On the BBC 6 O'Clock news this evening, George Alagiah (such a brilliant name!) said the word "controversy."

He pronounced it as "con-tro-verse-e", whereas I've always pronounced it "con-trov-er-sea".

Both are perfectly acceptable, but as George Alagiah is on the BBC, I'm starting to think that my pronunciation is controversial.

See, when I say "controversial", I pronounce it ""con-tro-verse-all", not emphasising the V as I do with "controversy."

How do you pronounced "controversy"?

Con-trov-er-sea and con-trov-er-shall

Took a bit of thinking though!

(+1)

After saying both aloud several dozen times, I have concluded I am more comfortable with con-trov-er-sea.

Although anyone walking past my room in the last 2 minutes probably thinks I've lost my mind.

^I've probably got it wrong (as I've now confused myself) but I think that's what Ian was getting at with the 2nd option in the poll.

anyway, yes, con-trov-a-see for me

Damn you Ian! You've successfully made me confused!

I've decided that I pronounce it like LFTL: Con-tra-ver-see.

No idea what you're on about for one of those pronunciations, but I say it:

Get ready..

Omg..

Con-tra-ver-see
I think it's all about which syllable you put stress on. Contra-vers-ee or Con-troversee

It depends how much of a rush I am to get it out (ooer)...

In normal conversation, then con-trov-a-sea.

If I'm taking it slow because I need to speak "correctly" and well (if I'm, talking to directors, important people or in-laws and need to make an impression) - Con-tro-ver-sea.

Controversial is always cont-tra-ver-shall.

Con-tra-verse-e

Ew.. I'm like Taylor. But I have pronounced it all the different ways, but that is the way I say it the most.

I always thought it was the first option.

The v sound is definitely not a part of the second syllable, anyway.

But, as much as I hate to admit it... I'm with Taylor. It's Con-tra-verse-see. The o sound just isn't there.

For me it's either Con-tra-verse-e or, sometimes, Con-tra-vers-sea.

I can't decide after saying it aloud both ways fifty times lol.
