VR-Coaster virus hits Six Flags

Strata Poster
The VR-coaster fad has spawned its way to the US ; with Samsung installing VR-stuff on 9 Six Flags rides for this season.
Not sure how I feel about this, some of the rides are pretty "big"...

This Changes Everything!

Six Flags is bringing ground-breaking experiences to nine parks — North America's first Virtual Reality (VR) Roller Coasters, using Samsung Gear VR powered by Oculus. Enjoy thrills like never before as some of our most popular coasters will be equipped to allow you to wear Samsung Gear VR headsets and feel the heart-pumping adrenaline of steep drops, inverted loops and powerful twists and turns as gyros, accelerometers and proximity sensors synchronize all of the action in an incredibly realistic 360-degree virtual reality world.

Whether you're soaring through Metropolis on our SUPERMAN Virtual Reality Coasters or co-piloting a fighter jet on The New Revolution, this remarkable technology is a definite game-changer. The headsets allow guests 13 and older to enter a virtual world with high-resolution imagery and 360-degree views that synchronize to the action of the coaster in a totally new, one-of-a-kind experience.
Rides are;

with an alien-battle-type VR-thing;
  • Shock Wave at Six Flags Over Texas
    Dare Devil Dive at Six Flags Over Georgia
    The New Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain
    Ninja at Six Flags St. Louis
    Steamin’ Demon at The Great Escape
    Goliath at La Ronde

and with a Superman thing;
  • SUPERMAN Krypton Coaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas
    SUPERMAN The Ride at Six Flags New England
    SUPERMAN Ride of Steel at Six Flags America

Re: VR-Coaster virus hits SixFlags

Does anybody know how much one of these VR conversions costs? Obviously it's a fraction of the cost of a new coaster but it can't be cheap.

Re: VR-Coaster virus hits SixFlags

^ No idea, but Samsung will be paying for a lot of it I would think.

(or at least its all part of their marketing budget rather than just selling kit to SF)

Re: VR-Coaster virus hits SixFlags

Because the first thing I wanna do on a 30 year old Arrow Corkscrew with OTSR's is put on a VR headset so I can smash my head around without warning <3

Re: VR-Coaster virus hits SixFlags

I'm surprised that they didn't choose to put VR on the B&M Flyers. You can't see crap on those.

^And that is really true. Ninja is absolutely brutal. Don't see how it can benefit.

Re: VR-Coaster virus hits SixFlags

I couldn't see in the PR, but they are optional right?

I agree with putting them on boring rides, like mine trains, rubbish flyers and wild mice, but anything forceful with OTSRs or actually good, like Superman TR, is stupid. Bad move imo.

And that's not even the only rough one ;). Seems like a bit of a stupid idea on some of the rides imho. To make a good VR coaster, a ride needs to be smooth really - and less nauseating than most. A lot of those rides don't tick either of those boxes.
And Ninja? What? What were they thinking? That's just begging for a lawsuit at some point...

Also, if the ride's the flagship attraction at the park...you'd really want to minimise queue times wouldn't you? I mean, I'd be seriously hacked off if I'd travelled all the way to SFA, only to have to wait longest for the one thing I wanted to ride....

Weird.

According to a quick Google search the Samsung VR headsets cost $400 each. You'll probably need spares in case some break so maybe around 50-70 headsets so you're already at over $20k just for the headsets! Imagine all the IT networking, support and adaption to the trains and stations aren't cheap either!

Re: VR-Coaster virus hits SixFlags

As someone who has little or no interest in this sort of technology appearing on coasters (with maybe the exception of coasters like X:NWO at Thorpe Park), I'm worried that this is just going to ruin the experience on those coasters for those of us who don't want it.

I just can't see how this isn't going to be an operational nightmare...

I don't like the idea of it being included on coasters as good as Superman:RoS and even Krypton Coaster, that just seems like a waste.

But, need to try it really.

I have to hand it to SF though, they're at least keen on making sure everywhere gets SOMETHING every year and marketing the tits off whatever piece of **** they do install. It's better than CF building a B&M every year across the chain and telling the rest of the parks to go **** themselves.

Re: VR-Coaster virus hits SixFlags

I wonder if each will be customised to match the layout of the coaster or if it'll be generic flying around doing ****.

Re: VR-Coaster virus hits SixFlags

^I'm sure the storyline will be the same throughout all the coasters, but the paths should be custom-fit.

This doesn't seem very well thought-out, as others have already said. Having it on rough or forceful coasters seems to be a pretty bad idea and variations of the same VR movie on different types of coaster makes it seem a bit cheap. For example, they seem to be having the same theme on Goliath as on a Vekoma corkscrew and a Euro-Fighter. Bit of a shame I'd imagine, but maybe it will work. I'm not convinced though.

VR on an Intamin Hyper that's considered one of the best coasters in the world?! :?

AND a B&M Hyper...?!

This just has to stop, ASAP.

No.

The ride selection is awful. I really hope the animation in the video is just the mock up and not the actual thing the headsets will have. Good idea, badly executed.

Ugh, this VR ng is just a cheap gimmick. The only coasters it would ever work on are dark coasters. Why didn't SF put this on rides like Skull Mountain and he other dark coasters in the chain?

And I seriously don't get the point of putting them on hyper coasters. The whole point of them is the height, so why put something on them that will take away that effect for riders?
