Re: 22 Days of Coasters- Day 9- The Best Place Ever!
The forecast wasn't looking so great for our day at Silver Dollar City, so we were going to get there for opening but being lazy buggers got the best of us and we arrived a while after. The parking lot looked really busy, being almost completely full, but it's quite deceiving because the coasters don't really get long queues. We figured since it's a family park that has more to it than just cred upon cred, people were dispersed around the shops, shows, and other attractions rather than just at the coasters. Still, my main goal from the day was Outlaw Run, considering I had all the other creds. But, as you can see, even the line for the fun bus to the entrance was long!
I had to take an obligatory photo at the entrance.
The park itself is so much nicer than I remembered. I actually remember not really liking Silver Dollar City or Dollywood last time I visited them, but my opinion changed quite a bit especially as far as Silver Dollar City is concerned. The only thing I really still hate is the layout of the park. It's not actually a big park in terms of area, but the layout forces you to have to walk in the most roundabout ways to get from attraction to attraction, which can be a bit silly, annoying, and confusing all at once. I literally would not have been able to navigate the park had I not been with people who can read a park map.
Our first stop of the day, much to my dismay (one of the only times I was getting cred anxiety on the entire trip, because I had been waiting for Outlaw Run since it opened a few years back), was Wildfire. I think it's an overrated coaster to be honest, but the setting gives it those extra brownie points. It's not a bad ride, just a bit short and nothing spectacular, but the first drop and the view it great.
Myself and Ben rode in the back the first go, and then for some reason Tom wanted to reride right away so I rode the second from the back row. It was a walk on anyway, so it didn't eat up much time but it had already started to rain and the dark clouds were rolling in! It ended up being an entertaining ride, having been sat next to a hick family that was talking about how the first drop made their balls tickle.
We walked over to Powder Keg next...
Only to find that it was shut due to inclement weather. It wasn't really raining at this point, but the track was wet and apparently needed to dry off. So, much to Ben's dismay, we headed over to Fire in the Hole, which is DEFINITELY more of a cred than Gold Mine at Blackpool regardless of how much he wants to pout about it. I did not remember how wet you actually get on it! It was a lot more than the light misting I was anticipating. I still really like this coaster for some reason, even though most of it is just mincing along a track next to some random scenes of pioneers and Indians.
The next stop was Thunderation, which Darren had to be escorted to because the ground was wet and his shoes didn't have traction. Thank goodness Ben is such a gentleman, or Darren would've taken a fair few spills.
Thunderation was actually so great! I didn't really remember much about it, apart from that it went backwards last time I rode it. It's really substantial in height an length for a mine train style coaster, and apart from Outlaw Run, was actually probably the longest line of the day. I would definitely reride it again if I ever go back and I'd even go as far as saying it's one of my favourite mine train coasters apart from maybe the ones at the Disney parks (Everest being the only one I'd probably put above it).
Next was the coaster I had been waiting for since it debuted: Outlaw Run!
This was also important because it was Tom's thousandth coaster, not including powered coasters and whatever else he doesn't count.
It was only one train operation which meant about a fifteen to twenty minute wait. We all decided to wait for the front row, and I rode with Tom.
Darren and Ben were a bit mad at me because I gave away my opinion of it when I got back to the station, but whatever, they got over it.
Honestly, I have to say I wasn't blown away my first ride like I expected to be. I did have high hopes because I have heard nothing but great things about it, but I didn't let me expectations get out of control and I was still a bit let down. I don't know if the rain made it run a bit slower, or if it was just because it felt a bit on the short side, but I definitely prefer Wicked Cyclone. After we rode in the back later my opinion of it improved substantially, but it's still not in my top five. Top ten? Yes. But I think overall I prefer Wicked Cyclone and Iron Rattler.
It had pissed down rain a bit, so Grand Exposition Coaster was closed until the track dried, and Powder Keg was still out of commission. We decided to wait until GEC opened that way everyone else could get the cred.
It was about fifteen minutes and five laps of test runs later that they finally let people on. It didn't last long though, because it started pissing rain again a few minutes later. At least everyone got the cred, and that's all that mattered!
Darren braved the rain so he could smoke while we all took shelter.
Only Powder Keg was left on the agenda, so we kind of minced around the park knowing it would still be closed due to the weather. There was a fab bridge thing...
There was a jerky shop near Powder Keg, so I decided I would sample some alligator jerky and deer jerky. It was awesome!
I also met a little friend while we waited!
It started to become annoying waiting for Powder Keg to open, so I think we ended up just going back to Outlaw Run for a few rerides. I decided to stay and reride it myself when they went back to Powder Keg after one or two rides. The timing was great because when I met them back at Powder Keg, it was just opening so we were the first train of the day. Realistically though, we probably waited over an hour for it if you consider how long we waited in the rain for it to open!
It wasn't as good as I remembered it being, especially the pointless second half, which might as well just be a drop into the brake run. It's still a fun enough family coaster though.
We were feeling a bit meh at this point, probably because of the weather, so we decided to just head out. It was after four at this point and even though we had to skip some of the fab water rides, mother nature was being spiteful so we headed to the fun bus and the bakery where they were selling some blown out buttholes for dessert.
Ben was thirsty so he bought a pop, which he spilled about ten seconds later in line for the parking lot tram. It was actually the highlight of my day, because random people laughed at him.
We were hoping to see some tornados on the drive into Little Rock, but all we got was more rain and scary driving conditions. I didn't dig it. I'll end this part of the report off with a picture of Ben being glam.
Next: Magic Springs and Ripoff Falls.
