Rides at Buffalo Bill's Casino closed until further notice

It’s good to hear that the rides are open again, isn’t it? Hopefully this could be the start of a real recovery for Buffalo Bill’s!

Let's just say I get extremely trigger happy with the banhammer when a new user signs up to post in this topic. Particularly when he answers to the "Fave Coaster" and "Fave Park" questions on the profile page by repeating the questions. The news about the rides being open also aren't substantiated by any other source. I'm gonna guess its source is "the thread title says something about some rides that are closed, let me make up something that sounds on-topic so my post appears legitimate".

If Kurjeg is a real, legitimate user he's welcome to sign back up to the site with another account. But this is not the thread to make one's first post in for anybody who wants to appear to have a genuine interest in coasters.

I’ll admit that I, as usual, fell for that one… the new member seemed like a genuinely nice guy, and he was reporting relevant, on-topic news. I even welcomed him to the forum!

Is there a possibility, however remote, that he wasn’t a bot?

The thing that confuses me is; how can someone posting relevant news about the rides being back open lead the conversation onto whatever site they’re presumably trying to advertise? Unless the park themselves are planting bots in this thread to advertise the park, which the chances of are slim to none, I’m not really sure how they can lead on-topic news onto a link to a site. Certainly didn’t seem like the type of conversation that would lead to a casino site like the past few… although I guess I’m not the best with social cues.

Out of interest, does anyone know whether the rides at Buffalo Bill’s are actually back open like the new member said they were?

Yes, there is. But when it becomes that remote, the safer (and easier) play is to assume your 99% gut instinct is right.

Generally, they will try to go back and edit in links back into their posts after they've posted the prerequisite number of posts to be able to, but other times they're trying to post a link first time and it doesn't work and they never realise.

It's always a reactive thing for us, but any topic where a random new member with a sketchy IP address posts something automatically raises at least one flag. That topic has the word "casino" in the title and you can add about another dozen flags to the roster.

In terms of the actual status of the cred, I wouldn't really bank on getting regular updates. It was hardly the most visited place when the cred was operating, let alone now.

I'd say it's pretty high, actually. It's hard to make a script to write posts that sound genuinely on-topic (without being extremely generic, such as always answering "this is an interesting thread" or something like that), never mind the bit about coming back a few days later to edit the post. So it's usually done manually, by a genuine human who signs up and posts in hundreds of forums a day.

What @Hixee said: they will edit the post later. They would not try to "steer the conversation", but make it look like they've been talking about their online casino all along. For instance saying something like:
"I have been there recently and they opened again. However, lately I've found it better to play with crummy online scam site than travelling to a real casino"

Or maybe just inserting the keyword/link randomly into the post without concern for grammar or coherence:
"I have been there recently and they crummy online scam site opened again."

Reminds me a lot of all those Fl*xzon* comments on YT, where someone always replies to the original comment 5 minutes later recommending it. Doesn't half get on my wit.

Thread in a nutshell: casi-no.

Not sure how these people think they won’t be spotted when using new accounts. Professional manipulators tend to play the long game. Incidentally, if anyone wants a genuine half-price x-box box, or would like to know how to get a bigger ‘pen fifteen’ in just 4 weeks, send me a PM.

This thread is slowly becoming one my favourites, for the information value it's provided, and the sheer dogmatic approach of dodgy, scammer-like folk continually trying their luck.

Anyone want to place a bet when the next one will come along? ;)

Gotta admire your detective instincts. No scammer is safe on CF with you around. As soon as they come you chase them down

Just out of curiosity. How did you know I wasn't a scammer? Or what if I am?

Would taking the word Casino out of the topic title help? It may take a little while but eventually it would drop out of any Google search results wouldn't it?

That's like taking the cheese out of the mousetrap, though. If we wanted to get rid of the problem we would have locked the thread, but it's more fun this way.

I usually leave in peace any account that has managed to give a sensible answer to the "Fave Park/Fave Coaster" questions when signing up, and they usually get a pass if they make their first few posts in on-topic threads too (a couple of weeks ago, we had a user who seemingly signed up to bump an eight-month old thread in General Polls - let's just say we suspected him of not being here to talk about coasters). If the first thing you fill out in your profile is the "website" field but don't make any posts, that's a flashing red flag as well.

That being said, I'd be curious to see what would happen if a spammer managed to attain a genuine interest for coasters while building their post count towards the limit where they can post links.

*slap slap* “You’re in too deep man. You haven’t seen your children in weeks!! Think of your family!!!” *slap slap*
“But... but... if I just do ONE more weekend trip I can get make the big five - oh - oh”
*slap slap*

I would watch this film. I’m sure Day-Lewis would be tempted.

Whoa, this bot has played the long game.

Let me be honest.
I have no idea what you're talking about.
Now can we discuss.
King of Las Vegas creds,
Simply known as Desperado.

Please let it open again.
Like, I need the cred.
Sorry for the spammy post.
