Top 25 Favorite Movies

1, Wings Of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin)
5, Ikiru (To Live)

Finally saw both of those - when they were eventually sent - after your recommendation.

Wings of Desire was a little pretentious for my liking, but I can understand why people would like it. It's very "art" Very good though, interesting and had Nick Cave so a definite bonus. I suspect that it may have a lot more impact if I'd grown up in a post war Germany ;)

Ikiru was brilliant. A kind of subtle, Asian Citizen Kane. Really moving and poignant. It's one of those films (like a lot I missed form my list, such as The Seventh Seal) which I think is superb and adored watching, but it's not something you watch for "entertainment", but for mood or simply to show somebody else. It's not a "I haven't seen Ikiru for a year now, time I put it on again" type of film. But yes, superb stuff.

7, Oh Brother Where Art Thou

Oh yeah  Hmmmmm... That should go in my top 25 somewhere, I adore that film. I also loved Fargo (and most of their other films), but OBWAT is the one I could watch over and over and love every time.

I also missed The Blues Brothers off my list - bugger.

17, Brazil

I want to put Terry Gilliam films into my favourites, but I just can't  I love Time Bandits, and I think Brazil is brilliant. I've enjoyed each of his films but... They're all oddly... Erm... "flat". It's hard to explain, but they all feel like what they are - actors on a set. They're almost more like a filmed stage play than a true movie - if that makes sense?

It's odd because when Hitchcock takes a stage play and puts it on the screen (like Dial M or Rope), it feels more substantial than Gilliam's work.

I think there's a few of his films would hit my top 50, and I'd definitely say Brazil is "a film everyone should see before they die" (even if just to say "why did I have to see that before I died" :p ), but yeah, I can't quite get them down there into a top 25.

Bollocks, missed The Nightmare Before Christmas off my list too (talking about directors who aren't quite as good as they first appear ;) )

Those are my favorite films, but not necessarily ones that I watch over and over again - even every year or so. They are just the movies I like the most and have watched each several times. If the list were which movies have you watched the most or would watch over and over again, my list would be completely different - probably with Oh Brother Where Art Thou at the top.

Kimi - I put Akira in there because it's the one that got me into anime, but you would probably disagree with most of my favorites in that genre anyway. :p

I also just realized that I don't have a single film from this millennium in my list. I know I've seen some really good films that came out in the last dozen years, but none of them are quite up there. Perhaps that will change as I get older and memories of more current films grow fonder. :?

Life of Pi

Soooo close to being the best list yet, and then you have to ruin it with a preachy load of boring, pretentious bull **** like Life of Pi <//3

"awww, look, the nice foreigner found God on a boat"

Piss off.

Very hard topic for me as I'm not really a film buff. I tend to enjoy films with good soundtracks or that have very atmospheric sets, that others typically find gimmicky. In no real order:

Withnail and I
V for Vendetta
Friends and Crocodiles
Blues Brothers (both are fab)
Flight of Dragons
The Aristocats (nod also to Lady and the Tramp)
Beetlejuice
The Labyrinth
Nightmare Before Christmas
Sleepy Hollow
Pulp Fiction
The Frighteners
The Village
Romeo and Juliet (Baz Luhrmann)
Scott Pilgrim
Moulin Rouge
Donnie Darko
Garden State
Life of Pi
Back to the Future
Dogma (and a nod to Clerks)
Little Miss Sunshine
Zombieland
Super 8
Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz
Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Children of Men
Pan's Labyrinth
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (although the series is much better)

That's more than 25 but **** it

I despise the new Sherlock Holmes films, they are total and utter trash to the point where I cringed through my hands. For gods sake watch the BBC version instead, it's like a billion times better.

Man, that's tough to pick just 25, much less rank them. I guess my list might include these movies in some order:

Goodfellas
The Dark Knight
The Fugitive
Pulp Fiction
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
The Shawshank Redemption
The Big Lebowski
Fight Club
The Sting
The Bourne Identity (really I like all 3 of these movies about equally)
Inception
Casablanca
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Terminator 2
North by Northwest
Toy Story (admittedly, nostalgia's playing a big role here)
American Psycho
Back to the Future
Saving Private Ryan
The Truman Show
Forrest Gump (sue me)
The Silence of the Lambs
Shutter Island
Patton
Apollo 13

...and then there are probably another 20-30 movies that I could have easily subbed in for all but a few of these.

In no paticular order here's what would be in my top 10. Top 25 would be way to hard to organize.

