VR-Coaster virus hits Six Flags

I'm gonna place a solid hunch on the alien thing getting an "enhancement" come end of June to match up with new Independence Day movie...

This is pretty ****.

I've heard from people who rode Mack's VR take on the Vekoma family thing at Fun Spot during IAAPA that the wheels slipped in the rain putting video out of sync inducing nausea!

I don't trust the B&M conversion to be adequate, honestly, so I have zero hope for the others.

There are so many issues, but I find the VR to be a fundamental misunderstanding of why coasters exist and are so loved? Does anyone else feel like they literally will take away what is special about coaters as amusement rides? Only coasters let you physically fly through the real world. Only coasters. So why turn them into glorified simulators?

They're not going to sync right. People are going to get really ill. The impact on operations will be dire, in my opinion, cutting hundreds of people a day from riding.

And most important, I don't think people are going to care?

VR is the kind of thing you'd go to a science museum, or gaming convention, or special event to try out. It's the kind of thing a small stand alone in a big city you'd pre book. I just do not think anyone is going to make a trip to a park especially to try it, or that it will be good enough to enhance their day whilst there?

None of these will last long term.

Yes. Yes. YES! I couldn't agree more.

I hope not. I hope this bombs terribly and they can get back to running good coasters efficiently.

I'm hoping one season, until they realise it's a nonsense.

Oh FFS!

I get the obsession with the quick, short term marketing gimmick. Frankly I'm sick of it, and think it's a pain in the arse that is leading to some stupid, detrimental, short term changes in the industry, but clearly there is something in the MBA mindset that says that this is smart business sense. I disagree.

What I really don't see the point in is this sudden obsession with trying to retrofit a bunch of existing attractions with VR like this. I can see the appeal of well-implemented VR as a concept, and reckon that manufacturers could create some truly amazing ride concepts if they were to design those rides from the ground up with VR in mind. Can you imagine something like Curse of Darkastle or Huntik if it was designed with that level of quality and attention to detail but using VR right from the start?

The thing is, I wonder whether these short term retrofits are going to ruin people's perspectives of VR and kill the "proper" VR attractions dead before they even make it to the drawing board. If someone has a poor experience of VR on some painful Arrow coaster, are they ever going to want to experience a VR attraction again?

It would take time to get used to VR. I tried playing Oculus once and it was dizzying. I don't think being in a coaster would make the feeling much better. And isn't it much more enjoyable to see real surroundings while on the coaster? It gives the thrill. The VR surrounding just doesn't appeal to me that much.

That all looks very clever - the shooting-element is a bit rubbish though I think (dark-ride shooters go on for a lot longer than the average coaster and often you miss a lot of the effects if you are concentrating on the shooty stuff).

Interesting then, jury is still out on it all tho'

How do they manage the "warming up" of coasters throughout the day? As JoshC. noticed, in the video above it seems like things get out of sync. Do they have some way of speeding up/slowing down the video so everything works still?

I'm sorry, but I think this looks ****.

The VR and the POV were recorded on different runs I believe. Which is why its out of sync at the end. I also believe the speed of the video is based on tracking the distance traveled by the wheels on each run.
I agree the graphics suck too though. I guess its because they have to run on a smart phone.

Yeah, the Mack ones at least tell how fast the train is going and speeds up/slows down the footage accordingly.

Which is clever at least? Dunno, trying to find something to really like about these things xD

I've heard that the first day at SFOG for VR was horrendous. Someone said the line reached 6 hours, with 6 minute train dispatches. I don't think this will work.

Even the animation looks rushed. Looks like a low quality game you get as an app.

I'm trying to figure out whether the animation is made by MackMedia. I've seen their previous work and is no where near as bad as this one.

Oh dear. If this is true then it's not looking good.

One part of me thinks "Good, it'll highlight why it's a bad idea from an operational standpoint", but then other part of me is disappointed that this might mean you won't get to ride these coasters if you visit the parks.

A friend of mine was there yesterday and th wait was only at 2.5 hours - a wait he was willing to do again because he really enjoyed the experience.

The problem is that often those making these creative decisions and those dealing with guests complaining about long lines are at two ends of a bone, and whatever brings in money wins out, wihout looking and seeing "oh actually our guest feedback is terrible, we're losing money from refunds and missed potential of revisits". I'm CERTAIN that's why Six Flags will forever stay in the dirt when it comes to finances, because their operations are just diabolical, nation wide. Worse in some areas sure, but there's clearly no company ethos to keep staff on their toes.
