Tir Holmes

Strata Poster
This is the first realistic park I have made on RCT3. Tir Holmes is meant to be a small park in mid-wales probably near Aberwystwyth. It is in it's 16th year of operation.

Tornado, my bad recreation of a Vekoma SLC with Top star in the middle of it.

Shot0014.jpg

Top Star, a very well named top star ride.

Shot0015.jpg

My longest coaster and in my opinion best coaster, Moto GP, A Vekoma Booster Bike Ride which has an inversion in. :? Well, I suppose when theres a crash at Moto GP the bike does end up flipping.

My final screenshot, a directly above view of the park.

Post any Comments please and because I can't be bothered posting a new topic, How do you film a POV?

If I remember correctly, Ctrl+F11 films the in-game camera. Be warned, it can take a while and the files can get large quickly. :)

It's a good enough start, but you need to define your park area more. It looks like a travelling fair has just arrived in the middle of a slightly wooded field and set up.

Some more buildings and an "edge" to the park would do it wonders. Also, I love the very common feel of the park, with the SLC, travelling flume(ish) layout and Big Apple. It just seems that there's an Oblivion costing hole for a cheap as peanuts Flume which goes against the rest of the kind of "cheapness" of the park that you've captured pretty well :)

So yeah, good effort and could be great with a bit more work. BTW, love seeing a crazy golf - nobody ever puts them in :)

^ When Building the log flume, I did try to go for the Travelling log flume design but it didn't fully work so ended up going underground back to the station. Also, I don't know if you noticed or not but the second drop is a backwards drop.

Actually, looking again now I'm fully awake... there are a few things

First of all with the Flume, it would have been better to lower the ground maybe? It's a flume too, so you're not tied to gravity to get it back, so you have a lot more freedom on design, using S-bends, etc.

Secondly, I spot a toilet bowl helix, simply... EUGH! They're not fun in real life and look pants :)

Finally (for this round ;) ), the Grand Prix on stilts is pretty dreadful. Again, it would cost a fortune to have such a huge layout raised up. It doesn't need to be as it doesn't cross over itself much. It's just raised "to fit" I imagine? It would have been better to put a similar layout on the flat ground close by. The layout is good, but would have been much better on the ground. Similarly the Crazy Golf. Now, I like the idea of having the Crazy Golf cross over itself, but not raised for no real reason other than "it wouldn't fit otherwise".

It's a good kind of starter park (and I've certainly been there and done that  ), so don't take the criticism too much to heart - I love the idea and you're half captured something great :)

^ Well, the go-karts do go over the path quite a bit and the mini golf I built to put in that space that I couldn't do anything with otherwise.

I see what's happened, you've built against the park boundaries haven't you? So everything ends up "squished" against the fencing.

Personally, I'd add theming or landscaping or something along that edge instead of rides, and expand out towards the centre of the map instead.

Generally, anything "raised" rings alarm bells. It's very rare in a park to come across rides or paths raised off the ground. It's expensive to do. It's well worth learning to use the ground tools properly to raise the ground level. It's a longer process, but the end result is much better. Reserve raised paths for stations to cross the track if absolutely needed.

It's best to always think of real park situations. How many raised paths are there at Tir Prince or Alton Towers? How many parks have Go-Karts on stilts? Sometimes it's best to scrap an idea because it doesn't look right, than to try a quick fix and take it away from "realism".

Ok, when I get on RCT3 friday night I'll fix that.

And also, about the raised path to stations. Rita? And Kumali, Mumbo Jumbo and Velocity, FL corkscrew slightly, etc......

Oh yeah, the station should always be off the ground, so you need a raised stairway/ramp to get to the station. If you look though, it's rare they're anything other than two rows the length of the station. I can't think of many that add more than the width of the track and platform with an upramp to the station.

The Big One is the only real, major difference I can think of just now - but that's simply because Blackpool are so cramped and tight on space. They also had a multi-million pound budget to build the ride and the queue was probably a drop in the ocean at a couple of hundred thousand. Even a park the size of Flamingoland or Drayton wouldn't put in such an unnecessary amount of walkway unless they were really, completely and utterly stuck for how else to fit the queue in.

