What's new

The TV we watch...

Game of Thrones has got weird. Really can't see where it's going to go now, which is good I suppose (haven't read any of the books).

Just finished the new season of Orange Is the New Black - I was worried it would start to go downhill but it's still absolutely brilliant.

Also, I started Wayward Pines because people at work were banging on about it and I'm hooked. It's hard to describe without spoiling it so I'll keep my gob shut, but it's an intense mystery/thriller series. Really, really good.

I don't usually post in here (I'm not much of a TV watcher) but I wanted to mention Ascension. It's a show that hasn't had much press but that I thought was really good. So far there's only been a mini series and someone gave it to me to watch on a flight.

The premise is that in the 60s, a spacecraft was sent off as the 'last chance for mankind' populated by scientists and an underclass of workers. It's about the lives of these people and thier children who have grown up in this tiny world with no experience of the cultural revolutions of the last few decades. There's more to it than that. There are major (almost GOTs level) twists as the story concentrates on a murder that happens on the ship, and simultaneously, on the people back on earth who still know about the project. Really recommend this. It needs another series please.

Has anyone been watching Humans on channel 4?
It's a human-like robots with a conscience kind of premise, 'tis very good.

Jake I think Season 3 of OITNB is really disappointing. I'm four episodes in and there isn't even a main storyline to follow other than the loose plot of the prison potentially closing which they flirt around briefly each episode.

I've just started watching season 1 of True Detective as heard really good things about it. Two episodes in and I am intrigued. Apparently season 2 started out terribly but it appears to have everyone hooked again.

If you liked the funny stuff watch it on Amazon Prime with Clarkson, Hammond and May. If you liked the serious car reviews keep watching on BBC America. :)

I'm not sure how I feel either xD I already pay for Netflix and am not sure I want to pay for Amazon Prime as well. Having said that I haven't looked into Amazon Prime at all so have no idea what they offer as a potential alternative. We shall see. Would have gathered Netflix got it but at the end of the day I'd rather an online streaming company like either mentioned got it rather than **** ITV.

So I'm making the most out of having Netflix and I'm smashing through a few things recently;

24 - I Absolutely LOVE 24. I spent many a day off marathoning it for 12+ hours. A fantastic concept pulled off brilliantly! I managed to complete all 9 seasons in 2 months.

Friday Night Lights - Another TV show I've fallen in love with. The stories are fantastic, the acting immense; I'm just distraught it's finished. Also managed to visit the set to this whilst visiting Texas in June which was fab.

Breaking Bad - After watching 24 and FNL this brought me down to earth. It's good, yes, but not the all singing, all dancing spectacle that people make it out to be. There were some brilliant episodes, but also some really boring ones, and that's why BB will never be able to compete with the Soprano's or 24 in my opinion.

Community - Just kicked off watching this last week and I'm already halfway through season 3. I thinks it's a solid watch. There are some fantastic episodes out there (blanket fort, Paintball 1&2) but there are a few weird ones that leave me scratching my head.

^Community is so hit and miss it's crazy. When its good it is some of the funniest stuff out there. Unfortunately I think the last 3 seasons were very poor with some of the better moments coming out of the jokes made at the expense surrounding the issues regarding the making of the show.

Sense 8
Really weird, I think the concept is amazing but it takes way too long to get going and it's not until episode 4 or 5 that things really get going. There's also way too much porn in it, for a show that really needs to get the story moving it spends way too much time faffing with the sex scenes. Still, I think overall its a great show and I would love to see a second season.

Wet hot American summer: First day of summer

When the film was made in 2001 it was full of basically no-bodies, skip to now and most of the cast are pretty major stars within the comedy and film world and somehow they got everyone back together for a prequel series. The film is ok, defo has some stand out moments, the show though takes the concept (and the ridiculous notion of doing a prequel 14 years after the original when they were already too old to play the roles) and runs with it in a brilliant way. It's so good, I binged through all 8 episodes in one sitting and just had a big smile on my face at the end of it.

