Best tunnel?

We have all been on that ride where, mid-course, the train enters a tunnel, which suddenly takes the ride experience to a whole new level.

Two favorite ride tunnels that always spring to mind for myself are:

- Magnum XL-200 - The tunnel after the second hill is entered at a high speed, and does a great job of capturing the noise of the riders and train to immerse you in an utter wall of sound.

- The Beast - The double helix finale with tunnel absolutely does not pass the touch test, how the heck is that element allowed? And the tunnel on turn 4 after the trim shed is another great sound trap of screaming, wooden track clattering, and rolling wheels.

Kraken and Kumba spring to mind. My favourite is Montu's after the loop and before the Immelmann.
An honourable mention goes to Runaway Mine Train.

Oblivion.

I'm also an Oblivion fan boy so I'll second that.

It makes the ride look more intimidating and it's impressive how it is 115ft deep. I can't think of a better coaster tunnel.

Hades at Olympus Park. It's dramatically epic! And riders go through it twice.

I remember entering the car park and seeing an wooden coaster in an island near the entrance. I had no idea what coaster it was it how riders got there. When I first rode Hades and went though the tunnel and out the other end, I sqealed. It was fab. Although I didn't say fab back then, so it was probably "**** amazing" instead.

A passing mention to Inferno's tunnel. I like the build up with swinging and mist before the lift hill.

The best tunnel to me was that of the Flyer Comet at Whalom Park
In the 90's this whole bunny hill and the drop leading into it were placed in a tunnel that even had a bottom, so it was completely dark - http://rcdb.com/217.htm?p=18328 - but the tunnels roof was flat, so from the outside you couldn't tell there was a hill inside and suddenly you would get airtime in the dark <3

I agree with Hyde on The Beast's tunnels that are so amazing at night. Similarly there's Ravine Flyer's series of tunnels, although much shorter than The Beast's. Neither coaster would be nearly as good without them.

I also really like tunnels at the start of the ride, like the one on Phoenix that wraps completely around from the station exit to the start of the lift hill. It actually makes that boring section of track fun. Another great one is on Great White at Morey's Piers that drops immediately under the boardwalk straight out of the station. And do I really need to mention the Incredible Hulk at IoA? Can you imagine riding it without launching up that tunnel?

Then there's The Voyage's underground tunnel that houses the ride's "triple down". <3
Doesn't really get any better than that, does it?

The best tunnel ever is Disneyland Paris's Big Thunder Mountain tunnel finale heading back towards the station.. Oh. My. Word..

+1

I did say Oblivion but I'm changing my mind to this. It's one of the best endings to a coaster in the world.

Yeah, Beast's tunnels are amazing in every sense of the word. You don't see them coming, they're loud, and that one at the end simply doesn't feel safe.

Leviathan's tunnel is great, too, especially at night with the eyes lit. And it's soooo loud! <3 And Tennessee Tornado's drop in a tunnel is flat out amazing. Ride towards the back and you don't even know when it ends. Voyage looks like it could have some decent tunnels too, especially the one with the triple down. I'll find out in a week!

Good point ECG and Jarrett - totally forgot about Ravine Flyer. And while the bridge is not a technical tunnel, it still remains one of my most favorite roller coaster elements out there.

Tennessee Tornado is a bizarre first drop, and that tunnel does not appear as large as it really is to the outside observer.

Another good tunnel that comes to mind is Lightning Racer at Hershey, with that great mid tunnel run of the two track coming alongside each other.

I actually like the tunnel on the mine train at Alton Towers. Going along the rapids with people waving etc.

Also the tunnel on Vampire at night is fun, it's cold and the speed you take through there is good.

Yeah I'd agree with that Marc. A tunnel is made so much better when it is reaalllllllly cold, especially on days when it is hot outside.

I haven't been on many coasters with tunnels ... But I really like the tunnel on mighty Canadian mindbuster
Also maybe the tunnel on anaconda. I like how it has that cement head-chopper effect!

I'd say that Tonnerre de Zeus has a pretty well-placed tunnel.

And I'd like the think that the LED tunnel on Delphis would be fun to ride.
