I'm going to split the down the middle on this.

It's acceptable if the kids really want to do it.

It's not acceptable if the parents are placing pressure on the kids to do it.

I really don't see how you can come to any other conclusion, honestly. I think too many people view something like this, get a distaste for it, and automatically blame the parenting without actually taking the time to consider the kid's feelings on the subject.

I personally wouldn't want to be a part of it, but if I had a daughter who really wanted to participate, who the hell am I to say no?

I'm with UC here, but I don't think the costumes are that bad because they go swimming in similar stuff any way.

They. Are. Amazing!

The only reason I would ever want a kid is so that I could call it Jon-Benet, dress it up like a crack whore and parade it around in one of these pageants.

Sod the research paper, I'm just going to submit that and see what happens

Like UC said, if the girls are being pressured into it then it's wrong, but also I know there are lots of little boys who get pressured into joining football teams by their dads, and if the issue here is pushy parents then I don't see how that is any different, and yet that never gets brought up.

I brought it up [/moo face]

I just couldn't follow through with the argument because it doesn't hold water in reality. Encourage girls to play dress up, yes, but have them competing? No...

So boys can compete but girls can't =p (I know that's not what you meant, I just wanted to be annoying haha)

I was having this argument with Sam earlier. It seems that just because it's a competition of something superficial like beauty it's looked down upon, whereas competitions celebrating sporting talent or intelligence are encouraged. Let the beautiful people have their fun, they'll probably never come top of a maths test or win a science fair (not saying all of them, but definitely some of them) so let them enjoy compete using their assets, they obviously seem to enjoy it =]
