My wife and I decided to do a bit of a road trip for our honeymoon. A few nights in New York followed by a couple of days at Cedar Point. We would then drive down to Miami for 2 nights then a final 4 nights in Orlando.
Here's our trip map.
Luckily for me I realized we had an evening free and Hershey Park was added to the itinerary. I was looking at doubling my credit count so knew this was going to be amazing.
Parks visited;
Hershey Park
Cedar Point
Busch Gardens Tampa
Universal Studios/IOA
Fun Spot America
Seaworld
Park 1, Hershey Park
The day started with a drive from New York to Hershey. We picked up this massive beast and got on our way.
It's a lot easier to drive in the states than I thought, after a while anyway, getting out of NYC is not a nice experience.
We arrived at the park a bit behind schedule so at 4:30 we went into the chocolate world as I promised Helen.
We did the tour and had a look in the shop for a bit but i was started to get impatient. Very large, very sexy coasters were calling me, so we left choc world and headed toward the park entrance.
I love the Entrance area to the park, it's like walking through a Park with quaint signs and buildings up to the gates, where you're greeted by possibly the largest flag I've ever seen.
We quickly went to hospitality to nab our snack vouchers and moved swiftly on to our first cred.
I had already seen Skyrush's lift and initial drop from the road and had already got the goosebumps then... but now I was feeling total excitement. As i got in the back right seat i was grinning from ear to ear, Helen gave me a funny look to say "stop acting like a child" but of course, I didn't care, I was in full on goon mode. However, i hadn't given her any idea of what was to come, this was partly to get her on the thing as it's quite daunting. After we got off she told me I was an ass but she enjoyed herself.
The ride op here was fantastic, the bloke asked if i'd been on before and we had a quick chat. He was waiting for me when we got back to the station with a expectant expression of joy, gave me some advice for the rest of the day.
There may have been a danger that I over-hyped this ride and could have set myself up for huge disappointment but no. Absolutely amazing! Loved the speed of the lift hill, loved the airtime of the first drop, loved everything about it.
Both big airtime hills were fantastic, and the way it tried to throw me out on the high speed changes was great. I was speechless when we hit the brake run, just a massive grin. Easily my new number one coaster, I will be back to Hershey just for this.
Bought the tee immediately after.
I was hungry for more action so seeing a 10 min queue for comet decided to get it done. Was a bit rattly but I enjoyed it, we just laughed all the way round. Such a simple woodie but great fun.
After our bumpy ride we went and got ourselves an ice cream with our snack vouchers, mmm, mixed ice cream awesomeness. It was huge, considering it was free and it was a "small" ice cream.
We then took a trip on the slow and relaxing Skyride, this was more to keep Helen happy due to comet's roughness taking its toll.
I quickly walked on Superdooperlooper, madame sat this one out. One loop, mine train type ride, near the bottom of my list, meh. However, I had the pleasure of sitting behind a couple of teenagers, one of which was giving it large; "yeah man, here we go! No backin out now boyzzz, lets do this yeah!!" Quickly followed by the most almighty girl scream as we went towards the loop. Spent most of the ride laughing at the prat.
Started heading towards Stormrunner as we decided to do great bear at the end of the night and came across Trailblazer. 10 min Q and we were on. Quite liked the helix at the end but wouldn't ride it again, it was a bit bland, even for a Mine Train.
At this point I was getting a bit worried. 4 creds down and only 1 was really any good.
This all changed upon Stormrunner. Luckily only a 20/25 min wait and snagged a back row seat with another single rider. Really really liked this, great launch, decent if a little on the short side top hat, followed by the wonderful Cobra Loop. Nice entry speed keeping the adrenaline up followed by the perfect amount of hang-time before righting us and snaking towards the ground.
Then one of the best elements I experienced on my trip, Snake Dive. Just Wow! The heart line roll is just perfect and the twist and dive is so smooth and exhilarating. I think I enjoyed the final twists and airtime more because of the Snake Dive, which gives bonus points for me. Top 5 coaster as combines a great launch with a good top hat and some amazing inversions. Even the otsr's didn't bother me.
I'm back right in the pic, arms up ready to launch.
It was now time for my 50th cred, so I went towards Sidewinder, only my 2nd Boomerang.
Wow! What a load of crap. The initial drop was ok but the loop was rubbish, the cobra roll was painful and the ride was rattly all the way through. Backwards was even worse. I was quite glad to get off, but disappointed that the milestone coaster was so VILE!
