Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 8 Up! (Sea World and San Diego)

DAY 1 & 2- Flight and Hollywood

So on the fifteenth I quickly finished my final exam of first semester and headed off to the airport. Even though I was worried about the border being busy on a Saturday, there were barely any cars there. Stupidly, my stepdad missed the turnoff to the airport but we still got there with plenty of time to spare! So, as per tradition each time I go to the airport, I ate one of my favourite things ever!

Buffalo chicken and cheese grilled sub from Charley's <3

Ethan has been wanting to try a Dorito Loco Taco from Taco Bell since forever ago, and since there was a Taco Bell at the airport, he decided to try it. Sadly, it tasted like any old taco and we were both disappointed!

155917_10152350756295343_566846268_n.jpg

Then we waited...

155917_10152350756300343_2114995898_n.jpg

The flight there was incredibly smooth and actually got there a little bit early, which was fab. We took the Flyaway bus from LAX to Union Station, which is suppose to cost $7 but for some reason we got on for free. Here is a picture I took on the plane for all my coaster geek friends <3

And some other pics from the plane ride!

Soon, we were at Union Station, which wasn't too bad apart from the annoying people trying to sell M&Ms and Gatorade which had probably been stolen. There was also a lady on the Metro that I was certain was dead, but thankfully she wasn't.

230336_10152350767975343_1435852074_n.jpg

Soon, we arrived at our station! Hollywood and Highland!

It was a Saturday night so Hollywood Boulevard was bustling and I was getting frustrated trying to find the hotel with my big suitcase. I walked a few blocks the wrong way, but we found it eventually. I snapped a few pictures which are pretty poor but I was walking and snapping at once.

There was also a Jewish bus of kids who were asking people on the street if they were Jewish, which was pretty random. Behold, the Mitzvah tank!

73995_10152350768480343_1478844727_n.jpg

Then, we got to our hotel and had the worst sleep ever </3

DAY 2- Hollywood Touristy Things and Star Homes Tour

I got up early the next morning, ready to try Ihop for the first time. I walked outside sad to find that it was a bit rainy and chilly.

We greatly approved, especially of the stuffed apple cinnamon and custard french toast. We ended up eating at Ihop three times over the ten days.

We then went to pick up our LA Go Passes at the Egyptian Theatre (which we ended up not getting our money's worth by about ten or fifteen dollars which was a tad depressing).

28756_10152351414570343_2004246665_n.jpg

After finding out that Warner Brothers studio required a reservation and could only be done between 2-4PM, we scrapped it and were going to go to Paramount instead. Sadly, things got a bit iffy with the bus not coming for like, an hour so we ditched that plan and headed to Madame Tussauds. There was cool theming in the Metro though!

27907_10152351424040343_1112247097_n.jpg

I also was excited to see Ray Bolger's star on the Walk of Fame.

Yay Madame Tussauds! I took a lot more pictures but for fear of boring people, I will only post a few.

We stopped up on Mulholland Drive for the view of downtown Los Angeles as well as the view of Hollywood Hills and the Hollywood sign.

We also seen places in Beverly Hills, including the hotel where Whitney Houston died and bits of the Playboy Mansion. We made a stop at Rodeo drive too, which was a joke, I felt like such a peasant.

We then went to the Hollywood Museum, which was a bit too Marilyn Monroe-y for my taste, but I did get to see Judy Garland's stuff which was fab.

65103_10152352143555343_715337850_n.jpg

As well as the signatures from the Wizard of Oz cast!

598348_10152352143795343_1127707149_n.jpg

But yah, anyways, there were a few other cool things like Sweeney Todd cast clothing, some Marilyn Monroe stuff which I got tired of, and Hannibal's cell, but I won't post pictures.

Although, CAMEL TOE!

262764_10152352144820343_1137177054_n.jpg

I got hungry, so I ordered a piece of pizza, which I didn't know was gonna be the size of my head.

576293_10152352145090343_1233942771_n.jpg

Even though it was only like, 6PM at this point, we were pretty tired since we woke up at like 5 in the morning, so we went back to the room and chilled. We went to see if Iris was playing, but it wasn't, which ended up being one of two times it spited us! And so that concluded the first full day in California, I will leave you with one more photo of me and E.T. (yes I sucked it up and went near him although it pained me).

