Top 10(ish): 2024 Edition - page 124

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

I'm making this up on the spot. It may differ to the list in my sig.

1. Oblivion: Short but amazing and hugely re rideable. Can't get enough of the drop. Tip: You can feel the drop more on the back row.
2. Wild Mouse: Extreme ejector airtime and laterals. It's a gem.
3. Nemesis: Unique terrain layout but it wasn't quite as forceful last time I rode and it's definitely getting rougher.
4. The Swarm: Smooth and luxurious. It has a great setting and has moments of strong positive Gs.
5. Grand National: Had my first ride on this in 2013 and thought it was meh because of the roughness. This August, I had some hugely entertaining rides at the front with some ejector airtime.
6. Nemesis Inferno: Misty tunnel is refreshing. Loop is much more forceful than Nemesis' and it's a very whorable ride.
7. Air: Really exceeded my expectations. Extremely fun and the drop before the fly to lie inversion is actually fab at the back.
8. Saw: the ride: Wasn't rough but not quite B&M smooth either. Indoor drop blew me away! I had no idea it would be that damn good! The ride would truly kick ass if it remained indoors until the start of the lift hill! Maybe Merlin could do that some day...
9. The Smiler: Had rides that were better than in Easter. I have decided that it is a fairly intense ride and the second airtime hill is fab.
10. Big Thunder Mountain Paris: I know it's for families and kids but it's great. The reason it's so good is because it ends on a high with a big underwater drop. Haven't rode them, but I have observed that the American variants just seem to end after a bunch of turns.

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

10. Incredible Hulk, Islands of Adventure
9. Cyclone, Lakeside
8. Kraken, SeaWorld Orlando
7. Chinese Fireball, Islands of Adventure
6. Lightning Racer - Thunder, Hersheypark
5. Storm Runner, Hersheypark
4. Nitro, Six Flags Great Adventure
3. Skyrush, Hersheypark
2. Bizarro, Six Flags New England
1. El Toro, Six Flags Great Adventure

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

Can't be bothered to check if I've posted somewhere in this thread already, but anyway, here's a top 10.

1 - Kumba, Busch Gardens Africa
2 - Thunderbird, Power Park - My favourite wooden coaster by a mile. Especially after I rerode Megafobia this year and realised it's not as good as it used to be
3 - The Ultimate, Lightwater Valley - Definitely a love/hate coaster and I'm very firmly on the "love" side.
4 - Rita, Alton Towers - I'm a sucker for launched coasters and airtime hills
5 - Nemesis, Alton Towers - Hard to rate. When it's good, it's "number one on this list" good. When it's not, it's mediocre.
6 - Montu, Busch Gardens Africa
7 - Expedition Everest, Animal Kingdom - I liked the build up towards the exciting part of the ride. Everything about Everest just works
8 - Space Mountain Mission 2, Paris - How to take a very mediocre ride and use theming to make it fantastic.
9 - Rock 'n' Rollercoaster, Hollywood Studios - Dear Paris, see Florida to see how to take the exact same ride and make it actually fun
10 - Revenge of the Mummy, Universal Studios - Again, decent ride + good theming = :D

(Top 20 continues: 11. Stealth, Thorpe, 12. Dueling Dragons (have not ridden Dragon Challenge), Islands of Adventure, 13. Incredible Hulk, Islands of Adventure, 14. Oblivion, Alton Towers, 15. Shiekra, Busch Gardens Africa, 16. Nemesis Inferno, Thorpe, 17. Dragon's Fury, Chessington, 18. Space Mountain, Magic Kingdom, 19. Colossus, Thorpe, 20. Velocity, Flamingoland)

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

1. Shambhala
2. Nemesis
3. Dragon Khan
4. The Smiler
5. Swarm
6. Velocity
7. Speed
8. PMBO
9. Jubilee Odyssey
10. Rage

That's as of right now, rides that I'd want to go back on in order. Shambhala I think is clear at number 1 having spent a while unable to split the top three. Nemesis was riding better then Khan was last year for me. Enjoyed Smiler, Swarm is fun, Velocity is brilliant, Speed was a nice surprise, PMBO solely for the first drop, Jubilee Odyssey was just mental and Rage was a great little ride.

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

1. Intimidator 305, Kings Dominion
2. Expedition GeForce, Holiday Park
3. El Toro, Six Flags Great Adventure
4. Goliath, Walibi Holland
5. Monster, Parc Walygator
6. Shambhala, Port Aventura
7. Piraten, Djurs Sommerland
8. X2, Six Flags Magic Mountain
9. Phoenix, Knoebels
10. Helix, Liseberg
11. Montu, Busch Gardens Tampa
12. Tatsu, Six Flags Magic Mountain
13. Talon, Dorney Park
14. Alpina Blitz, Nigloland
15. Troy, Toverland
16. Nemesis, Alton Towers
17. Balder, Liseberg
18. Black Mamba, Phantasialand
19. Manta, Sea World Orlando
20. Altair CCW-0204, Cinecitta World
21. Griffon, Busch Gardens Williamsburg
22. Storm Runner, Hershey Park
23. Bizarro, Six Flags New England
24. Colossos, Heide Park
25. Batman La Fuga, Parque Warner Madrid
26. Katun, Mirabilandia
27. Great Bear, Hershey Park
28. Skyrush, Hershey Park
29. Batman: The Ride, Six Flags Magic Mountain
30. Nitro, Six Flags Great Adventure

