still awesome) and a few other nifty things such as invisible paths and new stalls, toilets, etc.

^Really? Invisible paths? I have been looking for invisible paths for a while but was having trouble with the set I downloaded. I'll try the one you suggested.

@scw55: Glad to see we have a newcomer. There are various ways of making subterranean coasters...interested in seeing what you come up with :)

@Josh: For one, I am still not sure if we are doing poll or just my ratings (any thoughts people?). But if it were up to me, yes, it matters how you place CS because it should be equal to (or probably easier than) placing regular scenery. Unless you are referring to things like supports. In that case, I am fairly lenient and I would rather see you make the effort to use CS so I probably wouldn't be very harsh...but still do your best no matter what.

Extended Coasters work very well for POV perceptions (when you cannot experience any simulated forces) as the track is positioned at any angle around the axis (normal, normal banked, 90* banked, banked inverted, inverted). Without the virtual horizon as a reference point you easily get confused. Never made a duelling one before. I'm hoping having two tracks of the same paint job to crank the confusion factor up.
One draw back of Sub-Terra coasters is that when building you think you're creating a long series of tight tunnels. When you go and ride it in a POV it turns out you've made a huge cavern. Also random 'breaking through to the surface' can ruin the effect.

I've actually been playing RCT3 for a very long time, I just haven't really been social with creations. Never really shared my work. I used to enjoy starting my roller coasters after a lift/launch hill of a barrel roll/twist into a Large Vertical Loop, in till Thorpe Park coincidently decided to start Swarm like that... That element visually worked very well with inverted-type coasters.

I'm wondering if my approach will hinder my chances in the contest. I'm not after realism and I dislike a lot of custom scenery. I enjoy building roller coasters that look good in the games engine it runs in.

^To clarify, I meant both a newcomer to the competition and to CoasterForce. And when I said there are multiple ways of making subterranean coasters, I was referring to things besides simply plowing into the ground (not to mention editing the options.txt file, although you wouldn't because you are a purist it seems). Not really sure what you were getting at with the random "POV perceptions" rant, but if you want an idea of how these competitions generally go check out some of the other threads in this section...I have made some extensive reviews here and there if you want to know more about my personal taste.

Oooh, sounds good. Where do I download it?

^This contains a link to the download page as well as some screenshots:

@Pokemaniac: So I just downloaded it and everything went fairly smoothly. Only thing is, some of the scenarios seem to be lacking a lot of CS (that I would guess is supposed to be there) and a few of the items have been giving me the invalid something error. Any idea what's up there?

The NetOn installer automatically assumes that you're using the Platinum version of RCT3, so it creates the folder from the Platinum version if it doesn't find it. Check your Program Files/Atari, there should be two folders from RCT3 there. Take the incorrect one and merge with the correct one.

Also, before using scenery in a park, go to the "Building designer" and open all the custom folders you can find in the scenery lists (there will be a LOT of them). Upon opening, some might promptly crash the game. This is due to scenery being installed wrongly. Remember what folder that was, and remove it from the RCT3 files in the Program Files directory. Then repeat. This might be tedious, but it's better to crash a test park than the parks you're playing with.

Also, don't try to plop the pre-made layouts of the new coaster types. They will crash the game upon placement, at least they do for me.

So if I have both expansions how does it approach that? Because I still only have the one in my Atari folder...

I'll go through the buildings though, thanks for that tip. Also, I had the same problem for pre-made layouts but to be honest I don't really care much if I can have their layouts. Does that mean I can't save designs of my own and use them though?
