^And hence the 12 pages of absolute S**T this topic has created so far.

I'm actually tempted to lock it until we get something of any actual relevance being announced. At the very least I think it would make sense to later delete this whole sorry excuse for a discussion and start over once we get something concrete.

Please do Gavin.

Yeah, but then we'll just get another thread to discuss what we think its name is going to be.

Oh, please do, i am starting to get tired of looking at "new posts" and hoping that there would be some actual information !, if i were you guys i would lock it now that we have all had enough time to "speculate" and re-open the topic once some ride plans or "concrete" interviews etc have been released...

No need to get your panties in a twist.
We were discussing possible sites for the ride amongst other things, I don't see how it harms you.

If don't want to be part of the discussion, don't post in it.
We won't miss you I promise.

This is meant to be a discussion board for theme parks, right? So guess what, people want to discuss a new coaster that's coming to Alton Towers.

Whether it's complete speculation or factual information should be irrelevant, these boards are designed for fun, correct?

So therefore people are discussing a new coaster coming to Alton Towers, whether it is full of complete rubbish or factual information shouldn't bother anyone because the whole discussion is meant to be FUN. That's what CF is about?

Just because you have the power to lock this topic Gavin, and you may feel this topic is full of rubbish. I feel that your opinion shouldn't outweigh the majority that are actually enjoying this topic.

Gavin's having a problem with the posts basically making up random **** about what the ride will (apparently) be...

Which is fair enough...

I forgot, did CoasterForce become a no fun zone in 2007 or 2009?

I have to be honest. Having had a browse through the posts i think people are being a bit harsh on AT in general. I dont mind that its becoming a proving ground for ride development.

I also think whilst the hype was over the top for thirteen the ride itself isn't as bad as some of you make out. Its fun, which is all it is meant to be. I'm pretty certain some members are seeking the kind of thrill that sky diving without a parachute could bring!

Whilst the prospect of a new coaster in 2013 maybe an anti-climax aready for some of you, i think you should perhaps wait and see. Alton occasionally comes up trumps, and as the merlin group seem to be making a huge investment in general of late. Remember AT gifted us with Nemesis and Oblivion.

As for the location of the coaster. There really is only one place it can go, which is in the x-sector. Which in all honesty is looking a bit tired these days and lacking in decent thrills.

So before passing judgement, lets see how it develops.

Anti-climax as in 2013 being a long way off ?
I don't think anyone could have expected a new coaster any sooner. It used to be a four year wait, at least it's 3 again from Thirteen.

I think prob 60% of the opinions in this thread are optimistic. If LC12 is anything to go by I'd say SW7 looks a lot more promising than Thirteen at this point. Plus they have said this is going to be a white knuckle ride so hopefully it will be a worthy successor to Alton's 90's coasters.

Nemesis is a masterpiece, Oblivion was a world's first and is totally intense... Then air was cool but nothing spectacular, Rita was fun, heck even good, but there are better accelerators out there & the design had none of the ingenuity seen in Nemesis and Oblivion. And then Thirteen ...

In the 90's Alton was THE park- they had the X factor or whatever you want to call it. Tussauds came in and bought it in 1990, stuck in RMT and HH for the 1992 season (first year I went woot!) both awesome rides (Duel is not). Then later came the amazing B&Ms. Imo air was when they started to drop the ball. Not because it's not white knuckle ... but because it's a bit meh. Thing is Alton don't need to make killer rides anymore because they're the UK's No 1 attraction and people will still go every year for the old ones.

But if they did make something that rivalled the old rides it would be glorious.
Imo a B&M terrain Wing Walker could be just that ride.

Alot of people I've spoken to recently and gone to Alton Towers with seem to be unimpressed with Nemesis. Air and Rita tend to get the "favourite of the day" status. It's strange because back in the late 90s and early 00s I just remember everyone loving Nemmie, enthusiast or not, but lately it's loosing it's limelight. Maybe it's roughness is getting to the GP. I personally think it's the best ride there, but obviously Merlin takes what the GP have to say when building a new ride.

Ever since nemmie, alton has been so focused on giving an experience rather than thrilling the guests, and rightly so, I think Alton has a well balance selection of these "experiences", I mean they already they have one of the most thrilling coasters in the world it's nice to offer something different. But maybe it's time to renew their thrills for the next generation of coaster junkies with a new iconic beast. That's just my inner fanboy having some wishful thinking though.

I think the issue is Bob, simply familiarity. People want something new, not the same old, same old.

We're very different from most people. We don't just go to one theme park, once a year and ride each ride maybe once.

We got to multiple parks, multiple times and ride the same coasters over and over.

For most customers, they've been riding Nemesis for almost 20 years now. Okay, they've probably only been on it that number of times, but that's fine. If they wanted to ride on it more, then they'd go to the park more often. They don't, so they've "been there, got the tee-shirt".

air and Rita are "new technology". For people only going to the park once a year, they're still new rides. How many launches did you go on before they became a bit dull? How long did it take you to reach a real opinion about Rita? Probably about the same amount as most people have ridden it, if they've been every year to Alton for their annual trip.

This is why parks need to keep adding, almost "no matter what". The public get bored much quicker that we do, despite not riding as often as we do.

On top of that, parks need to try and make their new ride "special". Alton is particularly vulnerable to this, as it's set a precedent. Yet, there's not as much scope now for something new, and Alton are very tightly limited. Hence we end up with mixed bags like Thirteen.

Maybe it's roughness is getting to the GP.

Enthusiasts sometimes mention Nemesis' roughness, I honestly don't think it's got any. It's not smooth as glass like Inferno, granted. It's an old B&M and as such has a little character but it's not rough. There are no spine jolts, it does not hurt, far from from it, I'd actually say it was smooth.

Now Dragon Khan, 1995, that is another old B&M and imo that is a little rough. I have experienced a spine jolt on the helix on that numerous times. I think it was the purple/blue train (2007 season).

Here are the places it could go:
1. The Gardens - That massive area with fountains and towers and plants. Personally, I quite like it but AT could put a massive ride on top of it!
2. Dark Forest - Tie-in with Th13teen?
3. Black Hole Site - SAW_gameover has found a picture of where Black Hole used to be and there's some metal garage thing with a blue plastic tent cover over it. (<--- Most likely!)
4. BUY MORE LAND.

Here are the reasons it cant :p

1. Grade II* listed and can't be touched with anything but the most delicate of garden pruning implements.

2. Thirteen and RIta are taking up the only available space in Dark Forest.

3. The Black Hole area is actually very small. You could only get a very compact coaster in there (as Black Hole was). Think G-Force at Drayton kind of size.

4. There is no more land to buy. Alton has villages on three sides and a hotel complex on the other. The only places they could even think about buying are beyond the hotels, which are no use to the park at all.

Reading this post may help you...

This image from the Long term development plan shows the possible sites for coasters which they have outlined in purple.

The old Coaster corner site is the best bet I think.
