Top 10(ish): 2026 Edition - page 132

I doubt I'll have any new entries for next year, but I've more than made up for it this year.

1 - Taron
2 - Helix
3 - Batman Gotham City Escape - Tempted to put this at #1, It's a masterpiece in delivering ejector in a variety of different ways. Plus the hangtime over the gotham city concourse is the best I've experienced. Taron & Helix are like 15 seconds longer though...
4 - Ride to Happiness
5 - Nemesis Reborn
6 - Space Mountain (WDW)
7 - Zadra

I don't think I've shared my list since my Scandinavian trip this summer. Only one new entry for the year, and a minor change.

1. Steel Vengeance
2. Skyrush
3. The Ride to Happiness
4. Voyage
5. Lightning Rod
6. Wildcat's Revenge
7. VelociCoaster
8. Piraten - Previously 7. Still incredible, but felt a minor adjustment was fair.
9. Wildfire
10. Phoenix

11. Iron Gwazi
12. Twisted Timbers
13. Ravine Flyer II
14. Phantom's Revenge
15. Fury 325
16. Storm Chaser
17. Maverick
18. Nemesis
19. Untamed
20. Shambhala

21. Mako
22. Taiga - Felt like a solid step up from Taron and Kondaa, which were easy baselines to compare it to.
23. Colossos
24. Wicked Cyclone
25. Renegade
26. Mystic Timbers
27. Kondaa
28. Taron
29. Millennium Force
30. Fonix

Honorable mention to Rutschebanen at Tivoli Gardens. Got a few rides, and my last ride was pretty wild. Had I gotten more rides or if most or the rides were as consistent as that back row ride, it could've been Top 15. Don't feel like I can rank it based on one ride alone.

Pantheon drops out from the previous 30 spot.

Here's my list of best coasters up to including Mako - my chosen marker for the bottom end of my top tier - so currently a top 27:

Here we go again, then. Hope this is posted in time to count towards the 2025 poll.
Same as last year - no spreadsheets, no scoring system, just made up on the spot based on what coasters I wish I could be riding right now:

1. Steel Vengeance.
2. The Ride to Happiness.
3. Shambhala.
4. Fury 325.
5. Helix.
6. Wildcat's Revenge.
7. Arieforce One.
8. Mako.
9. Kingda Ka.
10. X2.
11. El Toro.
12. Untamed.
13. Kondaa.
14. Iron Gwazi.
15. Wildfire.
16. Taron.
17. Hagrid's.
18. The Voyage.
19. Tatsu.
20. Top Thrill Dragster v.1

22. Twisted Timbers.
23. Phoenix.
24. Red Force.
25. Thunderhead.
26. Behemoth.
27. Outlaw Run.
28. Zadra.

Thassit. Why 28? Cos at 560 creds that's exactly the top 5% of my total count, so all what I consider to be pretty elite coasters.
I used to be a Top 10% guy, but coming up with and ranking 56 coasters just seemed too much like hard work. 🙄
But here are some honourable mentions that I considered: Thunderbird, Hyperion, Guardians, Na Fianna Force, Leviathan, Lightning Rod, Mecaladon, I305, Alpengeist, Montu, Pulsar, The Ultimate, Dutch Goliath, Turkish Hypercoaster and Troy.

23. Wind Chaser - Kentucky Kingdom
24. Boardwalk Bullet - Kemah Boardwalk
25. Top Thrill 2 - Cedar Point

Crossed SIlver Dollar City off the bucket list for my birthday this past weekend. Despite the coasters being down for half the weekend due to cold, I still had a blast. This park is one of the best parks in the country from the amazing setting to the elite coaster collection and great food. I still give Dollywood the edge as the better of the two Herschend signature parks, but you can't really go wrong with the original.