Re: Cali & Coasters- Day 1 and 2 up

DAY 3- Paramount Studios and Santa Monica

So even though no one is reading this, here is day three! Since I found out that the Warner Bros and Paramount tours needed reservations, we decided to make a reservation for the Paramount one since Warner Bros could only be done at 2-4, which would have ruined our plans for the rest of the night. So, after sitting in the most terrifying phone box of life, we had a reservation for 11 and headed out to McDonalds.

12117_10152355107390343_1863685860_n.jpg

Since we had plenty of time to kill before we had to head out, we went to Grauman's Chinese Theatre to check out the handprints!

Then, I got harassed by Spiderman, who literally GRABBED me into a photo by the arm. Yoda jumped into the picture and kept begging me for a tip, but I only gave like a buck to Spiderman and told Yoda to piss off. Spidey kept bothering me every time I would pass by, asking me where I was from and telling me I was pretty and this and that, which ended up in my boyfriend issuing a threat :p .

68166_10152355110675343_678334474_n.jpg

We went to Hollywood and Highland mall just to kill a bit of time, and there's actually a nice view from the top of it!

181844_10152355113005343_1060862959_n.jpg

Finally, we headed to Paramount Studios, but not before being told that "YOU'RE UNDER ARREST, FOR WHAT? ABSOLUUUUTELY NOTHING, SO GO SHOVE SCISSORS DOWN YOUR THROAT." Oh, and casual condom on the Walk of Fame.

The New York area was the coolest, but they were filming something so we didn't get to see much of it.

156160_10152355147090343_743601350_n.jpg

We saw that Dr. Phil was filming, and we also went on the set of the Doctors.

548805_10152355148880343_373802108_n.jpg

Then there was other stuff, like Lucille Ball's dressing room and the school from the Brady Bunch. There was also a room where apparently a woman ran off the tour and went up there because she knew it was Tom Cruise's office, so he had to lock himself in the bathroom until security came. I won't bore you with more photos though!

After the tour, we caught the bus to Santa Monica, which took agesss.

We ended up going around twice, and that was when I realized Ethan hates roller coasters. There was also a fab plastic Santa on the Froghopper thingy.

Since the aquarium was burdenous and decided to be closed on Mondays (which it only said so in the fine print of the booklet I had, ugh) we just walked around a little bit. We couldn't find the restaurant we were looking for either, so I got really annoyed and had a bit of a crap time in Santa Monica

182380_10152355181175343_756084038_n.jpg

I needed some shopping relief, so I went and bought a glam yet hideous pair of leggings at the mall.

481504_10152355185330343_2144842596_n.jpg

We went back to the hotel after Santa Monica and had a much needed sleep. Santa Monica was okay really, but we didn't really DO much there and the bus rides were annoying and full of weirdo sketchballs. Although, we did meet a fabulous old man who seemed to have a lot of great advice and life experience.

So yep, that concludes day three!

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

Three days & still no In 'N Out Burger? WTF?!
I bet Ethan loved the Santa Monica West Coaster. :p

Don't worry, people will jump all over it as soon as you post Disneyland, possibly Knott's if you went there.

Interesting fact: nobody on CF gives a **** about places they haven't already been to themselves. Once you post a picture of a ride they've been on, they won't be able to post fast enough about how "we only had to wait 20 minutes" or "I thought it was rough".

It's the one thing, in my opinion, that TPR has over CF: people on there will actually get involved, make comments and ask questions about "new" parks when there are trip reports of more out of the way places. There's a genuine interest in the unusual over there that people here just don't have.

You're better off just reposting your Alton and Thorpe pictures to be perfectly honest.

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

I didn't get off at Rodeo Drive, just slowed way down like a bunch of pervs searching for celebs <3

Still can't believe one of those gross Boulevard people grabbed you haha!

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

^ Yah, they either post on the really common ones like Thorpe, or the really foreign ones like Asia or whatever! But yah I did go to Knotts and Disney, even though I only got 5 creds at Knotts since I only got to go for like, an hour :p .

