The shop opened today and looks quite nice. All photos from TPM's Facebook...

Seriously impressed with that shop! And it isn't ofter I compliment Thorpe or Merlin but have to say that really does look great. If the shop is anything to go by the theming in the actual ride should be stunning!

Derren Brown was on park today too.

Yeah, the shop looks great! I hope there's some interesting tat to buy, not just the usual stupidly shaped mugs and oversized pens.

How big a brand is Derren Brown outside of the UK? Will foreign visitors to Thorpe Park know who he is? I realise you don't have to know who DB is to enjoy the ride but I'm curious if he has international appeal.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

I don't think anyone outside of the UK will know who he is, but I'm hoping they won't need to? As long as you get the gist from his portrayal that he is a posh magiciany dude, that'll carry it with the overall aesthetic.

No idea how many non British visitors the park gets, mind you.

I am familiar with some British characters and Derren Brown is certainly not one of them, so I would assume it's not as relevant abroad as it is in the UK.

So long as the entire experience doesn't revolve around his character, I think all audiences should be able to follow the story if there's any.

At least one is/was! :D
I've never heard of him before I moved to the UK, but I doubt it won't change the experience that much if you do not know who he is. :)
In other news, day booked off for the 6th May!

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

I wonder if you can buy a ghost train in the ghost train shop? False advertising if you can't!

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

I really like the facade of this thing. Typically Merlin in styling but a far superior finish to their previous work, but why oh why did they leave the tin warehouse un-themed and in full view to the public. For me, things like that really detract from the overall feel.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Facade work is expensive. That's why.

A good enough reason...? Well maybe not, but Inferno's exit route offends me more and that's Tussaud's days.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Cost can only be so much of a reason though when they've already spent £30-35m on this (apparently). So it feels like a cop out reason to me. But then again, I can think of a better reason.

Oddly enough, Inferno's exit has never bothered in the slightest.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Sometimes I find it can be somewhat excused 'after' the ride experience is over, for example Inferno's. Most people spend the entire exit of Inferno chatting with their friends about their experience and not giving two **** about their surroundings.

Does DBGT need to have a 360 facade? I don't think so, at all.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

Well when almost 90% of the attraction is in full view to the public then maybe it should be disguised seeing as it's a completely different set up to Inferno. For one thing, Inferno's exit faces away from the GP so the only opportunity to see this is exiting the ride. With DBGT, you can see the entire ride and it's UGLY. The exposed warehouse really detracts from the ride I feel. It's not out of sight, it's in full view.

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

But you're not understanding what I mean? People riding the ride, will see it at face value, like, they'll head to the ride and get in the queue and that's where their experience starts, not from half way across the park and walking up to it.

A video showing the outside of the "station", the shop and the queue.

EDIT: Fixed the YouTube link for you

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train (WC16) | Thorpe Park | May 2

It looks like something that gets kicked off of FaceOff in episode 3 due to 'shoddy joints and moulding'. I think the concept is utterly fab but like most horror related costumes, they look **** in daylight - I am excited to see if it's all part of the experience or merely as a tactical PR stunt.