  1. Phoenix - Knoebels
  2. Skyrush - Hersheypark
  3. Pantherian (Intimidator 305) - Kings Dominion
  4. Fury 325 - Carowinds
  5. X2 - Six Flags Magic Mountain
  6. Arie Force One - Fun Spot Atlanta
  7. Steel Vengeance - Cedar Point
  8. Twisted Timbers - Kings Dominion
  9. The Ride to Happiness - Plopsaland de Panne
  10. El Toro - Six Flags Great Adventure
  11. Iron Gwazi - Busch Gardens Tampa
  12. Phantom's Revenge - Kennywood
  13. Twisted Colossus - Six Flags Magic Mountain
  14. Lightning Rod - Dollywood
  15. Outlaw Run - Silver Dollar City - I love RMCs that deliver that perfect level of intensity. Outlaw Run has moments where you feel like you're gonna get ripped from the train combined with moments that let you really take the elements in. Its not a very long coaster but it packs a good enough punch. Night rides are absolutely elite. Its tough to beat that first drop at night. You feel like you're completely at the mercy of the ride. If its your first time, night rides are completely unpredictable. The setting on the mountainside cannot be beat. This and Thunderation were the workhorses for most of the weekend as it was too cold to run everything else.
  16. Superman the Ride - Six Flags New England
  17. Velocicoaster - Islands of Adventure
  18. Maverick - Cedar Point
  19. Hyperia - Thorpe Park
  20. Stardust Racers (Green) - Epic Universe
  21. Stardust Racers (Yellow) - Epic Universe
  22. Time Traveler - Silver Dollar City - This ride made me laugh so much. Its incredibly fun! The forces aren't anything too crazy, but this ride is an elite night ride much like Outlaw Run. Night rides make an already disorienting ride experience that much better for sure.
  23. The Voyage - Holiday World
  24. Wildcat's Revenge - Hersheypark
  25. Pantheon - Busch Gardens Williamsburg
  26. Iron Rattler - Six Flags Fiesta Texas
  27. Railblazer - California's Great America
  28. Wonder Woman's Golden Lasso - Six Flags Fiesta Texas
  29. Siren’s Curse - Cedar Point
  30. Millennium Force - Cedar Point
Powder Keg is so underrated. It has the perfect mix of negative and positive G's and it had the best view of the Christmas lights in the park. Great night ride

Wildfire is your standard B&M looper. Its not as intense or as snappy as the older B&M sitdowns I've ridden but it does its job really well. Top tier night ride

Thunderation isn't the best mine train in America like others claim it to be, but its a damn good one.

I'm a big fan of Blazing Fury so I really enjoyed Fire in the Hole a lot. The line was really long on the busier nights but I lapped the ride on the colder, dead nights. Great theming and the theme song is nice and catchy. I hope Blazing Fury gets an upgrade like this.

Only one new addition for 2025 into the Top 10%, but still a very solid list...

1 Toutatis Parc Asterix

33 Pulsar Walibi Belgium
34 Voltron Europa Park
35 Silver Star Europa Park
36 Shambhala PortAventura Park

38 Nemesis Inferno Thorpe Park
39 Storm - The Dragon Legend TusenFryd
40 Colorado Adventure Phantasialand
41 The Storm Coaster Dubai Hills Mall
42 Lech Coaster Legendia
43 Mission Ferrari Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

There's been some shifting around, but nothing overly drastic.

Following my ride on YoY, and disliking the seating configuration due to it causing me knee comfort (the yoys of getting old?), I'm really unsure on Jersey Devil's placement. I really enjoyed it a few years ago, even if I acknowledged the seating configuration wasn't natural. But yeah, if I went on it now and it caused my dodgy old knee pain, it would fall right down. So yeah, I don't know about that one any more.

EDIT: For some reason the formatting when I copied in a table from Google Sheets went all kablooy. No clue why.

Throwing something different in here; I’ve been experimenting with a new Google Gemini integration for Sheets and asked it to generate an assessment summary. Interesting to see it spot some trends I've also noticed over the years (B&M and Intamin's concentrated in the teens, speed and height mattering most), but also have come across some cool, new AI-identified insights!

Key Takeaways

1. Physical Attributes are Highly Correlated with Ranking

The data shows a strong link between a coaster's size and speed and its ranking (where a lower rank number is better).
  • Speed, Height, and Length Matter Most: The attributes most negatively correlated with rank—meaning an increase in the attribute leads to a better rank—are Top Speed (-0.723), Height (-0.657), and Length (-0.618).
  • Inversions and Duration are Less Critical: While important, the total number of Inversions (-0.384) and Duration (-0.262) have a weaker correlation with the final rank compared to the core metrics of speed, height, and length.
  • The Top Coasters are Record-Holders: The highest-ranked coasters, such as Steel Vengeance (Rank 1, 5740 ft. length, 205 ft. height, 74 MPH) and Iron Gwazi (Rank 4, 206 ft. height, 76 MPH), exemplify these high-performance characteristics.

