Cedar Point | Gemini Midway Update | Disco & Flying Scooters

Mega Poster
It's coming around to that time of year again when most parks are preparing to announce their plans for the following season. We know King's Island is getting a record-breaking coaster in 2014, so that leaves speculation for what Cedar Point will be getting in 2014. It would be almost certain to rule out a coaster, but who knows. It is still possible. Besides a coaster, I was thinking it could either be a new flat/or a family ride, or maybe an Iron Horse treatment for Mean Streak (Which would be AWESOME). What do you guys think CP will be receiving next year?

They are getting something, CP's blog has a post that has to do with a contest which will give a family the privilege to introduce their 2014 plans.

EDIT: Based on the blog, it says that the winning family/families will need to be available for filming between Aug 12-21, so we could expect the announcement anytime after that, but most likely at the very end of August, or beginning of September

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

I remember something about Ouimet being really headstrong about a dark ride, and Cedar Point amazingly doesn't have one.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

^Oooo, I'd be very intrigued to see Cedar Point get a dark ride. If they do go down that route I wonder what they'd go for? Probably a shooter? Would be ideal for the family market and re-ride-ability.

However... The blog also says it's to announce "stuff", could this mean an area re-theme rather than brand new attraction(s)? Maybe both?

Who knows, but it's Cedar Point so let's see how many pages of random guesses we'll get before September :p

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

I'm definably betting on a dark ride. Where though? Probably in between raptor and millennium force. Anid if they indeed are adding more than that, i would like to see another awesome flat ride like a Huss Top Spin.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

^They already got a building large enough to house one, and its only uses right now are as an Arcade and as an event ballroom.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

If they do go the darkride route, I would imagine it would be a shooter similar to Toy Story Midway Mania but without the Toy Story theme. It would be just like you're moving down a midway/boardwalk playing games.

Only other one that would make sense for that building would be a haunted house/hotel and I don't see Cedar Fair doing that. But then again, they do have Boo Blasters on Boo Hill at their other parks. Maybe Cedar Point gets one now?

Those were built during the Paramount days and were rethemed from Scooby Doo, made and rethemed both by Sally Corp.

I knew that, I rode Scooby Doo and the Haunted Castle on its opening day when I was very young. I'm just saying Cedar Fair might build one from the ground up because they would already be licensed to use all the theming on them.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

Cedar Point has seen its fair share of dark rides in the past.

My favorite growing up was the Pirate Ride, who's building is now used as storage. Cedar Point actually pulled the designs for the themed ship, and rebuilt the ship for the pirate-themed walk through that runs underneath Maverick during Halloweekends.

The large Snoopy Boutique gift shop was also previously home to the San Francisco Earthquake Ride, until it was transformed to an indoor portion of Berenstain Bear Country.

My personal dream? Bring back the pirate ride as a dark shooter with marginal theming. Nothing over-the-top (let us not forget the original theme of DT compared to later), but a fun family ride with air conditioning.

What will Cedar Point probably get for 2014? More trash cans.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

I bet next year's addition is something along the lines of place making. Giving an older part of the park *cough*Gemini area*cough* or *cough*Blue Streak area*cough* look nicer. If I were Matt Ouimett, the areas I would concentrate on are the southeastern quarter of the park (Blue Streak, marina entrance, two of the park's three car rides right next to each other) and the Gemini area.

I can't help but think the park needs a good drop tower. They're one of the scariest types of ride and all theirs is is half of an S&S multi tower that isn't even that tall compared to some of the ones starting to go up. I'm sorry, but that part of Power Tower being all they have for a drop tower doesn't seem like enough for the world's best amusement park. A larger one like Falcon's Fury would be nice in Gemini's little dead corner.

I don't know, that's a pretty historic building. I very much doubt they would gut it for a dark ride.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

Whatever it is it most likely will cater to families. I'd like to see a Half-pipe coaster added to the old Chaos location. Great for the families and would really reflect well on Wicked Twister.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

Do not hold your breaths on large thrill rides guys.

Take a look at the timeline:

2013 - GateKeeper
2010 - Shoot the Rapids
2007 - Maverick
2006 - Skyhawk
2005 - maXair
2003 - TTD
2002 - Wicked Twister
2000 - Millennium Force

That's an average of 1.9 years between major thrill rides, and 2.5 years between roller coaster additions.

Whatever is coming next year, chances are it will not be something big.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

^Don't forget about Windseeker in 2011

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

Given that Windseeker has been closed more often than opened - do we really need to include it?

Including Windseeker, average large thrill ride interval is 1.6 years.

Nothing major is coming next year.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

There won't be anything new next year. Maybe expect to see some minor sprucing ups here and there, but nothing serious.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

I'd like to see something big added for the water park. Schlitterbahn is something to look at for inspiration, such as their "master blaster" engineered rides. Combine the experience of a steel coaster you get on the other side of the island, with the inflatable tube rides we're accustomed to on the water park side. I say take a big chunk out of the always mostly empty parking lot, and build the worlds tallest, longest, fastest, wettest jet propelled water tube ride! Ups, downs, turns, twists, plunges, etc! Combo full pipe/half pipe, riders sit in a 1-3 person inflatable raft, and starting at the top drop down and are pushed thru the tubes with jets of water controlling their speed thru the tube. I know this would be a huge investment, but the water park needs one BIG thing that Cedar Point can tout as a record breaking water park ride

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?

^ Soak City has relatively zero competition in the area, which is why it sees investments few and far between.

Last year they removed the very rough speed slides for the Dragster H2O Mat Racers. And I believe in 2010 they added the water fortress.

I too would love to see a master blaster or Pro Slide bowl, but have come to temper my hopes for Soak City. FWIW, Cedar Point already technically owns a master blaster at Castaway Bay - though Kalahari's water coaster trumps.

Cedar Fair announced the addition of a dark ride that will "create a new standard for the industry" to go at one of their parks for next year. Cedar Point is a good top candidate.

Re: Cedar Point 2014 New Attraction?/Coaster?/Refurb?