Three days & still no In 'N Out Burger? WTF?!

There was one right across from the Ihop we went to, but we didn't ever go </3 We did really like Jack in the Box though; we ate there twice in San Diego. Actually we ate like massive sows in San Diego to be honest.

I bet Ethan loved the Santa Monica West Coaster.

He hatedddd it, but the odd thing is, is that he loved Big Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain. It was like hit or miss with him. After he went on a coaster I'd mostly have to avoid him for 5 minutes because he would just turn awful and grumpy. I called it the five minute buffer zone, but on Tower of Terror it was more like ten minutes.

I didn't get off at Rodeo Drive, just slowed way down like a bunch of pervs searching for celebs <3

Still can't believe one of those gross Boulevard people grabbed you haha!

I didn't even WANT to get off at Rodeo, everything was just so expensive that I felt like a massive peasant. I couldn't even go into Prada because my shoes were too wet, so I went into a shoe store and just got glared at like I had just been out of the homeless shelter or something. I didn't see any celebs though, I was annoyed!

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

I tried that Dorito taco thing, and it was just like any other taco. You guys SO need the mexican chicken, it's amazing!

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

^ Canada might have it, though I'm not really sure, I don't eat there often! The Dorito one was disappointing but at least I got my buffalo chicken sub, which was amazing.

I almost always read TRs from parks I've never and probably will never go to. Rarely read the ones from parks done to death unless somebody who had never been there before posted a TR. And I had read the TR Tay, just not commented! :p

Does Ethan ever smile? :p

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

I was waiting for the Disneyland, however I was wondering how the Santa Monica West Coaster was. I was there but didn't have the cash at the time to get the ride it.

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

I dunno how much it was as an individual ride, we just had the GO card which included admission. It was a pretty **** coaster but it was decent enough for being on a little pier. Plus, it was featured in the show Modern Family, so it's amazing <3

Does Ethan ever smile?

Yes he just hates pictures. He smiles a lot in the Disney pics though :p

Yeah. Too bad I was broke at the time and my parents wouldn't go for it :(

Either way great trip report so far Taylor and I look forward to hearing about your Disney experience!

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

It was $5 (for 2 circuits, which seemed to be the standard deal).

When I rode, there was some kid on it who didn't like it - so we stopped after the first circuit. I didn't make them send it round again (there was just me left on it) so I could get the second circuit.

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 3 up!

At least you found the road, we got lost and god knows where we ended up lol.

Was the pier any good have heard mixed things about it, but it's from Lost Boys :)

Shall have to find it next time.

I tend to read most trip reports including the ones Gavin does of places without coasters. I just don't normally post in them as there is nothing to add as its been covered etc.

Am glad your getting comments though as our Cali one got zero lol.

Aw that sucks, you're not missing much though. I had to sacrifice a lot of creds on this trip which was a bummer and I would have liked to spend more time on the pier but in the end Ethan spent just as much on the trip as I did and so it wouldn't have been fair if I were self-centred the entire time.

When I rode, there was some kid on it who didn't like it - so we stopped after the first circuit. I didn't make them send it round again (there was just me left on it) so I could get the second circuit.

Haha, I would have been fine only going one time, it wasn't really super spectacular. Ethan didn't want to go again but the ride operator was all like, giving us the thumbs up so I gave one back not knowing what he meant, so he sent it round again.

If I had known it was only $5 for the individual coaster, I wouldn't have gotten the Go Pass. I think I may have lost about $20 since we didn't end up doing Belmont in San Diego. Grr. Was a great value if we had done everything we had originally planned to do though.

