BGT - Future of Rhino Rally / Gwazi

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

That elephant to the left of the Rhino Rally logo is the only part of their enclosure that you can see now. This is the current map which explains it better:

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

Wow so they must have gotten rid of the whole path then! There used to be a massive kind of paved area between the elephants, Rhino Rally and some other animals, I take it that's gone now? Kind of makes sense seeing as a massive bit of Cheetah Hunt now flies through that area.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

Yeah, there was nothing there from what I remember either, you pass a few shops on your left, then pass the elephants on the right. There was a safari ride, but as I mentioned before, it was pay extra.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

The safari ride is an extra tour where you get up close to the animals and feed a giraffe, it was awesome.

Perhaps, they're running one train simply to save money

That could never be the case. When I was there it was walk on all day, yet they were running 2 trains for some reason, even though each train was departing with around 4 people!

You evidently can't distinguish a joke! :--D

On a serious note though, Gwazi has serious down time and capacity issues, with loading a single train in excess of three minutes, with the second trains waiting on the brake run for about half a minute, which is frankly a crime...although it is mostly due to the inefficiency of the staff and MFs.

Once, I even saw the tiger side stuck on the lift hill!

The four people per train was because of a ridiculous fastpass system...at least when I went.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

^Actually, Screamscape have reported that Tiger was originally down due to budget issues, so maybe it is something financially charged.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

When we went last week I was surprised to see both Gwazi trains running on the Lion track, but thought it was just something new for the off-season as Lion is always the only side open after Halloween.

I also noticed that the Rhino Rally entrance was blocked off & the signs removed. I went to the entrance to show the wife & kid the great views of Cheetah Hunt from that area, which are now no longer accessible. :(
You can see what I'm talking about at 5:23-5:58 in this off-ride video I filmed last year.

Strange that they've blocked this area off as they had built a viewing deck there just for guests to watch the coaster & it was one of my favorite areas in the park.
As for Rhino Rally itself, we quite enjoyed the ride. The collapsing bridge effect was the best, but that was removed & used as part of Cheetah hunt's theme when the coaster opened. We never did the shortened version of Rally after Cheetah Hunt opened, but the only thing that made Rally good was the sense of humor of the guide that we were lucky enough to get the one time we went on the ride. I've heard that the ride was boring if you didn't get the right guide.

From Screamscape:

General Park News - (11/13/12) According to a Screamscape source, Gwazi Tiger was shut down primarily for budget purposes only. While Rhino Rally was supposed to be getting a long term Rehab, insiders say that they don’t know if much of anything has been done to it. There is also the issue of staffing, as all over the old Rally drivers were transferred to new positions out in the park. Since then a number of them have apparently quit, and according to a former Rally driver the park hasn’t said a thing to them yet about retraining to drive the course again, or if there are possible reopening dates.

Also, seems like there could be bad news for the drop tower:

2013 - Drop Tower / Desert Dive - Planning - (11/13/12) According to the latest rumors, the park’s plans to add a drop tower attraction may have been put on hold indefinitely, possibly due to the issues they’ve had with the drop tower in the Williamsburg park.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

^I don't get that thing with the drop tower. Yes, Mach Tower is being a pain in the arse. Just like....get one from Intamin or something I don't know?

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

Hopefully the park can give "Gwazi" the hybrid treatment to get "Tiger" side coaster running again. No point in leaving 1 side SBNO & the other working as people will not like that & will look quite pointless.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

Rhino Rally is open again & back on the park map. The reason for the lengthy closure is still unknown, as the attraction remains exactly like before the closing with no refurbishment or expansion to the ride.

It's also looking like the Tiger side of Gwazi is indeed gone for good. The sign that shows the wait time for the Tiger side of the queue has been removed & that side is now used as the Quick Queue entrance. A bridge has been constructed over the Tiger track in the station for Quick Queue riders to cross to the Lion side.
As mentioned previously in this thread, Gwazi is only running one Lion themed train & one Tiger themed train. The other Tiger train can be seen stripped down on the old Tiger maintenance track & both trains are now being used for spare parts according to park employees, who also say that the maintenance budget has been cut to the point that it can't run both sides any longer.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

So, so ,strange.

Why go to all the effort to completely remove the ride from existence, and then reopen it a few months later? Getting brand new maps printed an all.... yet a simple "Rhino Rally is currently closed" sign at the park entrance and on the website would have surely been enough, and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

Why not just scrap both Gwazi tracks altogether then? Running one side of a dueling coaster kind of ruins the entire point of them. That's what causes half the excitement of rides like that. Now I have never ridden either, but I know Colossus at SFMM, the few times I have been on it while it raced, it added so much more to the experience.

I'm assuming roughness was the issue, but didn't they just get new trains recently for it? Just seems weird.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

I wish I could remember what side I'd been on <//3

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

I'm glad I have both the creds! Not a great coaster but I shall miss it ever so slightly.

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

The side that's open now is the side they always used to run. Lucky as well that I got both sides a few years back.

Merlin really don't like wooden coasters do they lol.

As for the rally, it was not good when it had the old layout. I also find it strange that they removed it then put it back. Maybe it will just open during peak times?

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

The duelling coasters in Florida are dropping off one by one! Oh well, got the cred <3

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

At least stampida does still race, even if the cars are only 1/3 loaded......

Re: Rhino Rally / Gwazi Tiger - Down for the count

Not even Millennium Flyers could save this ride, they'd do well to burn it and put something better in its place.
