Great Nor'easter to get a major overhaul in 2017

Really glad Vekoma is cited as having an extensive resume that features Junior coasters.

I think it's more about Morey's wanting to have their name in the press alongside Disney and Universal, as if they're somehow equal because they're using the same manufacturer.

It's quite clever really, if completely disingenuous.

If only they'd just build that GCI on the former Hunt's Pier they've been saying they'd do for ages...

September 5th is the last day to ride the Great Nor'Easter as it stands today, as exciting things are coming for the 2017 season.

They just (read: 4 hours ago) released a video on Facebook about it.

Glad I got the credit this year tbh. Even though it was quite jerky the location was neat and the restraints helped a little. Seeing as this mefiocre ride is their star attraction they should definitely do something to make it better

^It's really the only thing they're good at tbh. :p

I thought Batwing and Goliath were pretty good. Anyway, can't wait to find out the new name. Nice approach letting people vote on it like Busch Gardens Williamsburg did with InvadR. I think more parks should do that.

Could we see them using their new form of track for this instead of the old SLC type?

That would make sense if they were to re-track the entire thing. I mean, they have set up a manufacturing line for the new type of track, and presumably phased out the old. As long as there are no strict specifications for the track (say, if the park decided to keep the trains, or some supports wouldn't work for the new type or what have you) it would make little sense to dig up the old, inferior track.

If they do use the new track and new trains, I'll be very intrigued to see the result. SLCs have good layouts, but have been executed poorly in the past due to technical restrictions. I'd love to see "new" Vekoma take a spin on their old layout, with the new innovations in track manufacturing, CAD designing, trains and such. Letting us experience the SLCs the way they were meant to be back then.

If they're going to make an SLC good, that's the one to do it to. I think it's the best of them, the location is insanely cool with the ocean and slides nearby and the Vekoma trains it has are the best ones I've seen on an SLC. Take all the rattling out of the equation and you might actually have a really fun ride. But right now it's offensive. I feel personally offended by it.

Maybe while they're at it they can paint it some color that isn't whiter than your typical Holiday World guest and get rid of the stupid wanding policy for loose articles.

NewsPlusNotes posted a new article talking about the project:

Morey's Piers, located in Wildwood, New Jersey, has started the process of totally renovating the park's Great Nor'Easter roller coaster in time for the 2017 season.

The plan was actually announced way back at the start of the year, but the park has stayed mostly quiet about the changes until recently. The park will be replacing 90% of the Great Nor'Easter's track, using new track fabricated through Vekoma in the same layout that will provide a smoother ride. Many riders have commented on the coaster's rough ride experience, but Morey's appears to still see value in the attraction - they're spending around $4 million for the replacement!

Along with the new track the park is expected to give the coaster a brand new name, paint scheme and overall look. New trains were added to the ride several years ago, so I'm not sure if a brand new set will debut in 2017 or the old ones will still be used.

The Great Nor'Easter opened in 1995 and is one of the earliest installations of Vekoma's Suspended Looping Coaster model.

So it's pretty much saying that it will use the new track type. I'm interested to see how this project will turn out.

No, it's saying it's using 'new track', not 'the new track'. It's literally saying that 90% of the track is being removed for newer track, not stating that it's going to be the new style of track ;)

Is it, though? They say they will replace 90 % of the track, which, if I'm not mistaken, uses the old track type with the wheels on the inside. Unless they plan to have 10 % of the track not fitting the trains, they need to keep using the same track type.

^They're the same trains as are on Great Nor'Easter already...

And it rides like a bag of balls.

I'd have thought for that sort of money (or a bit more) a completely new coaster would be more worthwhile... even something gimmicky to pull in the crowds.

It'll be interesting to see what it looks like I guess.