Was the pier any good have heard mixed things about it, but it's from Lost Boys

It was cute I guess, there wasn't very much to do in Santa Monica though. Like, we went there to do the pier and the aquarium and to eat at this one chicken place, but we ended up doing only the pier as the aquarium was closed. We literally just got the cred, walked to the end of the pier, and left because there wasn't a huge amount to do. I would have stayed there for the better part of the day had it been warmer, because the beach was nice. I don't know how you were getting around, but we used public transportation and so it took us about an hour and a quarter to get there </3

Its Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in Lost Boys, not Santa Monica! ;-)

(Although SM is in lots of stuff, given its LA location! See Here )

DAY 4 - UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

I wanted to be at the park for opening because I thought it might be busy, so after having godly Cinnastick pancakes at Ihop, we headed there. We got there maybe fifteen minutes after opening, which wasn't a huge deal because the park was dead.

My fabulous salt shaker trick!

NOM, but I couldn't finish them all, which was surprising considering I eat like such a man.

After taking the Metro one stop and the shuttle to the park, we were there! I was pretty stoked because I had fond memories of the one in Florida, which I had been to nearly twelve years prior.

61427_10152357559160343_1681199093_n.jpg

They had it all decked out for Christmas with theming from the Grinch, which was pretty cute despite the fact I hate the actual movie of the Grinch. The cartoon was cute though.

12081_10152357559720343_2037201904_n.jpg

I thought the Whoville tree was well done though, and people were getting super thrilled over the fake snow which I realized would become a trend at a few of the parks we went to.

382167_10152357560085343_2041655811_n.jpg

The Studio Tour was the first thing we did since that tends to get longer lines apparently.

I had to take a picture of the ET poster because it was gross.

The King Kong part of the tour was super cool, although I got really claustrophobic for some reason, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment too much. It was very well done, for sure! When Kong and the T-rex jump on your car it's all like, WHATTT.

398390_10152357561465343_123434801_n.jpg

There was also a cool part where they showed a car explosion scene. I have a video of it but I'm not sure how to put it on here from Facebook.

62420_10152357561885343_190565392_n.jpg

The flash flood was pretty impressive as well.

398387_10152357562325343_1998074651_n.jpg

My favourite part of the Studio Tour was probably the part in the Metro where it just gets destroyed.

62458_10152357563080343_2018966126_n.jpg

The Jaws scene was pretty cool too although I wish they had an actual Jaws ride because the one in Florida was fab until they decided to RIP IT OUT. Jaws squirted me in the face with water, which really did not impress me. Also, what is WITH Universal and spraying people with water?! It seemed like on EVERY ride, no matter how pointless it was to spray people, you still got sprayed. I could see if it like, added something to the experience, but sometimes it was just a few drops and I was all like, what?

There was a cute Grinch scene as well.

And the Bates Motel!

One of my favourite sets was the one from War of the Worlds, because it was so elaborate!

Overall thoughts: Studio Tour- The Studio Tour was fabulous, it was more than I had remembered it being from the one in Florida. I like how they don't just continuously bore you with facts, they try to spice it up with actually showing you things instead of just showing you the buildings that filming it done in. The Paramount tour I went on the day before was still good, but the one at Universal blows it out of the water and is a lot less traditional as far as studio tours are concerned.

So, next we took a look at the Simpsons Ride, which was closed so I was a bit pissed off thinking it wasn't going to open for the rest of the day. We went down to the Lower Lot after riding down about six zillion escalators. First thing we rode down there was Revenge of the Mummy.

We put out stuff in the lockers and walked right onto the ride.

Overall thoughts: Revenge of the Mummy- Despite the fact that the effects after the launch weren't working or just weren't turned on, I thought the ride was great! I got to ride it twice in a row since there was no line, but Ethan got off after the first go because he really disliked it. I had no idea what to expect from this ride other than the fact there's a launch and it goes backwards at some point, so I liked the element of surprise. I never got to ride the one in Florida because it was built after I went, so I'm glad I got to do it now! I love rides that are indoors, and the fact that this wasn't super intense but was really good fun made me really enjoy it.

Even though I wanted to ride Mummy a few more times, we decided to go to Transformers, which was surprisingly also a walk on; however, we waited in the queue to meet Bumblebee first which was a really cool costume. The queue for meeting him was pretty much longer than we waited for anything that day.

Since the queue was so short, we rode it twice!

