Shrek 4D/ Far Far Away for Alton Towers 2011

Apologies if this has already been put somewhere but I can't see anything and thought the topic would be pretty active. From TowersTimes:

These latest rumours suggest that the Ice Show Tent in Storybook Land will indeed be the location of the 4D cinema and the tent has already been emptied ready for work to begin once the park closes for winter. It is still not known if the tent will be removed and a more permanent building built in its place.

More interesting news that the source has told TowersTimes is a full re-theme of Old MacDonald's Farmyard and Storybook Land is on the cards. These two areas could be merged into one land called Far Far Away, one of the primary locations used in the Shrek franchise. If this re-theme takes place it is expect that all existing attractions will re-themed.

A re-theme of Storybook Land would also mean the beloved Bookworm who has stood in the same spot since 1996 would be removed and replaced by a character from Shrek, the character it could be replaced with is not yet known.
Our Source also revealed that The Beastie will be removed at the end of the season, and with the possibility of no replacement for the aging Pinfari Super Dragon.

Of course, these are all just rumours and plans could change before the opening of the 2011 season but with Dreamworks staff already being spotted backstage 2011 is shaping up to be bigger than just a 4D Cinema.

Screamscape has also had some rumours posted I believe, and when we were there for Scarefest we saw people working on the old Ice Show tent, to my guess they were dismantling it.

I want Alton to get a 4D show so much, but a Shrek one? Retheming lands to Far Far Away? I think the latter rumour sounds a bit farfetched, but it makes me feel sick just thinking about it.

Eugh.

I think it may actually potentially be really nice, the issue is using external contemporary material like this which ages quickly and pushes aside any quirky and unique values a park has, especially a part so quirky as Alton.

Not only that, Saw and Shrek are already outdated? Just weird. Merlin are behaving as though they need any funding they can find, when really they are a huge company that can do without, especially considering they still are in cases such as Thirteen, X-Raptor and Krake. So what's going on? What, other than being cheap, is the deal? Is there actually evidence that suggests Saw is doing better than it would have done without the Franchising link? :S

A kids area, however, is the place to use external brands if there ever was a place. I actually have fairly high hopes for how the area will turn out, but I am concerned none-the-less about the future of sponsored bull****.

Heard about this a while back.
If the themeing is done well it'll be an improvement on Old MacDonalds Farmyard. I only ever really go down there for the Berry Bish Bash.
Shame they can't get something new rather than a 4D show that's already years old and now Shrek has started to die out.
Will have to wait and see what they've got planned before I make judgement.

The Universal parks already have the Shrek 4D show; Universal Singapore even have the whole Far Far Away area. Surely Alton wouldn't be able to use it?

Anyway, **** ing 4D theatres. Why does every **** ing park see them as some kind of necessary attraction? They're **** ing **** ! On every one I've tried, without fail, I've left personally hating it and listening to 95% of the people coming out of there saying "that was crap" or "what a waste of time".

These things have had their day, especially these days when every other film in the cinema is in **** ing 3D. Why do you need a 3D film (with a bit of air and water: wow) at an amusement park when you can see a full-length feature any day of the **** ing week?

Let them die please.

When I 1st heard this I was so upset by it.

Alton getting a 5 year old show that has had its day, and its not even that great. Plus Shrek was just about finished after the 2nd film.

But there are loads of people that have not seen it so it might do ok, I just think its a bad idea them getting it.

It just seems now the Blackstone are getting more involved with Merlin, Blackstone are part owners of the Universal parks.

The idea sucks...

Simple as... Especially when it exists already in one of the most popular UK tourist destinations...

It is a good show but suitable for Alton? Meh... Just meh... It's old and the franchise is dead...

Why don't Merlin use fresh franchises rather than those that are dying or dead if they're gonna use them?

Indeed, it's like they don't jump on the bandwagon quickly enough. The last time they did so was Hocus Pocus Hall, which was clearly in response to the Harry Potter phenomenon. But instead of getting an ACTUAL attraction, they got a walkthrough. It's odd.

Anyway, that's me not bothering with Alton next year, which I'm sure they'll be gutted about. Fair enough that you can't expect huge new attractions every year, but I went a few times this year and am a bit "done" with the place for now.

The s**tness of adding a 4D theatre of any description at a park like Alton actually offends me.

Yeah this idea does suck. Not to mention the last film/ book tie in Alton did was Charlie and look how that turned out.

Plus I like Old Macdonalds farm, leave it alone! Also I don't see how they would they fit in the tractors, dungheap, eye spy, doodle derby and bish bash into a Shrek theme. The whole area would need a complete overhaul.

No no no no no. For all the reasons stated above, but mostly because the idea of Alton selling out to big franchises like Thorpe did with Saw makes me sad. No. Never. I'm all for a new retheme of those two areas but I am a firm believe that Merlin are creative enough to come up with something original rather than a tacky not-as-good copy of a land that already exists in another park. I go to Alton to be transported into the magic of Alton Towers and all of it's own amazing stories and ideas it has, not to see characters from films and TV. That is what Disney is for.

I love McDonalds Farm :( It's literally my favourtie part of the park. It just looks really, really good, and I always have fun there...

The idea of Shrek doesn't really bother me. Yes, it's about a decade late. Yes, the franchise died two films ago... But, somehow it still doesn't really bother me. It's better than Saw at least. At least it's aimed at kids, who are stupid and do still like the newer, more awful Shrek films.

But, they can't get rid of Beastie and NOT replace it with another cred :( That would break my heart in two.

Can't see this happening so late into the franchise's life. I suspect it is another publicity/deflective stunt.

You realise these are the people that just built a load of Saw attractions at one of their parks, right?

^Exactly, when we were on, what, the 5th film by then already? Plus, with regards to Shrek, the franchise already exists on a huge scale in a brand new park in Singapore.

Indeed, perhaps I could be wrong (make a note!). I still, however think it is not the brightest idea and it wouldn't surprise me if it was Morwenna Angove's swansong, ha ha.

I've not been on many 4D Cinema's, but the one's I've been on here (Drayton and Mingo) are awful compared to HISTA.

^Well... HISTA is terrible... So...

Yeah, 4D cinemas aren't awesome... Aside from Shrek and Muppets...

But one at Alton does not want...

I thought the effects were really good on HISTA (jumping floor, sneezing dog, snake, mice etc).. yet on Spongebob @ Mingo and Happy Feet @ Drayton, you just got wet and your seat rocked, like constantly... and that was it.
