What's new

Alton Towers | Unknown | Huss Top Spin | 2025

To be honest, the new Nemesis theming they have added makes the area look like X sector 2, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it were for the top spin.

Sounds like the work of ChatGPT to me.

I actually prefer some of ChatGPT’s suggestions

I'm really not understanding the hype about this. I get that any new flat is an improvement, but why get excited for Forbidden Valley to literally have the same line up as 10 years ago.

I actually think they would have been better off getting something completely different in its place, particularly having spent so much on the Nemesis retrack for most of the general public to think they've just painted it... We all know the huge amount of work involved that went into Nemesis Reborn, but for the GP there is very little thats changed. Adding in the same flat ride as before, in the same place just feeds into the same narrative for me, what has really changed? Is it really worth someone coming to Alton for the first time in a few years, just to find out its basically the same ride they've already done that was removed a while ago?

I do agree but I view it as them undoing the bad decisions that were made previously.

Nemesis Sub Terra should never have closed, Ripsaw should have been replaced rather than just removed and the whole Retro Squad was just strange and cheapened the areas.

Albeit 10 years later than it should have been but a brand new fully themed new model Top Spin as a Ripsaw replacement is a step forward and a big improvement on the Forbidden Sweep game that replaced it in 2016 😂

Although if The Blade is to close as rumoured then they haven't actually gained an extra flat ride in FV at all 😂

I think it'll get the same reception as The Hex reopening, where enthusiasts will be genuinely excited for a few days before picking apart the flaws whilst the general public will be interested for a few weeks before it quickly fades into the same level of popularity as The Blade.

Not to say they shouldn't be adding rides as the park desperately needs capacity, especially with the poor availability they've had this year. It is however somewhat underwhelming to basically be getting the same 30 year old ride that was there before, whilst the likes of Efteling and even Paultons are both doing far more interesting non-coaster additions.

Given the abundance of flat rides that are available in the market today, I found this addition to be quite boring, bland, and just plain odd.

They've already re-done Nemesis to the exact same specifications as previous with a few new theming elements - why bring back a somewhat lacklustre ride that wasn't even that popular?

I understand that there is an urgent need to address the flat ride situation at Alton Towers, but this really should be part of a package of rides, similar to that of what Thorpe Park did in the early 2000's with Zodiac, Vortex and Detonator, as well as Rush & Slammer.

Sorry - I'll get off my soapbox now.

Agreed! We’ve had nemesis reborn advertised as a new experience, Hex reopening advertised as though managing to keep a ride open after 2 years of downtime is something to celebrate, the reopening of sub terra because nemesis was closed for a year.

That’s 3 experiences off the bat that are, to the GP, pretty much the same as before.

Why are we rehashing a 4th that was an off the shelf flat ride? Are there no better flats on the market than there were when ripsaw closed, that might offer someone who has been to towers many times some kind of new experience and entice them to visit?

I think the reality is - cost. They already have the plot, probably doesn't require much in the way of new foundations, could probably be easily pushed through a planning application/amendment as "replacing for something existing", it's a known entity to the park in terms of training and maintenance, the queue setup can probably just be copied from the old plans. I reckon it's simply the cheapest way to get a ride back into that area.

It's a shame, but I think I can understand the logic. I just hope it provides enough excitement from the crowds to justify it.

Hmmm, I think that's a bit overly kind towards the thought process.

The ride, whilst broadly in the same location, is still different in terms of location, and is being built on a whole new concrete platform going over a pathway. Queue will be completely different as a result.

Ripsaw closed almost 10 years ago, and whilst there will be staff (predominantly engineers) who were at the park then, there will have been a lot of turnover. And it is still a new ride, so will require the same level of training and such as any new ride would.

It's less of a risk, sure, as the park know roughly what maintenance costs would be long-term, and what the public reaction is to one of those rides. But I don't think this ride is necessarily any cheaper, notably at least, than any other ride would have been.

I still remain curious what the wider audience reaction will be to the park introducing a ride which was removed 10 years ago.

Oh... I confess I haven't followed this it all - I just read "top spin Forbidden Valley" and assumed the rest.

That makes the decision slightly weirder, then. :D

Ripsaw was always quite popular, particularly as a spectator ride… perhaps they’re trying to repeat a previously proven formula?

I don’t think it would be cost related seeing as they’re going to all the effort of building a new concrete platform. That does seem like a slightly odd decision when the land was already suited to a Top Spin and could have had one installed a lot more easily than via the method they’ve gone for… but maybe they have some sort of aesthetic idea that made them want to go for the more elaborate structure?

Makes the decision not to go back to AT next year even easier. Haven't been since 2019 and them not really adding anything new since then seems crazy. Lots of odd decisions from the park over the last decade.

Ironically I'm the opposite. I want to see what Hex is like and this is a welcome addition in my eyes. I protested to go back to the park whilst the skyride was SBNO so with this opening, Hex hopefully open and nemesis 2.0, next year will hopefully be a good time to return.

My question is why have they gone for the floorless back-to-back seating arrangement? One of the most frustrating things about Talocan which is objectively one of the best flat rides in the world is facing the damn wall for the entire ride if you get unlucky with your seating. I wonder if there'll be anything to look at if you get assigned to the backward facing row..