2. Manufacturing Dominance and Coaster Type Parity

A small number of manufacturers produce the most numerous and highest-ranked coasters, while the distinction between Wood and Steel types has little impact on average rank.
  • B&M (Bolliger & Mabillard) Leads the Pack: B&M is the most prolific manufacturer in the dataset, with 61 coasters, and boasts the best average rank at approximately 91.
  • Performance is Concentrated: B&M and Intamin are the top-performing manufacturers, with average ranks of 91 and 126, respectively. The other most common manufacturers (Arrow, Vekoma, and Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, Inc.) have significantly lower average ranks, ranging from 222 to 249.
  • Wood vs. Steel is a Near Tie: Despite Steel coasters being four times more numerous than Wood coasters (297 vs. 73), the average rank for Wood (182.0) is almost identical to that of Steel (184.8), suggesting that quality, not material, is the dominant factor in ranking.

3. Coaster Attributes Have Significantly Increased Over Time

The visualization of average coaster attributes by the year they opened shows a clear trend of increasing size and speed in the industry, especially from the 1990s onward.
  • The Rise of Height and Speed: There is a pronounced upward trend in the average Height and Top Speed of roller coasters, with modern attractions significantly outpacing their historical counterparts.
  • Length Follows Suit: Average Length has also generally increased over time, reinforcing the trend toward building larger and more expansive rides.
  • Modern Coasters Set New Benchmarks: The highest average values for all three attributes (Length, Height, and Top Speed) are consistently seen in the most recently opened coasters, illustrating the continuous push for bigger and faster experiences.

My last rankings were in April 2024 so to say they are outdated is a bit of an understatement. Since then I've ridden near on 200 new coasters; ticked off big chunks of the bucket list (multiple times) and experienced re-rides on many of my old favourites. Needless to say, now on 504 creds, it's time for an update to mark the end of 2025. Some thoughts below:

My number 1 is a Zamperla

Now there's a sentence I didn't see myself ever bashing into my keyboard. Whilst yes, the crime scene still has Intamin's fingerprints all over it, in the form of a massive tophat & track design (and let's be honest the trains aren't far off either); what Zamperla has done with Top Thrill 2 is an absolute marvel.

This is the first time that I can say the old equation of Hydraulics > LSM's has been truly put to the test for me. Traditionally the acceleration of a hydraulic launch would always do more for me, but there isn't really anything else on the planet like the showmanship of these launches (especially at night).

I cannot accurately describe the feeling of rolling out the station onto the launch track, the train seeming ant-like compared to the towering structure before you. Racing lights count down on the humongous tophat and as they go out, a bowel scraping sub-drop fills the air like the coaster is a beast come to life, mocking your audacity to dare travel its course. The first launch acts as a perfect teaser, before Mr Zamperla cuts the bullsh*t sending you backwards, hurtling uncontrollably at 100mph, body flailing against the tiny (yet comfortable) restraint. Then you rise, rise and rise again. The train climbing higher and higher backwards, and as it slows you leave the mortal realm, hitting what feels like the divine apex of coaster ascendancy. Euphoria. Finally you fall and with one last roar the LSM's shoot you faster than ever before, conquering a tower that felt inconceivable to climb mere seconds ago. The ascent feels easy, yet well earned, and as you dive back down to earth you're again ejected through 270 degrees of freefall bliss, before finally blasting into the breaks.

Now I appreciate that description is very w*anky, and I expect it to induce several eyerolls amongst those that don't think so highly of it, however personally, I f*cking love it. Number 1. End of discussion.

Not the best coaster in the world, but pretty damn good

I've had two separate trips to Cedar Point since my last rankings and whilst it didn't leave me in awe on my first visit, Steel Vengeance definitely proved itself with subsequent rides in 2025. Like a well trained pokemon, SteVe feels like the natural evolution of brilliant coasters like Twisted Timbers and Untamed; with more of the same fantastic airtime, brutal pacing and inversions profiled to perfection. It does a hell of a lot and maybe it would be a little higher without those final 4 thigh bashing bunny hills at the end. The thing that places Zadra above it for me is the variety, where SteVe almost solely focuses on Airtime, Zadra feels like it gives you a tiny bit more breathing space to really take in those initial big elements before slamming you through the rest of its layout.