It isn't working unless it's just taking a while to appear in the RCT3 video folder

^Is that definitely the right combination? I was just trying to remember off the top of my head.

[EDIT: After a two second Google search, it turns out it's Ctrl+Shift+F11]

^ That one works. Really is taking ages though. Since I started filming the SLC, I talked to my dad a bit and went and refilled my glass of Coke and it hasn't even got halfway up the lifthill.

Looking much better :) Love the swirling Go-Kart layout, looks excellent.

Other than that, the station building for the SLC looks a bit tall and narrow, but it may just be the shot you've taken.

Quick hint here. When you are doing video, reduce the screen resolution to 640x480 just for that video taking session. You'll never upload or have the video in the higher resolution, but dealing with the lower res means the recording is much faster as the PC has to deal with less pixels on the screen.

When you're done, reset the resolution :)

^OK, will do that next time.

New Update which I did yesterday but I've been waiting for a reply to that until I posted it.

The Summit

I decided here to copy the Great Orme a bit and put a building on top the highest hill in the park with a chairlift going up to it. Inside all there is a few cafes and some toilets.

Another Update

Last weekend I added 2 new rides to Tir Holmes. They are Fall of Terror, A Dinghy Slide and The Thriller, An indoor inverting wild mouse. I've had the idea of a ride called The Thriller for a while after drawing inspiration from the Michael Jackson song of the same name.

A POV of The Thriller.

"No mortal can resist the thrill of The Thriler": The Michael Jackson line that I got the idea for the Thriller from. Now also the rides slogan.

Why didn't I think of that before?! Cheers Furie, that'l definitely help me out.

It's looking good Thekingin64. I like the chairlift going up the hill to the cafe. It looks great.

Buildings... Eugh, eugh, eugh! Sorry

The cable car building on the top is "okay". Large expanses of the same wall texture though look pretty bad. Usually, in most buildings, there will be regular windows, or a window "cluster". Essentially, think real-life and work with your buildings based on what you see. Look closely at buildings that seem bland, and you'll see little features in even the most boring buildings (except maybe service sheds, but anything the GP will see).

So having said that, have you ever seen a building that looks like the Thriller "house"? Buildings, especially those around coasters are massively difficult to make. You need to take one of two approaches:

1. Make it real and build big and bold, but realistic around it. Make a castle, or a giant mansion or something to contain it. Place add on buildings around the edges that contain nothing, just to make things look more interesting.

2. Tin shed with facade. Duel at Alton is one of these. The tin shed is hidden from the public, so it doesn't matter it's a big rectangular box. The front section though contains all the theming. Here, imagine you're a guest in your RCT world and will you see the tin shed. If yes, hide it behind theming, or a big hill or something. If not, leave it, but make it complete utilitarian.

It all depends on if your peeps will see the "back" or not. If they're going all the way around, practice your building skills.

It's vanished off these forums now, but here's the construction of the park that was the pinnacle of my RCT3ing really. It was still really just a practice for me in "how to build" though:
http://www.coasterforce.com/phpBB3/view ... 20&start=0

My focus was in creating the buildings and landscaping. Most of the rides are inside. It's well worth just having a practice and play and working out how to build. It's difficult, but look and ask.

You'll notice I can't create coasters. I'm terrible at it, so constantly ask for help and advice on it. With practice, things get better, but it's worth looking, learning, asking and... Rebuilding time and time again

Keep at it, it's getting there slowly but surely :)

The Thriller seems painful as
1. Sharp turns at a high speed.
2. You bang your head on the roof as you go up the lift hill.

Furie, I'm rubbish at doing the buildings for indoor coasters and as that's quite a high coaster it's
especcialy hard to make it look good. Also, what you said for the POV's, I tried that for a POV of my new coaster that's coming in the new update but it didn't work due to my computer auto-adjusting the resolution back to the proper one for the game.

mouse: For the sharp turns, have you ever been on a wild mouse coaster? It's the same idea as them. with hitting the head, thats just caused by me being bad at themeing. New update coming soon.