Altair is a significant improvement on Colossus in every way. The restraints are more comfortable and obviously allow for a lot more freedom being lap bars. The first drop is more exciting and generates a considerably faster pace for the entire coaster. The ride is pretty forceful, especially in the vertical loop and although it is a bit shaky towards the back of the train, it is fairly minor and doesn't cause any discomfort. The five heartline rolls are incredible. There not taken too slow that they create lots of hangtime, but still offer a brilliant sensation of freedom because of only being restrained by lap bars.

I have always liked Colossus, but have thought that it's full potential was never reached. Altair pretty much fufils this potential and is really an excellent coaster.

Shock was also very good, but sadly doesn't make the top 30 (maybe top 40?).

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

That's all? Sort of surprising Jerry. A lot of filler without quality I assume?

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

Pretty much. Just take a look at my last entry in the 'Rides you rode in the opening season' topic.
I did do a hell of a lot of parks this year (mostly in Europe), but other than the few in bold there wasn't anything outstanding that I haven't ridden before and you might notice that quite a few of them (including Goliath at Walibi Holland and GeForce) actually dropped down because they simply aren't what they used to be.

Is that because they got rougher, or because they just impress you less because you've ridden more coasters now?

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

Definitely not rougher, just not as good as I remember them being tbh. This year was my second trip to Walibi Holland and third to Holiday Park since 2009. I've ridden a lot more coasters since then, but very few that are better or would really influence my opinion. It's just that neither of them seem to be running the way they did five years ago. They still offer some great airtime, but not as intense as it used to be. Yet other coasters that I rode five years or even longer ago, still ride the same.

Sounds about right. I was hoping to ride a number of coasters in 2015, especially Toro and Dash, and I'm wondering if they will be the same. It's been almost 7 years since I've been on either, which feels weird to say but then I remember that I rode them with UC.. and it isn't so weird anymore. Ahh.. the good ol days. :p

When I hit up SFGAdv, I'll give you a holler J.

Re: Top 10(ish): 2014 Edition

Made a couple of changes in my list because I've decided to count the overall experience instead of just the coaster part. The changes are in bold.

1. Helix (Liseberg)
2. Black Mamba (Phantasialand)
3. Silver Star (Europa Park)
4. Expedition GeForce (Holiday Park)
5. Blue Fire (Europa Park)
6. Joris en de Draak (Efteling)
7. Goliath (Walibi Holland)
8. Troy (Toverland)
9. Twister (Gröna Lund)
10. Wodan (Europa Park)
11. Balder (Liseberg)
12. Colorado Adventure (Phantasialand)
13. Lisebergbanan (Liseberg)
14. Winjas Fear & Force (Phantasialand)
15. Vliegende Hollander (Efteling)
16. Jetline (Gröna Lund)
17. Eurosat (Europa Park)
18. Vogel Rok (Efteling)
19. Dwervelwind (Toverland)

20. Sky Scream (Holiday Park)
21. Xpress: Platform 13 (Walibi Holland)
22. Formule X (Drievliet)
23. Falcon (Duinrell)
24. Kanonen (Liseberg)
25. Pegasus (Europa Park)

Black Mamba is a fantastic coaster in pretty much every aspect. The queue-line/station, the theming, the dispatch <3, the landscaping around the ride and the coaster part itself. It's smooth, intense, well paced and just a wonderful coaster overall.

I've swapped Wodan with Balder as my #10. I find Balder slightly better coaster-wise because of the countless pops of airtime it provides, but Wodan is so much better in every way. The queue-line is among the most well themed ones I've seen so far. The entire area is very well done. The ride just has an epic atmosphere that Balder lacks. Wodan itself is pretty damn good as well, but it felt a bit short after a 50 minute wait, and I wish it did a bit more. It's more about the speed than the hills/twists like other GCIs I've ridden. Still a lot of fun and I wish I could've ridden it more than just twice.

Vliegende Hollander's coaster part is pretty meh, but everything else is great. The queue is fantastic, I've never seen a more gorgeous coaster station and the dark ride part is also of the same quality (if all the effects work properly). Purely based on theming it would be in my top 10. As an overall experience it places 15th.

Vogel Rok and Dwervelwind are both wonderful re-ridable family coasters. Both smooth (Dwervelwind is the smoothest coaster in the Netherlands), both great onboard music and both well themed. That's why I rank them higher than Sky Scream, which is better purely based on the coaster part.

Same story for Xpress, well themed so higher than Formule X, which is a slightly better coaster, but way too short as well.
