What makes the scariest ride ever?

Sorry for the awfull wording of the question, but I was wandering that, due to all of the saw adverts saying its the scariest ride ever, what makes a ride the scariest ride ever?

Well it has to be if it's the only horror themed coaster in the world. :P

It's not the scariest ride though. The ghost Train at Brean wins that easily.

For me a scary ride is one filled with suspense. For example, even though i've been on Oblivion a countless number of times, I always feel the same fear as you slowly climb the lift hill and slowly crawl round the corner and then as you look over that edge just waiting for your inevitable doom.

I think there are a number of factors which could make a ride scary, such as location and also height.

Take the Super Booster on Brighton Pier for example - I think it's spot right at the end of the Pier is one reason why it's scary and the build up to the drop made me nervous too.

Also Stealth is another ride which has a similar effect on people just from looking at it, especially as it dominates the Thorpe skyline :D

Well... I guess these factors would make me mess my pants when combined.

- A disclaimer sign on the ride (can only be seen when you're on the ride), stating that the park is not responsible for any damages caused to riders.
- A half empty beer bottle placed on the ride control panel.
- Lots of gaffa tape on the restraints
- Portraits of people in the station, with lit candles and black ribbons on them
- Lack of chain dog clunking
- The ride keeps rattling after you leave the lift
- Welding joints on the track
- Not just different cars, but different models of cars, clearly home-adjusted to fit the track
- Enclosed ride, or at least most of it not visible unless you are riding.
- "No photography" rule in the park.

I always found most ghost trains are fairly predictable - one shock after another, spaced around every five to ten seconds and designed to make you jump every time.

Shocks have their place and if used in moderation can be fantastic, but I always find the best horror experiences create a creepy atmosphere, build up the tension and then make you jump a mile every once in a while.

I've also found that the rides that often make me the most uneasy are those that manage to invade your personal space. A great example of this is, Curse of Darkastle at Busch Gardens. The 3D effects make it look as if objects are flying out of the screen towards you, and even though they're not real you can't help but flinch as they 'hit' you.

XScream on top of the Stratosphere in Las Vegas.. you don't need theme for that amount of fear.

The Haunted Mansion at Knoebels got the whole "don't scare people every five seconds so that the anticipation builds, then make them jump a mile" trick right. It's one of the few dark rides I've ridden that did.

I think the biggest fear of rides happens before you even approach it. Simple things like the ride's appearance and sound can create great amounts of fear. Oblivion & Apocalypse can be the UK's prime example.

I would say 300ft nothing by a small jump suit on and to make it work you have to pull your own release cord.

World' Tallest at 300 feet.

The fact that's official makes it the scariest advert ever!

As for rides - simply playing on common fears. As MouseAT says, if you build tension, it's the expectation of fear that scares people. So a haunted ride need you to constantly feel there's a scare about to happen, but then don't let it, just keep building and bring on the scare when it is not quite so expected.

I always loved the way Oblivion played on fear (it helps I have a fear of heights though). The whole presentation of the ride is designed to make you terrified if you have a fear of heights (very common). The way the train slams into the whole after hanging is a bit of a nightmare for people watching. Then the slow, steep lift hill after the screaming queue-line videos, the pause at the drop over the hole. It was perfectly designed to manipulate people's fears.

Obviously it doesn't scare people no afraid of heights, but you can never get around this. Haunted houses don't scare me because I don't believe in them. Snakes, spiders, skeletons, etc don't phase me - you can't scare everyone all the time. You CAN aim at people who do have particular fears though.

The only rides to scare me have no theming funny enough.

PMBO
Stealth
Oblivian
Sheikra

Others will be TTD and KK and thats all due to the height.

Saw did not scare me at all, and when I speak to people that have been on Saw what scared them was the lift hill, these are gp people btw.

The best horror ride I have been on is the ghost train at Brean.

The wild mouse at BPB; the feeling that you are always about to come off, will always scare the bejesus out of me, tbh. Other than that, Apocalypse is a belter too.

Yeah I forgot about drop towers, they really scare me again its the height. I have got better on them now but I just dont enjoy them.

Yep! I mean, holy crap, after all the build up and then there scare right at the end! Bloody hell. That ride was insane. I miss it so much.

Initially, size does definitely have an affect on you - (just remember the first time, wakling down blackpool promenade to the sight of the big one).

Once on the ride - the best ones build up some sort of anticipation - coaster wise, oblivion does it nicely, as do eurofighters to an extent, and I'd like to mention the slow spiral hills on say the black hole.

anopther factor on some rides is a feeling iof insecirity - stand up floorless on apocolypse, the wild eagle at fort fun, and pendol at tibidabo both scaerd the hell out of me!

That said - very few ghosty rides sare me...

Any really high lift hill and first drop is able to scare me, to be honest. Millennium Force, Behemoth, and Nitro are the three that spring to mind.

Fast launches also get me as well. The tension waiting on the launch track is insane when it comes to coasters like Dragster and Ka.
