Sky News Kay Burley/Nick Varney Interview Complaint

Mr Stephen

Having seen the dreadful interview of Nick Varney conducted by Kay Burley on Sky News I decided to complain to Sky. Below is my complaint, their reply and my final comment.

1. The complaint

Dear Sir or Madam

I want to complain about the interview conducted by Kay Burley of Merlin CEO Nick Varney which was shown on Sky News.

The accident at Alton Towers was tragic, and people were seriously injured. The incident demands a full investigation, and questions to be asked of the operators of the parks.

However this was a dreadful interview during which Kay Burley was unprofessional and very rude. She was trying to put words into Nick Varney's mouth and was completely misrepresenting what he was saying. She kept interrupting him when he was trying to speak and the whole thing was just awful.

She would not accept that Merlin has operated the parks and rides safely for many years, and insisted that because there had been an accident that the rides were being operated unsafely. She also made the presumption that as another layer of safety protocol was being added that this meant the protocols were insufficient to date. Surely if there has been a freak accident any reasonable person would take whatever action they could to prevent a reoccurrence?

It was most inappropriate for her to demand to know if someone had lost a limb as a result of the accident. This is confidential medical information that can only be revealed with the consent of the injured party.

Nick Varney did extremely well to keep calm during the onslaught from Kay Burley. I think this interview shows his professionalism, and the lack of hers.

Sky News HD has been my news channel of choice for many years but I may have to reconsider in the light of this appalling interview.

2. The reply

Hi Stephen

Thank you for contacting Sky News with your feedback about the interview with Nick Varney, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments.

In general, Sky News believes that people in positions of responsibility and in public life should be held to account for their actions.

Our role is to question and challenge the points of view being put forward.

It is the job of a presenter to challenge, on behalf of the viewer, the stance that any interviewee takes on any issue of public concern.

The specifics of the interview which was broadcast on Friday 5 June are that Sky News invited Mr Varney to appear in a live interview to discuss the crash at Alton Towers and the reasons for the introduction of additional safety procedures at various theme parks. Mr Varney agreed to our request.

The crash at Alton Towers resulted in serious injuries to several people and wider public concern about the safety of rides at theme parks.

At the time of the interview, there were still people in hospital including some with life-changing injuries and Alton Towers remained closed while the investigation into the cause of the crash continued. In addition, other rollercoasters at other theme parks were also closed “for the foreseeable future” following the crash at Alton Towers.

In those circumstances – and given the continuing level of public concern – we felt it was right to repeatedly challenge Mr Varney about the safety procedures and the injuries which people had suffered. We challenged him over the issues and gave him an extended opportunity to respond to the concerns.

We appreciate you taking the time to contact us.

Kind regards

Robin

3. My final comment to them.

If you think her behaviour was acceptable then the situation at Sky News is worse than I thought.

There is a petition on www.change.org to have her sacked which now has over 24,000 signatures. I suggest you read some of the comments on there and you will see that you are out of step with public feeling on this.

(I think this is the best place to post my letter. If a mod disagrees feel free to move it.)

As poisonous as she is, she will never be sacked from SN.

Her style sums up the Murdoch media empire, and she helped to revive SN when it was near death, so she'll be there until she dies.

I never watched the interview. If rather get my news from official statements than speculative trash.

She's an aggressive news reporter. That's as far as it all goes really - coaster enthusiasts are going to try and get her sacked and moan about her because it's something close to their hearts. She's always been like this and in all honesty - that's why she's still got her job.

Some people need to see past coasters and realise there's more to life than their precious parks.

^To be fair, it's not just enthusiasts who dislike her, as I've heard several of my school friends criticising the interview.

Gee 24,000 signatures ain't bad at all (Im one of them :) ) but Ian is right, she won't be sacked.

Those wrinkles and bottox injections suggest this might happen sooner than we thought.

Never have I ever seen a more ignorant person. Watching the interview was probably the most cringe provoking video I've seen in a while. I sure hope that the little chances of her getting sacked come true.

Best thing to do with these things is just yet and ignore it. Yes, the interview was like an interrogation and was poorly conducted, but it gets views and gets people talking about Sky; exactly what the company want.

Ignoring it and getting facts from released statements of the best and most sensible thing to do in these situations.

Although she and sky news are obviously attention seekers and use interviews like this for their own publicity and pot stirring I'd be willing to bet that the effect of the complaints and petition are better felt with merlin than with Sky. Of course no-one wanted the accident to happen but people do sympathise with their regrets and still want them to be treated fairly. With all the turmoil they must be going through I expect that they are beating themselves up about it and appear to give the impression of being their own worst critic (although obviously the families involved etc will be too).

Maybe some of Kay Burney's general haters signed and complained as well but I am impressed with the numbers.

Ofcom have said they have received 1162 complaints about the interview which they are assessing before deciding whether to investigate. The petition has now gone over 28,000.

I agree that it is unlikely that any action will be taken against her, but she has clearly upset a lot of people.

I disagree here - this news being about a subject we understand highlights the issues in news reporting. I believe it is our duty to point that out to the world and tell Sky that we won't tolerate it. I bet she's had many complaints before by people who understand and care about other subjects she's misreported.

Most of the complaints are about her disgustingly inappropriate grilling on the confidential information regarding a victim. That's a whole different issue, and one many non-enthusiasts felt offended by.

Not sure I agree its what Sky want - they certainly don't want to be seen as uncaring for obvious victims, yet that's how it came across.

Voicing your opinion against this style of media helps change the way media is in this country.... Or rather, stop it from becoming like it is in the USA. If Sky News think this isn't what people like and is turning people away from their channel, they would soon change. A thousand complaints and 28 thousand signatures won't do that, but millions would, viewing numbers would. So if one doesn't like it, speak. Change public perception.

Ha, thanks Pierre. That was a very good read. I love how most of them are so level headed and non goons that speak sense.

They're right that ofcom can't do anything but surely it'd be enough complaints for Sky news to reconsider their opinion of how she conducts interviews.

I like how the Sky viewer relations guy avoids answering the part regarding the CONFIDENTIAL doctors reports.
It appeared to me as well that Nick was not given 'extended opportunities to respond', more that Nick was given the opportunity to say literally a few words before the she devil interrupted him with another question.

The only thing that might make Sky consider getting rid of her is if the interviewee's openly agree to be interviewed but refuse if she was to be the interviewer. Then there would be no point paying her wage if she is not doing anything.

Little hope of that happening though.
