New Merlin Annual Pass for 2012

We're not talking about them getting rid of the Premium Pass though...

So it has nothing to do with getting rid of free parking, just this free fasttrack ****.

I don't mind... I'm a lazy enthusiast. If it means I can cut lines and so on, I'm game. Plus 2 free tickets I could make a couple quid on as well. Sorted!

I don't see a problem with this, and Erol brings up a valid "for" argument.

We're (mostly) lower income bracket people on this site (either students, living with parents or single income), where we enjoy theme parks, but it's a hobby that we cover as an extraneous expense.

There are people out there who see £300 a year for these things as absolutely nothing. For some people it's a cultural thing too "we're special".

I doubt if enough of these will ever be sold to really make a huge impact on things like queue lines. It's just another opportunity for Merlin to make money out of people who have a lot of it weighing down their bank accounts. Hell, I'll bet most of them can even find a way of making it a tax deductible expense

It's not really any different to the fast pass ideal of "if you've got the cash..."

Really doesn't bother me at all.

^ I disagree with your logic.

Firstly, I can't imagine many people with hefty incomes wanting to go to the Merlin theme parks.

Secondly, they won't be fussed about getting a pass, they'd turn up, pay gate price and buy fast passes.

Because, even people who don't hate great incomes do that.

That's because you don't have a hefty income and a desire to go to your local theme park a lot ;)

There's a point where you can afford "premium" but still don't want to waste money. So there will absolutely be people (like Erol's family) who enjoy the local Merlin parks many times a year and have the cash to buy (and desire) the top tier pass. I'll bet most of them own Apple products too ;)

If I wasn't encumbered with debt, I'd probably fall into that category too. Fortunately, due to my abject lack of ready cash, I possess more sense than money

I think its a great idea, it gives people another option and extra privileges if they want them.

I won't be buying one because I don't visit the parks often enough anymore to even warrant buying a standard pass but I don't see why this has been met with so much negativity, they aren't forcing anyone to buy one its just another option thats there if you want it.

Once it's brought in (if it is), you're unlikely to see it disappear, only superseded in some way - that's what I'm getting at.

Except your point is wrong...

If this doesn't make buisness sense when it's implemented, they will easily take it away. It's not something that OMG WILL DEFO STAY just because the Premium Pass is there.

The Premium pass staying is evidence to support that once something is introduced, it's unlikely to be removed - only superseded in some way.

The only cost of this is going to be a new design of card and few modifications to the computer system. Even if there are only 500 holders, there'd be no cost associated with keeping it going so why would they get rid once implemented?

The premium pass makes sense though this does not.

Say 4 of us goto a theme park and only one has the new pass, will that one person really use the fast pass thing by themselves? It will only work if you go to the park with people that have this pass or you won't use the extra features.

^Maybe they're hoping that people will be stupid enough to cough up the extra to 'match' the free fast tracks that the pass holder would have? I know most people wouldn't do that, but think of the demographic that Thorpe attracts. Teenagers want things as quick as possible, and most of them, although unsupervised by a parent in the parks, will be paying with their parents money, so they don't really care what it gets spent on.

This will be aimed at the ultra-obsessives that visit several times per week, I would have thought. They'll have looked on their systems and realised that there are a few hundred or so such people and thought there's a way to get even more out of them now.

^But WHY? If you visit three times a week, then ride count isn't going to be a big priority, so what's the point in having the fastrack? There isn't one, and it's the only real perk of note.

^Maybe it's the theme park equivalent of people queuing up for hours to get the latest iPhone, when they've already spent a **** load on the one they have that's about a year old.

The Fastrack perk will allow you to queue for a very short amount of time (if anything) without charging you extra, and without you having to ride at a certain time. This means that you can get a lot more out of your trip, making it in general more enjoyable.

But this doesn't make it worth £309...

^Whilst you agree that its a waste of money, I think you slightly missed my point. The people who go often enough to justify this pass don't need the fastrack as all they do with their free time is attend the parks. Ride count isn't important for them. If it was, they'd actually go and visit some new parks instead. At the end of the day, they like being in the park. They're not going to care for being able to get an extra ride on Nemesis or Stealth each day as they'll have ridden them hundreds of times.

If there are 200,000 passholders according to Varney, can we assume 500 of those will go for this? Not sure, but that'd still be an extra £75,000 or so they've made for nothing really. Would it maybe make the standard pass appear as better value, is that their plan?