The Mack Revolution

Gone are the days of underwhelming launches and cookie-cutter inversions, our friends over in Germany are firmly stating their case for the market leader in the extreme category of coaster hardware. Ride to Happiness was the first taste most Europeans had of how far Mack could push it and it's only gotten better from there. Stardust Racers and Voltron are now in my top 25.

Clearly their magnum opus, Voltron is the culmination of everything that proceeded, a showcase of everything they have learned and innovated on since their inception. It is a thrill machine for enthusiasts that love thigh bruising airtime, intense inversions and relentless pacing. Even with the break halfway through, it feels like a necessity with just how much it throws at you. It gets better and better with every ride, and considering I take the outside seat every time, I have no idea where the much criticised "roughness" exists. Well deserved of it's spot at number 2.

Intamin still provide a gold standard

There are 11 coasters from Intamin in my top 25. Consistency is the word here and when Intamin put their minds together for an extreme coaster, it's always going to be great. Since my last ranking both Manta and Maverick have found their way into my list, and despite them being down the bottom end, they won't move with ease.

Near missers

It gets a lot harder each time I look at this list, 504 creds is not easy to whittle down and it feels slightly wrong omitting some of the amazing coasters I've ridden from this list.

B&M have suffered the most. I love a hyper and an invert, yet they can't wow me strongly enough to compete with the other rides here. I think that Mako, Shambhala and Silver Star are all worthy and narrowly miss the cut. The same goes for inverts like Black Mamba and Oziris. Leviathan and Orion are both solid rides, but neither come close to the power of Fury or i305.

Other victims include Mystic Timbers, Phantoms Revenge, Flying Aces, Fonix and Millennium Force. All coasters I love, that just didn't quite make the cut.

Then you have the weird ones that missed out. The Beast, Space Mountain (Disneyland California) and Lightning Run. Strange coasters that exist in a odd space between crap and amazing, yet always calling me back to ride one more time.

Dishonourable mention

Throughout the 20 months since my last ranking there is one coaster that stands out as my biggest let down. It may be sacrilege to some, but no matter how hard I tried, The Voyage just did not do it for me. It might have been the heat, the fact it came midway through an intense USA coaster road trip or just the way the wind was blowing that day, sadly I feel like this may be a step to far.

For starters, I didn't really get any airtime, those first two hills offer so much promise, but my butt barely lifted out the seat. The rest of it just felt like a test of endurance and by the end, I was just waiting for it to be over. I've never had that sensation on a coaster before, even on something rough like an SLC. I can admire the power of it, I just don't think wood was ever designed to handle those manoeuvres at that speed. Maybe I'll go back and try again one day, but with it being such a pain in the arse to get to from the UK, it wouldn't surprise me if that day never comes.

Thank you for those who bothered to read to the end, hopefully it didn't make you feel like I did on The Voyage! See you in 2026!

Wood coasters do seem to depend a lot on various factors. I know I was let down by Boulder Dash, which hurt because the hype was so strong, but it was just kinda lackluster. Not slow, but nowhere what I expected, meh airtime. That day was like 60 and drizzly, but another time was sunny and I didn't care for it still. However I see it's been retracked in recent years? So I wanna try again. Ravine Flyer II was another, just ran poorly. People said oh yeah its not how it used to be. Shame.
Likewise both times I've been on Voyage I found it sensational. 1 I got a high tolerance but 2 yeah I was feeling strong sustained floater basically every hill. I do hope to re ride a bunch of these/get new ones in 26 and hope it shakes up my top 10.

Only two new additions to my top 50 this year, but I got to ride a lot of old favourites (see italicised), particularly in North America. I'm confident it would've been three new additions if I hadn't missed AlpenFury by a week.

Also, Voyage jumped into the #1 spot (from #2), unseating I305 from its 11-year stint as my favourite coaster. Ideally it would've been great to ride now-Pantherian too this year to make it fairer fight, but alas, it still hadn't opened for the season when I visited Kings Dominion.