Ghostbusters
Shawshank Redemption
Cars
Big
Dumb and Dumber
Zombieland
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Avengers
Weird Science
The Terminator

That, um, ah, yeah. Very strange list. Also who else here hates the Avengers?

^ Meh, I don't think it's quite as terrible as people make it out to be. As per usual for a Pixar flick, the animation is pretty stunning at times and there are enough in-jokes and subtle points of humor to entertain older viewers. The main problems I have with it are that the plot is fairly cookie-cutter (actually, it's a straight ripoff of Doc Hollywood) and that the characters are all pretty stock.. it's a very kidsy & unoriginal movie, much moreso than most Pixar offerings. It also shoots itself in the foot by giving tons of screen time to the single most annoying character from any Pixar movie.

You have some films I love like Shawkshank, Big, and Terminator and movies I hate like Cars, Ferris Bueller, and The Avengers. The list is just strange as if I don't know if it's god awful taste or great taste especially for a kid your age. I feel Jordanovichy said it best.

Wow! This was even harder than ranking coasters :p I thought I had a pretty good idea of which flics where my favourites, but I actually had to cheat a little bit since I just couldn't separate the last movies! I'll give it a try to give motivation to my choices as well! :)

1) The Fifth Element Epic classic sci-fi/action/comedy! The environments and design of characters are brilliant! Who can forget Milla Jovovich's Leeloo or Chris Tucker's Ruby Rhod?? Pure Entertainment!

2) District 9 Groundbraking film, combining the first "documentary-style" half with a pure action second half. Great visulas, great acting and great message!

3) Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back I'm a sucker for Star wars and this is the best one. Luke finds out that Darth Vaderis his dad, what else is there to say?! :p

4) In China They Eat Dogs Very good Danish action comedy! Hillarious and non-stop action!

5) My Name Is Khan The most touching film I've ever seen. Way underrated because it's a Bollywood. It's almost as if Hollywood consciously tries to avoid attention of thier movies.. This should have won an oscar! IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, GO SEE IT NOW!

6) Wall-E Best children's movie ever. Beautiful story, almost entirely without dialog. And with an up-to-date message!

7) Alien Best horror film of all time! A true classic.

8) Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi
Second best Star Wars.

9) Lion King Not quite as good as Wall-E, but still pretty damn good! A classic story done into perfection!

10) Resident Evil What makes this film outstanding is the soundtrack! Great action and scare-effects too, and Milla Jovovich is as brilliant as always :) Much better than it's crappy sequels..

11) Lock Stock and Two Smooking Barrels
Guy Ritchie at his best! High speed action/crime/thriller, a very funny one too!

12) Into the Wild A thoughtful film about the capitalist society we're living in. You won't walk away untouched after seeing this movie!

13) Flickering Lights Yet another Danish action comedy. The Danish know how to make their films!

14) Pan's Labyrinth I believe everyone have seen this one? Great fairy tale. Beautiful film!

15) Hot Fuzz The first pure comedy of the list. There are many funny movies out there, but it's rare with a film where you're laughing just as much the second time around. Nick Frost and Simon Pegg sure know what they're doing!

16) Batman: the Dark Knight Epic action movie. Loads better than the other two Nolan films. Do I need to say that Ledger was brilliant in this one?

17) Star Wars: A New Hope The least good Star Wars film. The movie that started it all, where we discovered the force. Yet the other two are so much better films!

18) The Hangover I've never laughed as much as when I saw this movie the first time! Not quite as re-watchable as Hot Fuzz, but still a pretty damn good comedy movie!

19) Fight Club My favourite film as a teenager, who could have guessed? :p I still find it really good though!

20) Independance Day The action matine made into perfection.

21) The Fall Beautiful fairy tale, definitely up there with Pan's Labrinth!

22) American History X Touching, horrifing, Edward Norton at his best.

23) Stargate
Wonderful sci-fi movie! To bad all the follow up TV-series sucked big time..

24) Kick-Ass A "kick-ass" action comedy! Innovative.

25) The Departed Everyone got this one on their list. A ton of great actors and an exciting story.

26) This is England A very touching story.

27) Batman Returns I love the old dark, gothic Tim Burton version of Batman. This one is slightly better than it's predecessor.

28) Don't Mess With the Zohan OK, so shoot me? :p I actually like this one, a lot. I almost laughed as much when watching this as I did with the Hangover. And I have every time I've watched it since (which is a considerable amount).

29) Terminator 2 Classic Arnold at his best!

30) Total Recall (1990) Arnold yet again, almost as good as Terminator :)