We were starting to get hungry, but we saw that Fahrenheit's queue was only 20 mins, so I persuaded Helen to go on it.
This was the 2nd time today that I was blown away by the ride ops. This time it was the dispatcher, gave out some good facts and adapted his intro to all new riders well, probably the best announcer of the trip.
Fahrenheit is great to watch, which usually means (imo) its rubbish to ride, and even though I knew this was one of the most popular rides in the park I was expecting it to be a bit rubbish, I was wrong though. The lift hill seems to go on forever, and the drop was good, decent amount of airtime. It was also surprisingly smooth, however, the cobra roll was jerky on the exit, this was probably due to back seat though. Shame we didn't have time to try another seat.
The Norwegian loop was pretty good though, but the best part of the ride for me were the corkscrews. They were sublime. I really felt the forces whip me through them and they weren't jerky at all. Would re-ride just for these (and hope the cobra roll jerk was just back left).
Time for dinner, so went back to Trailblazer as there was a smokehouse we passed. Got a pit beef sandwich with mac n cheese with our meal deal. The pit beef was tasty, BBQ sauce was tangy and when mixed with the mac n cheese was good enough. No complaints about the food for me. Think the meal deal was about $13 and included a souvenir bottle, considering these were $9 separately I think that's a good deal.
It was now starting to get dark, so I was running out of time and decided to smash through the last creds as quick as possible, forgot to get pics due to running from cred to cred. At this point Helen had had enough of coasters and sat them out, mainly as she's not a wood fan. However she was going to go on Great Bear at the end of the day.
So up next was Wildcat. I was aware this was GCI's first installation and was excited but apprehensive as I've heard bad reviews. It was also my first night ride on he trip. I loved the way it looked in the dark, and it was walk-on.
Went back left as usual and it was a good ride. Bit rough but it wasn't too bad, the twistyness was fun and intense and it felt like it went on for ages, which wasn't a bad thing. Would probably have re ridden if we had more time.
I then raced (muahaha) to Lightning Racer. This was a short wait again, only 5 mins, and I was looking forward to this.
I was right to, got on the Thunder train, in the middle to save time. I was with a elder lady who wasn't a coaster fan, but we both had great fun shouting at the train to hurry up to beat the lightning train. It had some great interaction with the other train, especially the turns towards each other, and some decent airtime (even in the middle). I think this could have been even better had I got a better seat and during the day to see more of the ride. Again, time constraints stopped a re-ride.
So we were into the last 45 mins of the day, 2 creds left to bag, Wild Mouse and Great Bear. Easily doable, until I saw the Mouse queue.
30 Mins!! OUTRAGE!!
Decided to sack it, I know it's a cred, but 20/30 mins for a mouse or the possibility of a night ride on my number 1 coaster. Hard decision right?!
Anyway, sped off to Great Bear, an extra 5 min wait for the back seat knowing this would be a 1 time ride.
I expected more if I'm honest. After seeing this during the day it looked really good, but I'm afraid the curse of the watchable coaster strikes again.
It's not bad, it's just.... Good. I think I subconsciously compare all inverts to Nemesis, which I know I shouldn't. But even judging it alone it meanders through certain points and it dies a death at the end.
I enjoyed the drop into the loop, which was decent and the Immelmann was good, probably my fave element of the coaster, but the zero-g wasn't great, same with the corkscrew. They were both a bit headbangy.
So much so that it put Helen off all inverts for the rest of the trip.
I didn't think it was that bad but it didn't take the invert crown off Nemesis for me.
Got the pic earlier in the day, the best part imo.
It was 9:45 - enough time for a Skyrush re-ride. Decided to wait for front row. Then the inevitable happened.
BREAKDOWN HORROR!
Poor people on the train got stuck 3/4 of the way up the lift hill. I waited 10 mins but they hadn't moved so had to give it up as a lost cause.
Real shame, probably the most disappointing part of the whole trip, in fact, I was still disappointed about it when we got to Cedar Point.
They were still there as we exited the park but it did get going again just before we got into chocolate world to pick up some gifts.
Coaster count;
Wild Mouse - 0
Everything else - 1
All in all I loved Hershey Park, even though it was a flying visit it made my top park so far. A great mix of coasters with 4 excellent ones and only 1 really bad one. Good operations and ride ops, as well as a generally nice vibe in the place. Food is decent, good prices for meal deals and managed to get everything (bar the mouse) done in good time.
If you haven't been, I highly suggest a trip to Pennsylvania.
Next up, Park 2, Cedar Point