Pantheon very nearly made the cut (#54). Other notable new credits which impressed me were Fønix, Yukon Striker, Mecalodon and Steel Curtain.

ArieForce One
Easily my most-anticipated new coaster of the year and it didn't disappoint. All 15 rides I had (in a variety of seats) were fantastic. I find that even some of the best RMCs (e.g., Hakugei, Iron Gwazi) can lose a bit of their spark after lots of rides, or in certain seats, or if the lapbar is a bit tighter than usual, but this did not happen with Arie Force One.

Every element goes hard, but some particularly notable ones for me include the raven truss dive at the start which beautifully mixes laterals and sustained floater / hangtime, the zero-g roll after the double-down which has some vicious lateral whip, and the intense banked turn (preceding the barrel roll) which offers the sort of sustained high positive g's that RMCs often lack. I think the quintuple-down ending is a tad overhyped, both by those who revere it and those who complain about it; the airtime is very aggressive but no more-so than previously seen on other RMCs with small bunny-hop sequences like Steel Vengeance and Untamed. Overall though, the airtime is fantastic and plentiful as you'd expect, and I like the pacing of the ride from graceful to progressively more violent as you navigate the layout.

Nitpicky cons? The "car crash" braking at the end does become a bit much after multiple re-rides, and I guess it's not exactly RMC's most novel layout design, but the latter criticism feels of minute importance given that every element is very well-executed.

Orion
This coaster is definitely overly criticised. I was expecting it to be half good elements and half lukewarm elements, and admittedly my one ride in the front row was kinda like this, but on every other ride I had towards the back, the whole ride was great. Lots of highly-sustained, strong floater airtime and very solid positive g's on the turnarounds. The first drop is, predictably, incredible. Obviously it was better later in the day, but even during morning ERT it was pretty satisfying. It is a little on the short side, as most Giga coasters are, but as every part of the ride had substance, I didn't feel short-changed. I do give Leviathan the edge over Orion because the former is a more consistent experience across the train, and perfectly smooth, whereas (nitpick alert) one of Orion's trains had a mildly annoying vibration / rattle. Orion arguably has a slightly more varied layout though.

Yeah was definitely surprised on the steel vs. wood comparison. Bear in mind, this is comparing all coasters, kiddie included, which I'm sure tanks the steel ranking. But interesting none-the-less how tight an average ranking is shared between steel and wood!

New coasters ridden in 2025 are marked with an asterisk. 6 new additions to the top 25 and a total of 81 ridden last year taking my count up to 684.

Condensing it to just the top 25 shows my taste is consistent, all but 4 are either RMCs or Intamin hyper/blitz coasters. B&M don’t enter the frame until Shambhala at #29 and my top 2 traditional woodies are El Toro at #26 and Voyage at #42.

Best new coaster for me was Hakugei. Towards the front of the train that initial double up might be the strongest and most sustained jolts of ejector I’ve ever felt and the rest of the layout is a beautifully smooth and comfortable intensity. It’s not quite my favourite RMC as it has the thing Zadra also has in the second half where you have too much time to brace yourself for the next element. It doesn’t power through the course without catching a breath like Twisted Timbers or Wildcat’s Revenge.

Iron Gwazi I was unbelievably excited to ride and it hit roughly as good as I expected. This rides the most like a smaller RMC of the big ones which is a positive in my eyes. The finale where it ends on the strongest ejector hill before slamming into the brakes at full pelt is fantastic and it has a great ratio of airtime to weird whippy sensations for an RMC. Just one of those coasters where it’s impossible not to raise your eyebrows and pull a face when it hits the brakes, beautiful.

VelociCoaster felt the opposite, it’s a more controlled and refined feeling coaster which makes sense for the park it’s in. There’s something a little sterile about the way certain elements like the outerbank don’t deliver full power and ejector and there’s a lack of positive G’s in the valleys and corners but other sections like the mososaurus roll and the drop off the top hat in the back seat feel more brutal and intense. This is a coaster that feels high quality and expensive. The first half was a great experience in person as it looks a little nothing-ey in POVs but it’s packed with weird moments of airtime in places that aren’t immediately obvious.