Overall thoughts: Transformers- Once again I literally had no idea what it was until I actually got in the station. I had been on a few rides like this before, such as DarKastle and the one at Rainbow Magicland, but this one was just in a league of its own I thought. It was absolutely fantastic and the effects were flawless. Once again I didn't understand the random spray of water, but whatever. If there was ever a 4D ride that made me actually feel like I was in the scene, it was definitely this one.

We both loved it!

As much as I didn't want to go on Jurassic Park because it was chilly out, I didn't want to miss it either so I sucked it up. It was also a walk on, and I'm glad I didn't end up paying $4 for a poncho because we hardly even got wet.

Overall thoughts: Jurassic Park- Unfortunately I cheated a bit and watched a video of it on Youtube before I went, which ruined the surprise element, but I still appreciate the effort that went into this ride. It's very well done and very elaborate, especially the T-rex at the end which I thought was really cool. I hate water rides that drench you but I love water rides in general so this was a nice mix of both of those as well as great theming. Although the people in front of us (an older woman and a young kid) kept saying the drop was 300 feet which made me facepalm like five times, I enjoyed my ride on it.

We headed back to Krustyland and found that Simpsons was actually open now. It was the longest wait of the day at about fifteen minutes, but the theming of the entire area was enough to keep me entertained as I queued.

Overall thoughts: the Simpsons- I had a general idea of what to expect but didn't really know exactly what it was. I don't know if this makes me a bad enthusiast but I enjoyed things more throughout my trip when I didn't know what was coming. But yah, it was a really well done ride and had a few laughs thrown in which I thought was good considering the Simpsons are meant to be funny, although they haven't really been in recent years. My only qualm is that I got the Duff beer song stuck in my head for DAYS after!

We got to meet HOMER when we got off!

He started dragging me away and then I realized he was bringing me to Marge because of her blue hair!

I got hungry, so we ate at some random chicken place which was okay, but a bit pricey and I'm not a massive fan of chicken legs and such anyway.

After lunch we did Shrek 4D, and let's face it, who doesn't love Shrek?

Overall thoughts: Shrek 4D- After doing things like Transformers and stuff, obviously the 3D wasn't as good but it was still amusing in true Shrek-like fashion. I liked the Three Little Pigs, Gingy, and Pinocchio before we even got into the theatre! I wish Gingy was more of a main character because he is my favourite, but at least he made an appearance in the show! It was cute and had some adult humour, so it's definitely worth a go if you're there.

We headed to Terminator after, which I didn't take pictures of.

Overall thoughts: Terminator- Didn't like it. Yah, it was cheesy which was amusing but the 3D was hurting my eyes and to be honest Terminator never really appealed to me. I liked the fact they mixed 3D on the screen with actual actors but overall I wouldn't want to do it again and I'm kinda glad they're getting rid of it.

Apart from the shat that Terminator was, I liked that area of the park.

The last thing we had to do was House of Horrors.

230247_10152357576815343_408615686_n.jpg

Overall thoughts: House of Horrors- No. Sorry Universal Studios, but as a big fan of haunts, yours sucked. Okay, it might have been good had they not let twenty people in at a time. The park was dead enough they could have sent around individual groups are certain time increments, but they chose to just make it a big ****. Some of the theming was actually pretty nice so why they decided to ruin it with big groups is baffling.

We stopped for a second to watch a show because it had hot blonde girls and I knew Ethan would like it even though he tried so hard not to look for fear of pissing me off until I told him to go for it, then he wouldn't take his eyes off :p

The last thing we did was the Special Effects Stage. It was kind of a dud until the end when they showed how Paranorman was made (holy crap the work that goes into that is insane) and when they had the hilarious astronaut flying around <3 I literally cried of laughter.

We headed back and since Iris was sold out, we went out to eat at Lucky Devils, which was a place featured on the Food Network for their El Diablo burger. I have an iron tongue and stomach so it didn't seem very hot to me but damn it was a good burger and the spicy tomato soup was great. I can't find the pictures of it for some reason but it doesn't look that appetizing half eaten on a plate anyway.

That concludes day 4!

Re: Cali & Coasters PTR- Day 4 up (Universal)

I can't imagine what Universal must be like on a dead day, there must be like, NOTHING to do haha!
