Rides that look different to how they ride

Went to Liseberg the other day, and they're newly converted observation to drop tower is the most menacing looking machine. The car and catch car looks well oversized, very grungy and the indoor queueing and boarding area, complete with windows where you can look into the loading area, is also rather grim and intimidating.

...But, it might be the tamest drop tower I've been on.

There's quite a few rides out there that are made to look more scary than they are, or even dumbed down as is the case with say Dragon's Fury and Air, which look less intimidating than they ride I think.

What are your favourite examples?

Maurer sohne spinners in general are pretty scary compared to how tame they look. Bigger rides that are tamer than they look, nemesis inferno, colossus, saw and especially slammer. Gosh, slammer gets such a bad press about being painful and scary, but I found it incredibly tame.

I always thought that air powered launch towers were increadibly intimidating, yet relatively dull to ride.

^Agreed. S&S Towers are just.. meh.. even though they look insanely epic.

Umm.. first thing that comes to mind is Shivering Timbers. Looks like airtime heaven.. but..

I'd have to say that Venom (drop tower) at WMSP looks pretty tame, I mean, its like what, 60ft, yet it packs one HELL of a punch, its a lot more intense than Det and Apocalypse, it put the **** up me every time. It genuinly feels like its launched back down to earth.

Reverchon Crazy Mouses look pretty dull and boring, yet when you weight the cars just right, the second half is insanely fun and the carnies have a hard time stopping you from spinning.

I also though pony express was going to be dull, and I was only riding it for the cred, but after the first couple of hills, the ride became a lot more fun to ride on, especially the last turn which was quite fun to ride through the tunnel.

Deja Vu looks pretty intimidating with the vertical lifts, but once you get past the painful restraints, it's just a dull ride. Same thing for X2.

Maelstrom at Drayton Manor (I guess you could say the same for all swinging rides) looks pretty nauseating and scary at it's maximum angle, but the ride experience is anything but. The floating sensations are amazing.

PRIME example is Extremis (Drop Tower, NOT "coaster") at The Dungeons (Edinburgh, London, Hamburg & Blackpool).

It's TINY. Literally like 5/6 metres (15-20ft), Yet, it's one of the best drop towers I've been on!

Yeah, I think Extremis embodies the theme of this topic. I had no idea about the power of that ride until I experienced it. It really packs a punch.

Other thoughts...Booster bikes. They look so much fun, but are in fact, the most pointless rides of all time

I agree with all S&S/Huss towers, why buy one of these when you can buy an Intamin/Fabbri?

Whirlwind at Camelot looks very tame even by Maurer spinner standards but is in fact incredibly intense and brutal. Again at Camelot, my friend asked me what good rides were there and I showed him a POV of Knightmare, and watching a POV I can understand how it looks like an amazingly tame family coaster when it is really one of the most intense in Britain!

Grand National and Wild Mouse at Blackpool both seem a lot more intense than they look, whereas PMBO has almost no intensity or sensation of anything, despite being amazingly intimidating. Same with Knott's Silver Bullet.

This thing:

Thanks Joey... Durrrrr :p

It looks like a spin and spew, but it's a silly little airtime machine thing. It's really odd, but really good fun and not sick-inducing as it would appear.

The first thing that comes to my mind is Dueling Dragons. (Dragon Challenge or whatever it's called now.) Off-ride, it looks really cool with the near-misses but when you're actually on the ride it's a 'blink and you'll miss it' effect. It actually looks pretty intense, especially the fire side which appears to snap through some of the inversions but I found both sides to be rather mediocre and the majority of the layout which you can't see is just twists back to the station.

Griffon looks really tall and intimidating but I found it to be rather tame actually, particularly in comparison to Oblivion's drop. The splashdown effect is a really cool effect for by-standers but when you're on the ride you hardly even notice it. It's certainly not a bad ride but for a ride which looks to be terrifying, it actually provides more of a 'fun' ride instead.

Dunno if I agree or not. I do with Dueling Dragon's, but I think Griffon looks as tame as it is. It is beautiful though and it's drop is well presented, but to me it looks like a delicate floaty Air-esque experience. And it is.

Millennium Force. Looks amazing, but offers nothing but speed. Terminator looked cool, had almost a classic look to it, but was nothing more than a waste of space in my opinion.

On the other side of the spectrum I would say Prowler. What looks like a twisted terrain out and back and meh, turned out to be one of my favorites.

I disagree about X2, I find it to be one of the most enjoyable coasters I have ever been on, and to this day I have never found it painful. Also Pony Express. Worthless. Piece. Of. ****.

Classic example: Wild Mouse at Blackpool. It's tiny and wedged in on all sides which makes it look even less intimidating, but it's probably the best coaster in the park. We've got a school trip going there at the end of the week, and a lot of people I've been talking to have never bothered riding it because it looks like something "for kiddies".

Atlantis Adventure: The best "small" coaster I've ridden I think. From off-ride, while it looks impressive due to theming, it doesn't look intense or intimidating at all. Actually, you'd never even know it was launched, which is the first surprise (it's a really intense launch as well), but then the rest of the layout is really fast with decent airtime in places, especially towards the end of the day.

La Ronde's Corkscrew, so smooth and it doesn't look it at all. Bit similar to Millenium Coaster at Fantasy Island I suppose.

Mean Streak I thought looked awesome, fell for that one big time.

Xcelerator too I suppose, was not expecting that much airtime at the top of that top hat, especially after riding Stealth.

Gemini looked tame - NOPE
Wicked Twister looked tame - NOPE
Iron Dragon was better than it looked.
CP's corker was pretty decent
La Ronde's corker was very smooth.
Raptor looked insane but like all other B&m Inverts, was tame.
Milf, aside from the G-forces, was tame
Maverick looked alot tamer than it really was... oh my god.
Blue Streak looked tame... haha NO
Disaster Transport really caught me by suprise.
Magnum looked smooth... nope.
