200ft Ferris Wheel for Brighton

This may have been posted before, but it's been delayed for so long and is ACTUALLY happening.

Not quite the 600ft observation tower we've been promised about a million times, but it's better than nothing I suppose.

It's going to be further down on the gay side of the pier (FishLife side), not near the destroyed west pier like originally planned. This side is less posh, plus is a bit lower down from the main road so is slightly less offensive. Also, on the off-chance that the Observation tower actually happens one day, they want them to be further apart.

I'm sure this was meant to be a slick new wheel, but again, why spend loads of money, loads when they don't need to. Plus, it's easier to get planning permission if it's temporary. They want it for 5 years.

From a quick google it seems to be this wheel, previously in Cape Town, South Africa

The one that have written that article have screwed up his/hers conversions.

197 ft is not the same as 45 meters :)

Looks like it's going to be one of these: Click wheels, the same as the one that opened in the Gothenburg harbour a couple of years ago...

^ Yeah, I think I've seen these in a few cities. Still, it'll be fab to see Brighton from another angle <3.

Yeah, Liverpool has one. They're actually really good, a lot higher up at the top then they actually look...

Meh.

These are basically everywhere now: Liverpool, Manchester, even Derby for ****'s sake. I just see them as a lazy way of grabbing a bit of money; they're overpriced to go on them and require far less planning to throw them up (in a few days) for a few years.

The London Eye was originally on a 5 year planning permission, it's now been extended to 30!

It depends on if this does well I guess!

Oooh, a pic of where it's actually going <3.

I'm totes the only one who cares about this, but, <3 <3.

I just don't really get it though. I love Brighton, but what is there to actually look at? The pier and that tacky (yet fab!) pavilion are about it.

Saying that, the one in Manchester just gives you a lovely view of the roof of the Arndale Centre and that's still popular, so **** knows.

At least with the one in Liverpool you've actually got the docks and other stuff to look at from it.

^ I suppose the sea/pier/pavillion is still more than places like Manchester, Derby and Nottingham (which had one at some point). You should be able to see the downs (hehe) in the distance too.

I think it's more for the rich Asian tourists who are gagging to spend daddies cash. There are loads of 'em, loads in Brighton for some reason. They <3 it.

It is stupid, but far less stupid than the ones at Weston Super Mare or Great Yarmouth.

I blates won't go on it though. They're always SO over priced

^ Why's this less stupid than the one at Yarmouth? (in saying that, it actually looks like the one they had there).

Because its Great Yarmouth. There's less people there on a smaller budget than there is in Brighton. Therefore, from a business point of view (on top of everything else) it's less stupid to have one in Brighton.

The point of these wheels is the view, not the experience of being on a wheel (well, with these smaller ones anyway, maybe not with the Eye). Therefore, having recently been on the London Eye isn't necessarily going to stop someone going on the Brighton one. Plus, there are loads of people who come to Brighton as a trip in its own right. They won't have been on the Eye in the same trip (if ever) so I don't see how it makes a difference.

Yeah I could have got a better picture, but completely forgot (too busy trying to make friends to get the credz!)

While Meridian Tonight did report this wheel as previously operating in Cape Town, the actual Cape Town 'Wheel of Excellence' is still there and operating today.

It looks amazing! Too bad it's so far away and I'll never get to go :(
