I was looking through some members posts who haven't been around in a while (in this case it was Ed) and I stumbled across this topic ;

http://www.coasterforce.com/forums/view ... p?p=161425

It made me realise how far Broadband has come in the space of three years so with technology advancing so fast I guess its time to get an updated perspective on peoples download speeds to hammer the CF servers!

Virgin Media's Medium offering - you'll know what that is Pierre ;)

Im ment to be on Virgin's 10 meg system tho its running like its only a 6 meg.

I'm on Verizon FiOS & just upgraded from 10 to 25 meg. The upgrade actually lowered my monthly fees. :--D

I have 4meg at work here and about 6 meg at home, crap compared to the UK and US but its actually the standard here in Dublin. Outisde the cities the network is still pretty bad.

10 mbit in each direction, but I have had 100 down/10 up at one apartment I have lived in.

It sucks, I was totally going to get ADSL2 (So 20mb) but at our new house we're on a sub exchange, so we're stuck with 1.5mb (Had 512kb before)
The situation is really quite crap here, we're stuck paying $60 (30 GBP) a month for it !

Its not all dire though, the govt has just announced they are rolling out a 100mb+ FTTH network, so things will be pretty good when that happens.

The UK is a crap country so not many will get the high-end stuff unless they are within a mile of the exchange.

Im in the "low-end" option. Living 3 miles from the exchange it never will go beyond 4mb no matter what.

lol at virgins false advertising.

I get a terrible connection at home. I'm about 5 miles from the nearest exchange, so at maximum get about 3Mb and currently it's impossible to go any higher than that. We're supposed to be on a 10Mb+ connection, but there is no way in hell we're gonna get that speed any time soon.

If you want to know exactly what your download/upload speed is, use this site:

http://www.speedtest.net/

I'm downloading at 3.08Mb/s and uploading at 0.37Mb/s, which is one of the best results i've ever seen from this PC.

I'm on 20mb paying £20 a month for it.

On speedtest.net I tend to average 15mb download speeds and 650-700kb/s upload.

At the moment I have Virgin Media's 20MG package, which I've had since it became available here.

But now the Virgin have made it so that the 50MG broadband is available in my area, we are seriously considering upgrading the 20 to a 50.

We've looked at getting the 50 a lot recently, especially last night when we got as far as working out how much it would cost a month to have that and all the other Virgin packages at XL.
So the call to them to come and fit it is probably going to happen very soon.

Thanks for bringing this topic, Pierre, I don't keep track of my internet speed at all.

So I ran the speed test that Peter posted and was horrified at the results compared to others.

I then went to my ISP online to check my bill and was shocked to see I'm paying nearly £18 for a 2MB connection. However low that seems by today's standards, it's done me well. I don't use the internet at home for much else than CF, emails and eBay anyway.

However, a little extra speed wouldn't hurt so I've upgraded to 8MB with the same ISP for just £12 a month, so £6 saved!

Pisses me off that the cheeky ****s have been ripping me off for a while! Hey ho, you live you learn. But this time I can do it a bit faster.

Speaking of which, if any of you are with Virgin Media... heres the current packages they're offering to 'new customers' and the prices.

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websale ... ce.do?id=2

If you're paying more for less on any of those then you can do something about it.
I was on 2mb (£18) with a M phone line of £11 total was £29.

I wanted that £20 offer of 20mb + M phone line... I phoned and got the usual new customer nonsense, but they actually have a website which states their offers are for all customers.

http://www.virginmedia.com/wehearyou/OffersForAll.html

I emailed them after unsuccessful phone calls, and switched to the £20 deal (didn't get half price for first 3 months but then I wasn't expecting that).

They have reworded it slightly it used to say plain as day "all of our offers are available to existing customers as well as new customers" now they're being pretty vague but its still worth a bash to save some money!

I'm with ridiculous in theory, but, as it's in halls as more people use it, it slows down (I didn't think it still worked like that, but, apparently I'm wrong).

So, a bit of all really! Sometimes it'll take a day or two to load a page, other times I've downloaded stuff off iPlayer in about 10 seconds.

*shrug*

Officially, I'm on a 2Mbps connection from Nildram. However, Nildram are owned by Tiscali who really don't give a **** about how many people they pack onto their oversubscribed network so my family is paying a small fortune for a connection that is completely and utterly ****e.

On the other hand, the connection works acceptably most of the time, and I'm not the one paying for it. I've already made my thoughts known on the quality of the connection, and stated several times which ISP I'd prefer to migrate to, but if my family can't be bothered changing despite the fact that they're being ripped off then that's their choice.