^^ I watched the first three series of 24, but not sure if I'll bother with any more. They've just been a bit same-same so far.

^ Community was great in the first series. Halfway through the second I ditched it and haven't gone back. There were far too many dud episodes and it started to think it was all a lot cleverer than it actually was.

I got round to finishing off Sons of Anarchy recently. Such a great show, but I found the final series a bit dull if I'm honest since it focussed purely on one event from the end of the 6th series. A major event admittedly, but it was a bit dragged out.

Watched a few episodes of Battle Creek. Meh. It's the kind of thing you can dip into since the episodes pretty much stand alone, so I'll probably watch more of it at some point without worrying about not being able to follow it after taking a break.

Atlantis. Again, watched a few episodes. May not bother with any more. Seems like a kids' show really.

I'm currently obsessed with Pretty Little Liars. I'm only near the end of the first series - there are five I think - but really getting into it at the moment. It's 100% mindless, teen trash, but it's not trying to be anything else and is entertaining enough.

So I've binned off Community because I'm fed up of all the 'strange' episodes. Don't think I'll go back either.

Just started watching the League and so far I'm loving it. I like a slightly crude comedy so this really hits the spot.

The League is great - definitely a good choice!

Shame about Community though. I think there's something of an in joke with the 'specials' to be honest. At first I was a bit confused by them, but in the end it was a bit more "ahh I get the reference". I think it's great, but each to their own.

The League is the best show out there. Along with Blue Mountain State for stupid crude comedies.

Yeah, Community is fantastic, Darren's just not cultured enough to get the nuanced and subtle references.

So basic.

I'm obsessed with Bojack Horseman at the moment, which is a Netflix made adult cartoon. It's a bit like Family Guy back when that show had an edge, but much darker and more honest. It's really funny, really dark and yet truthful. Love it, so good.

Bojack Horseman is brilliant, just finished season 1.
Also finished watching Peep Show on Netflix which was really good, although I prefer Mitchell and Webb's sketch comedy.

You see, I get all the references, and that annoys me. I like that they spoof of TV shows and Movies, but I wish they'd tone it back to just a few episodes. Then came the cartoon and puppet episodes which were **** awful! I loved it to start off with, but season 3 onwards reared more bad episodes than good.

Yeah, the cartoon and puppet episodes are rubbish.

I'm glad you've seen at least the amazing paintball episodes and the amazing blanket fort episodes. You're not the first person to say the quality dives off a cliff, but I still love it.

I've binged through Breaking Bad over the past couple of months, I can see why everyone bangs on about it, the 2nd half of season 5 was brilliant, and I'm happy with how it ended.
Slowly finishing off GoT, last 4 episodes of season 5 to go but I'm not loving this season so far, 4 was immense though.
Think next up will be catching up on the Walking Dead, missed at least a season I think.

I've polished off 'The League' in quick time and I'm in love it. It's also one of the only series' to date I've watched that hasn't yet ended, although the next series will be the final one. :(

I tried to watch Bojak Horseman but I couldn't get past the first episode; what a pile of complete and utter ****! The same for 'Archer' really, although it does have some funny moments. I guess I'm just not into adult themed cartoons.

Arrested Development was next on my 'to try' list, and although I could watch it easily enough, it just didn't grab me. I may give it another chance in the future, we'll see.

Then 'Daredevil' happened. WOW! How good is this series? I've smashed through it in 2 days. I absolutely love it, and it eclipses any superhero movie/series I've watched in the past (even the recent Batman franchise which I'm a big fan of). If anyone else on here has Netflix I'd highly recommend it.

Now I'm at a lose end I'm going to give 'Orange is the new black' a tryout. I've heard good things so we shall see...

Daredevil blew every expectation I had for it out of the water. Completely fantastic.

Orange is the new black gets annoying after a while, third season is ****.

Just finished up the seasons of Ballers and Brink on HBO, enjoyed both significantly.

Watching that yearly dumpster fire that is Big Brother. Wife loves it, I love mocking those people. Also still suffering through Under the Dome, here's hoping they finally just end it this season. It needs to stop.
