New Spinning Cred for GYPB

Given that the 2 UK Fabbri Spinners have different colour covers for the cars, it's probably safe to say that this one has come from mainland Europe.

Sommerland Syd used to have a Fabbri Spinner named Family Star, so it would make sense if that one has one to GYPB.

From the parks FB page:

"An amazing new spinning rollercoaster named ‘Family Star’ is set to open at the Pleasure Beach in time for the start of the new season.

The visually spectacular ride sends thrill-seekers along a winding track, just like a regular coaster, ...with the difference being that the car the riders sit in spins crazily at it makes its way along.

Construction of the ride is currently in full swing, with the maintenance team working all-hours available to complete the build-up & a large crane has been on-site assisting since last week.

The Pleasure Beach is set to open its gates again on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th March it will also be open daily throughout the Easter Holidays, Thursday 28th March – Sunday 14th April."

What an awful name. They could have renamed it. Still, at least they're getting something half-decent this year.

I always thought that Log Flume had so much potential. I don't know how good the ride experience itself was but in terms of theming it could have been awesome. From observation it looks like the manufacturer had originally intended for the steel exo skeleton that supports the lifthill and drop to be used as some kind of structure. Sadly it seems GYPB missed an opportunity and left it bare and empty.

Shame.

The Log Flume was built in 1989 - four years before GYPB bought the freehold to the site. The local council gave permission to have the ride constructed in the old boating lake but didn't give permission to have the cladding installed; something about blocking the view of the sea from the promenade. There are a few other examples of this ride on the continent, all of which have theming. For example Træstammerne at Farup Sommerland.

Looks like Twister will be down the far end this year. They might have to juggle the rides around a bit down that end to fit it in.

^ That puzzles me.

Apparently they're going to be clearing that bottom end of the park to make way for the construction work which will start in October 2013 - so why make life harded buy sticking one of the popular rides down in that area, which is already crowded?

Not that much more work; you can dissemble Twister and fold it up in a day. I can't see where else it would fit. Down the bottom end you can simply move the Go Karts around to the right and put Twister up against the back wall next to Waltzer or more likely, shuffle the Go Karts back behind the Monorail supports and have the Twister right at the end of the park - at least that way everyone can see it walking past the Scenic.

Last day of 2013 season is 3rd November. Within two weeks you can have that whole bottom end cleared of rides and have dismantled that part of the Monorail. There's an old workshop down there too which will need taking down. Then will be the time to rearrange the rides they decide to keep I think.

They're also tarting up the Haunted Hotel:

That looks pretty good so far, IMO!

And they're also saying that they've being working on the interior of the snails dark ride.

This is like the first time in my life that GYPB are actually investing in their rides!

That looks really smart actually, I like it :)

Glad to hear it's getting a lot of TLC. I didn't mind the park for what it was, but it needed a little bringing up to date :)

Well at the minute it's just a dumpy fair ground really, with a couple of dark rides and an old coaster. Yet they're building this upmarket complex right next to it, so they need to do something to the place to make it look a bit more desireable.

Besides, the Haunted Hotel may finally look like a hotel now!

New cred (plus missing out on the Hemsby cred) and my secret love of PWH and the investment they are putting in makes me very tempted to head back to the area again for a day or so.

The only time I've bothered with the Pleasure Beach I just whored Rollercoaster all day, nabbed the big apple cred and tried some of the rather dull flats. It's been in desperate need of something 'new' and some TLC.

Haunted does look much better. I imagine they have done the inside too - it was scarier in there with the lights on that with them off. I'd be interested to see what they have done to the Snails - there's rather a lot more to theme on that ride. It's been about 10 years since they were both last done.

Investment is hard to quantify in ways other than monetarily though. They invested in a new chain for the Scenic which I imagine cost rather more than the Haunted refurb but it's harder for people to appreciate a 400ft long piece of greasy steel I suppose.

Comparing the 00's to the 90's though, the number of rides are similar but the value of the investment seems to have been rather less (Terminator bought in 1995 for around £1m; Sky Plop, Disko and Evo in 2004-06 for probably less than that combined). No doubt this due to the fact so much money and time has been spent dealing with the council and consultants, etc for The Edge stuff.

Hopefully this is just the start of a park wide refurb.
