Kings Dominion 40th Anniversary 2014 Announcement

Mega Poster
"Kings Dominion turns back the clock as the park announces plans for a celebration four decades in the making. This once in a lifetime event will include many surprises, the return of classic park icons and a chance to create new traditions and memories with your family. The celebration will begin next season to commemorate Kings Dominion’s grand opening in 1975.

“As a native Richmond resident, I grew up not only visiting Kings Dominion, but also started my career here as a seasonal associate,” said Pat Jones, Kings Dominion’s Vice President and General Manager. “I have 40 years of fond memories and I am thrilled to share some of these exciting moments with our guests during our special 40th Celebration.”

The central piece of the 40th Celebration will be the introduction of “Ruby”, a custom painted 40th Celebration horse. “Ruby” will be added to the park’s historic Carousel, which dates back to 1917. The Carousel has operated at Kings Dominion since the park opened in 1975.

Those who grew up with Kings Dominion will also notice the return of many original park icons next season, including:

-The homecoming of the park’s classic blue ice cream, which was a hit with families for decades.

-A complete restoration of the iconic International Street fountain, which will include a new LED lighting package and additional refurbishments.

-Reintroduction of one of the park’s original classic midways, Candy Apple Grove. This re-themed area will include new ride lighting packages, return of the classic over-sized candy apples along the midway and other surprises.

-The return of Safari Village (formerly the Congo area of the park) and will include exciting improvements to Volcano: The Blast Coaster and one of the park’s older roller coasters, Anaconda.

In the coming months, Kings Dominion will also make many more exciting announcements as part of this thrilling celebration." -Kings Dominion website

I was sad to Hear about the anaconda getting improved. I wanted it to be removed and replaced. Guess that means It'll be sticking around. If they're gonna improve it, then hopefully they will make it smoother!

As for volcano, I think we might see that double loading platform added, but what else could be added? Fire every time?

The fountain upgrade sounds cool. It will be like the one at Canada's Wonderland.

Yay. Blue ice cream. Woo hoo. :|

New midway and the grove re-theming? cool! sounds like something nice. Safari village sounds interesting. I wonder if we'll be seeing some animals, as the park did once have a drive through safari. It would be probably temporary though. Is all this stuff going to be staying, or temporary? like is the grove forever now safari village? anyone know that answer?

If they're going to be announcing new more "exciting stuff" for 2014, then hopefully they'll bring back the skyride. Please. It never should have left. You could put one entrance in between Windseeker and Hurler, and the other by Volcano and Flight of Fear. The return of Apple Turnover would also be nice. Diamond falls would be nice too, but somehow I don't see that happening. I expect those things that they haven't announced yet will probably be small. Idk, What are your guys's thoughts on this? Hopefully we'll still see that new coaster for 2015. But thats another topic for another day. :)

-Loved the blue ice cream. Vanilla soft serve is my favorite cone anyway.

-The fountain was always awesome, be great to see that comeback.

-I wonder what improvements they'll do to Anaconda? Paint maybe?

-I'm with you on the Apple Turnover and the Sky Ride. Loved both of those.

I don't think anything "big" like a water ride or coaster will be added. KD's big thing this year is the fountain upgrade, and the refreshment of the rest of the park is probably gonna take up what they have left in terms of spending money for the off season.

^When was this? (not trying to be rude, I seriously have never heard of them doing anything outside woodies and Iron Horse)

It was when Silverwood bought Deja Vu from Six Flags Great America. RMC has plenty of pictures on their site here.

So were they just involved in transport and reconstruction? Or did they actually make alterations to the ride?

The 40th anniversary event will stretch into 2015, too. Unsure what that will mean but I'm happy that i get to see the new logo for more than one season.

So the park opened in 1975... That would mean they would turn 40 in 2015, not next year. Confused. Unless there is a typo somewhere?

While it opened in 1975, they count it by seasons, when you count that year, so it makes it 2015. so 75 to 14 is 40 years(Or seasons)

Definably getting a new coaster 2015. 3 Years in a row is family rides. We al know that this park and Carowinds will be getting a new one 2015. I vote wing coaster here, launched at carowinds.

The park opened as a safari in 1974, and previewed Hanna Barbera land in the fall that year (it's now Planet Snoopy). The entire park opened to the public in 1975, so it's right on them to celebrate the 40th both years.

Kings Dominion has been doing the 12 days of christmas on their facebook page and on each day has releasing something about whats coming so far. The link is below. So far, the new stuff we've learned that the clown band is returning along with the floral clock. They will have a 40th anniversary merchandise store, a refreshed pizza parlor, and signs posted around the eiffel tower that talk about the parks past. Still 4 more days to go! https://www.facebook.com/kingsdominionva
