Alton Towers Scarefest 2012

Waffleman

Mega Poster
The whole Scarefest 2012 lineup is exactly the same as last year with exception to 'The Boiler House', which has been replaced by 'The Sanctuary. However, the ticket/booking system has been altered in a way that allows cheaper maze entry at earlier parts of the day, and individual maze tickets have been removed entirely. Also the 'Scarefest Freedom Ticket' has been introduced exclusively for Annual Pass holders at £50, this entitles the bearer unlimited access to both paid mazes and fastrack entry to Terror of the Towers.

The Sanctuary
The Sanctuary is a new scare maze that invites guests to book an appointment at an abandoned facility, but a terrifying twist awaits.
New developments on the X Sector site have uncovered an area of the Towers where human experiments were rumoured to have taken place in the early 1900’s by a controlling force known only as The Ministry of Joy. What starts out as an innocent visit through The Sanctuary soon takes a turn for the worse. Will you make it out with a smile on your face?

Other information, including ticket prices (double-maze tickets vary from £9 - £13) can be found on Alton Towers' website.

Now, the Scarefest Freedom Ticket IS a fantastic idea. Scarefest really is a fantastic day out. BUT, my only
Niggle is the extortionate pricing they charge to experience their Scare Attractions. It's terrible.

I've got high hopes for this year's event though. They've had a shuffle round with their Entertainments Team (the old Ents manager has moved to Chessington). The new Manager was the brain box behind the new ending to Sub-Terra too, although not the most incredible thing in the world, he certainly improved it!

Yay Scarefest, can't wait!

And I'm guessing that even though it's exclusive for MAP holders we still have to pay for it?

£50!! Who in their right mind would pay that? Seriously, that is obscene, especially considering the mazes are average at best. Stupid Alton.

I can't free more Jordan, whilst in theory, it's a clever ticketing option, as I said in my previous post, the sheer amount they charge for their attractions is terrible, seriously steep!

The "Ministry of Joy"?.... Just so you all know, Richard, Will and I have NOTHING to do with Alton's new maze xD

OUTRAGE!

I'm a big fan of them using the X Sector maze thing to publicise their new-for-2013 attraction. I like that. Looks like it's going to be another Merlin disaster/horror themed ride yet again! As fab as Candy Holland is, I wish she'd broaden her ideas a bit.

Just to clear this up, that £50 is to allow you (as a MAP holder) unlimited entry throughout the whole of scarefest. As I read it, that's every one of the 15 days if you really wanted. If you're just visiting one day, access to the mazes will cost MAP holders £10.40. So yeah, you'd still have to go 5 days to make it worthwhile, so it's still a bit stupid. But hey, there's only 100 of them, so surely there are 100 local pass holders daft enough to go 5+ times?

Anyway, the reason I came in here was this...

I agree. This news actually makes me sad. I really wish they could come up with something different.

They certainly seem predictable. Merlin have way over done this disaster/horror theme. Why they can't vary their ideas a bit, I don't know. Still I guess if it is done in the right way, it will be alright.
Having said that, I guess I won't know as I will not be paying £50 to see it.

This 'early 1900s' theme seems to clash with the futuristic signage we've seen on SW7 so far, but whatever.

The £50 pass thing is stupid in my view and you can bet your bottom dollar that they won't shift 100 of them.

"Hey, I just searched up me arse and found a bit of the Towers that had been lost since lunch time yesterday" - yawn!

It's a bit annoying considering the X-Sector is hardly post-apocalyptic, dystopian yes but it's hardly a destroyed future world, it's more Big Brother/1984 than anything so if they do try and shoehorn the post-apocalyptic thing in somewhere it'll be quite gash.

The new maze sounds much better than Boiler House although now that it's going in the Towers as well my main worry is that they're going to shorten TOTT. One of the best things about TOTT is it's sheer length and that fact that it seems to go on forever with no escape. If they shorten it then it won't be the same.

Although I have heard that it'll go on a different floor although I doubt that as the stairs to go up are in the middle of the TOTT layout and blocked off. The same person also said CoS are going in the goalstriker tent which I doubt as it's tiny.

The main thing that bugs me about Scarefest is that they charge you for the extra mazes. Thorpe have 5 mazes that are all included in the entry prize and they're really popular. Last year I think the longest queue I saw for either of the paid mazes was 5 people.

Glad that the scare zone is returning (although apparently in a different location) as they managed to get it right (unlike Thorpe). They just need to add a couple more round the park as apart from Towers Street and the inside of the mazes you can't tell it's Halloween at all at the park.

The only way Scarefest is going to grow as an event is if they add new attractions/scarezones without removing others. Each year it either stays the same or gets even less as they remove more attractions. Still annoyed I never got to go on Duel live as they've got a perfect ride for the event but they just do nothing with it. Apparently it's because people complained that the guns were turned off although I doubt a few complaints from some stupid people who didn't get the idea of Duel Live would cause them to get rid of it. Would also love to see the corn maze used again.

Going to have to make the most of the visit when I go. As I'm stupidly poor it'll be my only visit to the towers this year so going to have to cram everything into one day.

I very much doubt CoH going in that tent. If you ask me, the hospitality tent is a much more idly possible location, especially as there's more of a larger space inside.

So, you're suggesting that a "free" attraction is more popular than a paid for attraction?

I think maybe you've hit on a secret winning formula here Ollie!

I'm just off to suggest to Game that they hand out games for free rather than selling them - I'll bet they'll suddenly and mysteriously be hugely popular; more so than any other game store in town. I think maybe you've hit on a secret winning formula here Ollie!

Is there actually no limit to your business acumen? ;) :P

Lofty - why have you not utilised Ollie's genius before when putting forward your plans for Scare Mazes?

OMG - I have actually just broken my own personal, heavy duty sarcasm detector

Alton's NEVER have queues, that's for the fact that they're timed entry Ollie, nothing to do with money reasons ;)

And hence why Scarefest is SO much better than Fright Nights! The queues Thorpe's mazes get are absurd and makes the experience unenjoyable, whereas the timed entry for Alton's means you can make the most of your day and do the mazes without any vile waiting times. Alton does it right, even TOTT doesn't get horrendous queues!

Did I mention how excited I am for this eeeeee :)
